Dear NCSoft

City of Heroes, an eight and a half year old title, is trending on Twitter.
Efforts to save it have met with almost unanimous support from the gaming community as a whole; nobody wants to see the game, the studio or the property, die.

You have something very special here. Something special created by a dedicated group of artists for a dedicated audience who will fight so it will continue to live and thrive...if you will only let it.

Why do you want to throw that away?

THey just dont care.

Boycott Ncsoft if they close down Coh.

Because they view this game as disposable I suppose.

But, if you truly want to ask them that question, take the time to use the contact information for NCSoft TonyV has collected on the Titan Network. The decision makers certainly aren't reading this forum now. If, indeed, they ever have.

Studio is permanently gone - they are getting new jobs, and that won't stop. I have a strong feeling that anything anyone does won't make any difference, including Titan's shenanigans. I want this game to continue but I'm realistic about all efforts done with other MMOs that have been killed and the results that usually follow (I said usually.)

I agree. I think this is a done deal. So be it. All you can do is never allow this company to do it to you again.

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

I have mentioned in another thread that I also don't have very high hopes for NCsoft to un-cancel the game. But I also said I'd cheer the Titan Network on its attempts all the way, and the last 12 hours or so are me keeping my promises.

It was an awesome event. It was insane. We crashed Virtue, then we filled it and had 300 people in queue. Whatever happens, if this community can stick together, we'll come back to Paragon City after November 30th. Take the shutdown of the official servers as time for a little break while the server emulators get ready.

Just look at this, people. Freaking look at it. If even 1/3 of the people in that picture come back when we have our own community servers running, COH will continue strong for a very long time.

Did you get a headcount of how many folks you were rendering? Rough estimate seems to be about 3-4k people all told in attendance?

Very impressive and good job on that vid.

I recorded 3164 unique characters during the event. Not all at the same time; this was over a period of several hours, and some left while others came in later. Still, I know I am missing people: I never managed to get in the same instance as DJ Jester or CuppaJo, for example. So the actual number of unique characters is at the very least 3200; 4000 doesn't sound too far fetched when you take into account all the people stuck in Queue and overflowing to Freedom.

I just recently read an article were Vivendi, who owns a big chuck of Blizzard, wants to sell it off due to a slump in the stock.
In my opinion, NCSOFT either does not have faith that the CoH franchise has a marketable sales appeal to other companies, or they are going to shelf it. A move should have already been made if they had intentions to sell it.
Why shelf it? So they can have the rights to make CoH2 or sell of the franchise when they can make more money for it.
Next month, X Com is coming out. I remember buying that game nearly 20 years ago. Now they are bringing it back with high hopes. Sometimes, separation makes the heart grow founder. In my opinion, this is what NCsoft is betting on. Let's hope it doesn't take 20 years.

It's a longshot but it isn't completely ruled out. It's mostly a question of will NCsoft actually take the trouble to deal ? Selling poorly performing assets seems to be an alien concept to them. It's almost as if admitting they had a division that didn't do well shames their corporate honor. Then whatever happens has to happen within the new profitability envelope for the company.

Excellent job on the video.

That makes sense.

If NCSoft thinks they may get a better price for the brand after the economy improves I can see why they'd hold onto it even if it's not profitable now.

Of course, given that they just closed the entire studio they've lost all the knowledge base they had on an engine that's been juryrigged to do things far in advance of what it was originally designed to do.

And they've created a fair amount of ill will by the way it was handled.

I was just talking to some friends in-game. I think that if NCSoft had said "We just can't continue to run the game any longer and it does not appear that we can find an offer that's going to justify the added expense of transferring ownership so we simply must shut down the game" then there would be a lot less ill will.

As it is, they shut down a game that still had a very vocal (if not large) fan base and also treated employees (that were well loved by the community to a degree that's probably unsual for a MMO) in a rather shabby manner.

The shutting down may have been inevitable, but they certainly handled it very poorly.

I don't see NCSoft reversing their decision. I think finding a buyer right now would be rather difficult.

But I think that if nothing else this has shown our Devs just how much we valued them as well as the game, and that's worht something to me.

Except that it *IS PROFITABLE* right now. It seems unlikely that the IP would be worth more money at some indeterminate point in the future.
