Where can I find help naming a character?

Hello forums!

I'm having finding a good name for a particular character. I seem to recall there was a general thread in the forums dedicated to this particular subject, but I can't find it. Otherwise, where would be the best part of the forums to post up a character bio and some costume screenshots and ask for feedback for a character name?

Thanks a lot!

General Discussion or Roleplaying tend to get better response to 'help me name my character' threads.

Also, try the forum specific to the server you're trying to name the character on, since what's available varies from server to server. Virtue, Exalted and Infinity all have threads dedicated to that very subject, and other might too if you search.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

The virtue name watch thread (in virtue section) has a ton of great names, and often advice. You dont need to be using the name on virtue to grab one.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

I often google random things to find a name for my toons, as I am the world's worst name namer =P

Usually search 'funny character names' and the likes, as I dont take names too seriously.
Another toon I googled french names, found two, and pieced them together.

At times when I'm stuck and can't find a good name based on concept I break out my trusty Thesaurus.com and peruse it for synonyms. Then with a little creativity and luck...viola!

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

There was a Dilbert comic strip with a related idea. Dogbert had a program to create names for businesses by taking random terms from Astronomy and Physics.

Are you sure it isn't cello?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

The Virtue Name Watch thread is where I go. It's also where I dump all the free names I find. A lot of other forums have similar threads where the naming gurus congregate, but the Virtue thread is by far the largest.

Back in April '11, Tempest_56 gave us this spreadsheet of all the names compiled from the thread up until then. Clocks in around 24k names. Out of date, but plenty will still be free since the thread generates far more names than we use.

There's also the Seventh Sanctum superhero name generator.

Don't forget

Type in a word like "ghost" and get a ton of variants. I use that page all the time....

Well, if you'd just like to do that: Behind the Name's Random Name Generator. Oh sure, you could use it to find a name in a random culture, but why wouldn't you want to use their "Transformer" or "Wrestler" settings? Just scale down the number of names you want (1 or 2), check all of the boxes you want the words to come from and *poof* your new name.

It all depends on what sort of concept you have in mind for a character. But I too have used Google a number of times to aid in selecting names. This has even including using Goggle Translator to covert a name I really liked that was already taken in English but I converted to.. Italian, Spanish, Latin, Etc.

As an example I recently created a Plant/NA controller and wanted a name similar to Mother Narue or Mother Earth.. I went to Google and looked up Mother Earth and then hit the Wiki site.. I found numerous names throughout Greek and Roman mythology that referrred to Mother Earth and Cyblele Rhea was born [note: Both Rhea and Cybele were alternate names for the Goddes Gaia known as Mother Earth]

An example of using the translator .. I had a DP/Poison blaster and I wanted a name similar to Black Widow.. knowing full well I'd never get that in English. I translated it to Italian and the Widow Black (Nera Vedova) was born.

I have even used sites I discovered through Google search to translate a name I liked into Elvish. Decide what concept you are going for and start surfing the web.
