What sad news to hear on our wedding day. Thanks for everything, and we'll miss you!
Hey Arcanaville,
I swear I never did anything *that* bad on my play accounts. Most of my characters are on Justice, with my main characters : "Eep Eep" (notice the space) and "Captainblade". If there was another guy running around as "EepEep", that wasn't me. Btw, I'm glad that I was able to finally meet you that one time before. Too bad that the Going Rogue Launch Team Dev Wall that I asked you to sign will probably end up in a landfill. -Jesse |
Congrats on the marriage
As far as interviews go....I STINK at them!
I'm very analytical and either over-think the answers or just go and be brutally honest when I shouldn't be.
Example:
Interviewing for a random desktop support job with the local county government here (I didn't necessarily "want" the job...just needed money since I was off of work for months by then)....
It was a panel of 3 people interviewing me and one person asked, "why should we hire you? What makes you better than the others?"
I answered, "uh, I can't say that you should...I don't know the other candidates so it's impossible for me to say that I'm better than them." (something like that at least).
And to be honest that is how I feel about stupid questions like that. I don't know the other people so how I can rationally say, "I'm better than x person!"?
So yeah...didn't get the job

Your experiences due to the game are great, thanks for sharing them with all of us. I'm personally giggling that your wife thought you were a girl initially, so cute! Hope you're both enjoying/enjoyed your big day and honeymoon in spite of the bad news here. Congratulations to both of you!!!

I've been begging rednames who might still have access to the building to either take some high res photos of the Going Rogue wall for me (high enough for me to actually see where I signed it) or just saw it up and ship it to me. Its not like you guys need a wall there anymore.
It was nice finally connecting a face to the name as well. Its too bad there was all that Freedom stuff just sucking up all the time or I'd have more time to chat with you. Man that was a long day. If I didn't already mention it, shoot me an email if you get a chance.

Hey there Liquid,
When I started reading your post, I went "Fatare... why does that ring so many bells?" and when you said she was Marisa from California, then it clicked. Marisa went to UCR with the owner of my account, Kristen. I've mentioned many times what a pain in the neck it is for me to purchase things from NCsoft (it sees my IP is from Argentina and instantly rejects everything), so even my account is not at my name; it's thanks to Kristen that I have a COH account at all. I met Marisa and her then-boyfriend in-game back in May 2005, and a few times afterwards, but being in a different server we never stayed in touch. Nothing special, I just found it funny that I met her when I first got into the game, and I get news about her now that the game's ending. Bookends and all that. Best wishes to you two! |
My then-boyfriend and I tried out the beta on his computer. We'd played Dark Age of Camelot (him a lot, me only a little bit) and this game called A Tale in the Desert, and both were fun but not totally satisfying for me. Minutes after running around punching and zapping things with my very first character, my bubble/electric defender Fatare, I knew I wanted THIS GAME to be MY mmo. So I feel like I got my then-bf into it rather than the other way around (even though it was him showing me the beta, I staked a claim on playing it pretty quick!). If he then got Kristen into it and then enabled you to play indirectly, I will gladly take some credit, haha!
Especially since you've done really cool things for the community as a whole (I was super-excited about the thing you made that took advantage of the rag-doll limb position coding, for example!).
Anyway thanks for the good wishes!

Here's some serious advice. There's a simple trick not everyone learns. You will often be asked questions for which there is no answer, or for which there is no possible way you can know the answer. The interviewer is looking to see what happens when you are presented with such a situation, because its going to happen in your actual job.
You can pretend to know the correct answer and spew BS. Wrong.
You can shrug and give up. Wrong.
The "correct" answer is to say "I don't know. But: here's what I think."
That's what they hope you do on the job. Admit you don't know, but don't give up.
Why should you hire me instead of those three guys? I don't know. But: here's why I think you should hire me.
Or, as Liquid put it in a different context:
If someone asks you a question like this, they're trying to see if you think critically about games. Don't answer the question literally, find an alternative answer that shows them what they're really looking for. |

I got hit with that question once, not exactly that way, but similar question.
My answer was: "I don't think you will ever have anyone come here just to tell you they suck, Of course I'm going to tell you I'm the guy you want. But tell you what, I listed a bunch of people form my previous job you can feel free to call. I'm sure they will tell you I'm the one you want."
Mind you: I was not bluffing. I left my previous job with people begging me to stay. Did not matter much, they never called the references and, from what I was told later by the HR guy, after I left the company owner (guy that interviewed me) dashed to HR and said "thats the guy I want."
I like to think I'm good with interviews, and never apply for a job I don't think I can't tackle... but I write some horrendous resumes. May be getting better though. Last resume I wrote got me a job darn fast.

The truth is many interview questions are Kobayashi Maru questions: there is no correct answer they are a test of character.

Or, as Liquid put it in a different context: They are looking to see how you think, and what your attitude is. And most important, are you comfortable exposing your thought process to others; probably the most important skill in any collaborative design environment. |
There's been plenty of times when someone says something to me (not just in interviews) and I can't think of a good answer (or witty reply) and that night or the next day be like, "OH!, I should have said x! haha that would've been great!"
Love working in a team environment. No one knows everything...I freely admit I don't now a lot of things but I know where/how to research 'em (for the most part).

I only did that for one resume, and I figured since the guy that encouraged me to send it was called "Castle" it may as well fit in there!

hehe, that reminds me of a friend that applied for a job at ThinkGeek (or the company that runs ThinkGeek.com) and for his cover letter he had things like, "while dodging nerf gun arrows and surviving in rubber band wars I was still able to do x, y and z."
Supposedly they liked it...and now he works there!

I wondered if you would have been playing at all were it not for my then-boyfriend and I getting Kristen interested in it?
|
Did she ever keep playing? Unfortunately I really lost touch with her after graduating from UCR, but it was cool to hang out with her during lunchtimes .

Other things, like the AE offline editor, I started while working on a very boring office job (one of the few times the people who hired me really forced me to keep to a schedule even though most of my time was wasted that way) and so I did most of the work during idle time in that place. When I dropped that job (which I did as soon as I could) I didn't even bring the source code back home with me.
I would have been much more useful to the community if I hadn't the attention span of a squirrel on crack.

I totally intended to update the OP with pictures when we got back from the honeymoon, but... well, okay, we were too busy playing CoH. We hadn't played since the announcement!
Anyway, the first post has pictures now! Plenty of them! I hope this doesn't count as thread necromancy, it's not that old, is it?
Hey Liquid, Hey Fatare,
Ghost Falcon here (I'm posting from my personal play account). (Proof - I uploaded several pictures of you that I had taken from past HeroCons to your ftp earlier this year. ) Belated congratulations on your wedding! I'm glad to hear that you two finally tied the knot. All my best, -Jesse (formerly Ghost Falcon) |

Yeah, I remember that. Our marketing team was looking for some interesting stories. I'm not sure how or if that was ever used. |

Whoa! No. No, we do not.
Hmm, perhaps that was what Positron was thinking when he gave the reaction he did to her dressing up like my character, though.
(We got a really good laugh from your post, by the way. )
Congrats to you both on the marriage.
