Hate NCSoft? Maybe think again
No. Not when their only excuse is "It doesn't fit into our restructuring." Maybe when or if they ever come out with a GOOD reason, maybe then. But in the meantime, they've just killed off one of my favorite MMO's, and fired the best studio that I know of.
I get what you are saying, but please stop asking people to not be angry at the people responsible for killing CoH in the end.
"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
I wouldn't be angry if they were at least offering to sell the thing. But no, they're content to let the IP rot for eternity.

But I'd also like to add that NCSoft has done much worse in the past.
I used to play Tabula Rasa alongside City of Heroes, so I think I've got plenty of reason to be bitter with NCSoft. When TR died, I vowed that City of Heroes would be the only NCSoft game I'd ever touch again, because I thought it was old enough and big enough to survive this kind of crap.
I was wrong, and NCSoft won't be getting any more of my money, no matter how cool their latest titles turn out to be.
This.

That was 2009, how was that lawsuit resolved? Anyone know?

All I've seen indicates what they want is to do is offload this. Get it out of the portfolio ASAP and balance their books. Selling it would take time and resources unless they struck lucky and they weren't prepared to take that chance.

I don't forgive NCSoft for murdering my dog even if they saved it when it was a puppy a few years earlier.
Sorry.

I'm only ladylike when compared to my sister.
I think I've posted this at least four times in other places, some on these boards. But I will say it again:
I am very upset with NCSoft for dumping City of Heroes, but I cannot logically hold any ill will against that decision. They made a logical business decision, I grant that.
What I find inexcusable is the manner in which they handled it: no three month grace period to give one of their longest running titles a chance to rally, no ideas for bringing in more revenue, not even two weeks notice for the Devs! Paragon Studios went into work on Friday to find out they no longer had jobs.
Immediately shutting down a game may be good business. Immediately shutting down a person's livelihood is just bull****. That is my problem with this whole situation.

That might be overstating the damage here. No beloved pets have died as a result of this decision. Let's try and keep a sense of perspective.
I do understand how their actions have left many many of us in bits - but melodrama isn't going to fix anything.

He isn't being literal. I am not sure if you are purposefully missing his point, or if it just whizzed past you.

BUT... and my point remains - we had many more years of pleasure than we might have because at one point NCSoft stood up and did the right thing.
That doesn't excuse how they are behaving now but it does take out the "Oh noes, NCSoft is ebil" line.

No,
They were a company that bought a product that had the makings for a successful run.
That product was still making it's successful run when they decided to cut it and a community that was supporting them.
If I'm to give them any credit at all, it will be if they decide to support our community and allow CoH to continue development elsewere. Until then I've got nothing for them.

He won it. NCSoft tried to appeal the decision, but he won it again.

That was corporate misconduct, and heck, I'd even argue that it was character assassination; they made Richard Garriott look like a crazy loon who skipped out of town the moment he got a chance to go into space.
I don't think NCSoft went that far this time around with Paragon Studios, but it shows how far they're willing to go. Almost as bad as CEO Bobby Kotick of Activision and his "Project Icebreaker" crap.
I didn't miss his point. I'm trying to put this in perspective. This is very very bad. Nobody's winning here and some very good people have lost their jobs.

If NCSoft were to even consider selling the IP, I can almost guarantee you that they would never sell it to Garriott.
|
On that note, I'm kind of sad Garriott didn't try to include rights to Tabula Rasa's IP as part of the lawsuit, but I guess he focused on the battles he knew he could win.
Well things changes, Company's changes, Who ever decided this on Coh, is a dick. Not only they hurt the players, but those good people at Paragon Studios who lost there job.

Let's remember - NCSoft saved this game.
Don't ever forget that. We might be really upset and angry with them right now but without NCSoft, City of Heroes would have died in 2007/8.
Cryptic were about to can it to move forward with the then Marvel IP they had won the rights to develop that then became CO. They were the first body to cast CoH aside - and it took NCSoft to step in, and buy the Cryptic dev team ("all except one" is how I believe it was phrased at the time) and create what ultimately became Paragon Studios.
But with that change, Paragon went from strength to strength. The game improved immeasurably once Posi and War Witch were given free rein - and that then led to the whole GR/End game thing.
We can justifiably be angry at how they've dealt with this - but it was their decision to invest in CoH again, that kept it going as long as it did. For NCsoft it was a purely commercial decision without emotion. For us, it really hurts. But without them taking the commercial decision to save it we'd have missed four years of Paragon City, and experienced none of the levelshifting Praetoria we know now.
So - hate them if you will... but also cut them a bit of slack.
Just a thought
