Where did the game go wrong?

I remember reading that around 80 people were let go.

That's just amazing. For StarCraft 2, they needed 2,200 people for the game.
To think this game ran 8+ years on 80 people +/-

Well, to be honest, if Starcraft 2 needed 2200 people, then that would make it the largest developmental staff *ever* for a game. NCsoft has just 3000 employees (according to Wikipedia), and most MMO's typically have a headcount (at least during crunch time) of up to 300 people.

After City of Villains was released, i believe the head count was just 15... and stayed that way until soon after the buyout by NCsoft, where more funds was made available to hire more people *specifically* for City of Heroes.

I don't get my hopes up often--I find that optimism (or pessimism) keeps me from seeing the world as it really is and preparing accordingly. But when you say it, I almost believe it.

Anyway, the game had its flaws--what doesn't?--but they weren't fatal flaws, singularly or in aggregate. What "went wrong" was that nothing lasts forever.

Yeah, I'm sure that making less money will somehow cause them to make more money. Good job, NC Soft!
Look at it this way:

NC Soft is short on cash right now, so they need to think about where they're going to invest it.

If they invest $100 in Paragon (and yes, I'm just making these numbers up), they get $110 back.

If they invest $100 in GW2 (for example), they get $150 back.

They have $1,000 to invest. What does the smart person do?

As for the whole "City of Hero" fiasco, it wasn't because Asians hate western super heroes, it was because there was no such thing as end content in the game until like 4 years later, and in most of the MMO world, the end content is the main meat of the game.

That's not the game's fault. That's still NCSoft's fault for not promoting it.
I personally also blame eastern culture and anime's "popularity" for the death of something I love. Hell, half the global channels I listen in on ingame STILL spout effluvia about their favorite anime shows or live action crap adaptations. That part is a culture war. Not entirely NCSoft's part...that falls back onto us, for making it so popular game corporations pander to that market so they can keep making money and go live in forty room mansions while those of us who make that money for them go live in an apartment with forty other people.

Bottom line? Corporate greed killed this. And you lot enabled it. Because I sure as frell hate manga, anime, and the whole eastern cartoon style. Ditto those silly as frack live action shows.

So....in closing....*points at sig* GG....listen to papa Carlin.

Wow, you're quite a character. If Carlin was alive he would call you a ******* moron for getting worked up over a video game.

Go home, troll. It's not the fracking game, it's the corporate greed that killed it. And the people I've come to know in this game that are hurt. You just poked THEM too. Ditto with all the other good people in this game that are just as equally hurt by what's been done. Do us all a favor and tie a large rock to your ankle and jump off a bridge.

You should have seen him in the anime thread right before the announcement. He has serious issues.

It's not shocking at all that he's trying to exploit this event to further his hatred.

I wish they would of listened...they barely made it a year with freedom.
I'm confused. The Thread's title implies you're asking US for the answer, but your implies you already know the answer, but the truth is that there ISN'T an answer - the Game didn't go wrong, the company just didn't want it anymore.

And a hearty f*u*c*k* you too.

Once more you miss the entire point. CORPORATE GREED. Not my outrage, not your ambivalence, not that ninja's stupidity....but the crap that kills people more efficiently than ANY war machine.

One last time. CORPORATE GREED.

Oh...and by the way....*points at sig*

Why do you keep replying to me then? Am I important? Do you like the look of my gams? Are you that much of a shut-in that arguing on the internet and communicating partly through gifs and youtube videos of a dead comedian fulfills enough human interaction that makes you get through to the next day?

Actually, he's not. If you haven't been paying attention the past 30 years, corporations have made so much money that they have more money than all of the sovereign nation's combined. The biggest economies are not countries, but corporations: They have the most capital out of any nation, even the U.S. and China.

If you haven't been reading any of the news, there is an estimated 4 to 20 trillion, that's right, 20 trillion dollars held up in the Cayman Islands as a result of corporate greed.

There was once a time that corporations gave a damn about their image and would bow to the pressure of their consumers. Nowadays everyone is so damned apathetic they know that they can get away with price gouging and charging way too much money on certain items and that we won't stand up to it. It's people like you who think that everything's okay in the world when it's not. The charger for people's I-Phones for instance is actually worth 2 dollars yet Apple charges 20 some odd dollars for it. And it's okay to pay that and it's okay for apple to have 1 trillion dollars in its coffers, isn't it?

There is too much corporate greed and mercykilling's outrage is my outrage. I'm not just angry at NC Soft, what has incensed me is the greed on NC Soft's part, much like its corporate brothers and sisters, and their disloyalty to a studio that has consistently performed well. The game has made money, just not enough, which is what mercykilling's posts are all about. For corporations, there will never be enough money to be made and it's why capitalism has decimated our economy; and we're only in the beginning of it!

1) Y'know...you're right. First time for everything, I guess.
2) No.
3) No.
4) No.

Good day to you. May the gods have mercy on your soul.

One person. One person to see the truth of it all. At first. That's all it takes.
Thank you. And to you...I ask to let as many people as you can know. Time to end corporate greed and take power back from them. Because we -can-.

In mercykilling's defense, he doesn't have a 2,500+ post count next to his signature.

It's hard rp'ing as Peppy the Yiffing Fox and watching Carlin on Campus at the same time. He probably couldn't multitask anymore than that.

Because this is the first time I've felt strongly enough about an issue to not just let it go. NCSoft.....hades. ALL corporations must fall. Or be seriously restructured. There used to be a time where a product or service a company/corp offered sold well because of it's quality. Advertising wasn't a whole department, it was word of mouth. "Hey, Joe. This whatchamajigger made by so-an-so is really a good product. Give it a shot."

That's no longer the case. We're mass media stuffed and fed what to believe, what to buy, how to think...and we lap it up. I was JUST as guilty. This event opened my eyes finally. That's all I'm trying to say.
