  1. Hello guys,

There's a lot of threads going up about what other MMO to play after the end of the Cities. A lot of these games are not available for Mac thought.

Does anyone know what our options are?
  2. Hello forums!

I've been playing an ice/ice dominator for a while and I really enjoy him. However, the name I chose when making the character, Winter Vagrant, strikes me as uninspired and not really fitting with his backstory. Could you help me choose a better one?

Here's the low-down on his backstory:

    Quote:
Growing up as an African-American teenager from a poor family in the 1950s, Dominic Jones's life was drastically influenced by two historical events: the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement.

The fear of a Russian atomic threat had motivated many scientists to experiment with radioactive substances, with the consequence of a sudden influx of metahumans with radiation-based superpowers and these new superhumans, as much a product of their era as regular citizens, fell on either side of the question of desegregation.

When one particular protest that Dominic was taking part in appeared to get out of control, one such newly-minted pro-segregation "hero" decided to intervene and used his powers to contain it, with tragic consequences: many of the protesters died in the following months due to tumors and radiation poisoning. Dominic was among those that fell ill, developing a particularly resilient kind of blood cancer that resisted all kinds of treatment available at the time. As an effort to save him and others, government researchers proposed a cryogenization scheme.

Now, more than fifty years later, Dominic has been unfrozen, but, to the surprise of all involved, it appears that the cancer, under the effect of the extreme cold, has over the years adapted his body and no longer poses a threat, but rather a source of icy superpowers.

Dominic has since taken up the mantle of superheroics and joined the Ouroboros Menders, where he watches over the timeline together with his partner Forgebreath.
Although good-hearted, physically, Dominic looks quite imposing. A big, muscular black man (well, post-cryogenization his skin is blue). He uses the huge male model and most of his costumes have him bare-chested, brandishing a large blade of ice and wearing his hair in a short mohawk (I think the haistyle is called "fighthawk"). I'll try to post some screenshots later.

"Winter Vagrant" just doesn't it cut it for someone who's that in-your-face. I'd like a name that's punchy, while still evoking icy powers in some way. Although he works for Ouroboros, I'm not necessarily looking for a name that starts with "Mender". Also, if possible, a name that rings well when said together with "Forgebreath", his partner, as in "____ and Forgebreath" or "Forgebreath and ____".

Thanks a lot for any input on a good name, and feel free to comment on the concept!
  3. Hello forums!

I'm having finding a good name for a particular character. I seem to recall there was a general thread in the forums dedicated to this particular subject, but I can't find it. Otherwise, where would be the best part of the forums to post up a character bio and some costume screenshots and ask for feedback for a character name?

    Thanks a lot!
  4. Thanks a lot for the replies! And the build! I'd been traveling for the last few days and couldn't answer.

So far I'm really happy with the combo. I've picked up Life Drain because the fast animation lets me cast it without missing out on healing time, and a second self-heal makes me feel safer on a character who will have little by way of Control or debuffing until the Lich comes along. I'm actually considering skipping Thaw and getting the new Injection power when i24 hits.

As a side note, it had been so long since I'd last played a Mastermind that I'd forgotten the most entertaining part: naming the pets!
  5. Hello guys,

I have a decent concept for a Dark/Nature Controller which I'd like to try out. It looks like a decent combo that can really shine on teams. There's a catch, though: the character's backstory would require that I level him through Praetoria, and seeing how many people run there, I'm afraid it may end up being a solo stint (Cole's thought police do a very thorough job, it seems).

This would normally not be a problem, I've leveled Controllers before and even took one solo through Praetoria already. However, that was a Mind troller, which has an excellent single target chain from level 4 onwards and can perma-sleep groups to leverage that chain. This has made me realize that I seem to play damaging Control sets on Controllers (Mind, Grav, Illusion) and non-damaging ones on Doms (Ice, Earth, Electric).

My question is thus: Without cheating and resorting to Vet rewards, how does a dark/nature Controller deal any damage in the early levels? Should I pick up the single target immob? Air Superiority? Wait until i24 for the revamped Fighting pool? And if I have to postpone primary/secondary power picks until later, what powers are less vital?

Thanks a lot for the input!
  6. Alright, started on this yesterday and I'm really excited.

Viral Threat (sadly, Viral Agent was already taken) has the power to infect others with a terrible illness that mutates them into mindless zombies. Citizens should be warned that the illness is highly contagious. Side effects include coughing fits, pyrexia and delusions of invulnerability. Should you experience extremely high fever after being exposed to this supervillain's powers, please contact your physician immediately.

The "patients" (both henchmen and teammates) with fever so high they manifest physical flames are just hilarious to watch.

I'm still wondering what pool powers to pick up. Combat Jumping, Hasten and Assault are a given. Not sure about which other leadership powers would be useful, although I like to pick up Vengeance on every character that has a combat rez (Veng'ing and then not rezzing the poor person is just impolite!).

As to APP, I'm leaning towards Soul Mastery because I really like Oppressive Gloom and it would let me add "fits of dizziness" to the list of symptoms, but the concept is fairly elastic, especially with upcoming customization.

Are any of the personal attacks worth taking? Maybe Gloom and Life Drain? They both do more damage than any of the APP single target blasts.
  7. Hello!

I've come up with a concept for a character which would fit Necro/Thermal pretty well. However, before I roll, I'd like to check whether there's any decent synergy between both powersets. I'm a bit discouraged by the fact that all pets lack any inherent Lethal resistance and only the Zombies have Smashing resistance (Really? But the Grave Knights wear armour!).

I didn't enjoy Thermal very much as a Corruptor secondary because it doesn't offer any self-defense beyond the self-heal, but I've enjoyed playing a Pain Mastermind to 50 and I'm thinking it could be more fun with so many targets to take care off. However, unlike /pain, I don't expect /therm to lend itself well to Tankerminding due to said lack of self-defense tools.

So I ask you: Could this combo work? It can't be worse than Mercs/Poison, can it?

Also: What would be good pool powers and APP/PPPs to supplement this build with?

    Thanks a lot!

My experience has been that there's something people find mesmerizing about having a button that makes you shout in capslock. If you have a couple of teammates try out their binds in leaguechat before the trial starts, suddenly a whole lot of people will want to try it out for themselves and make their own binds. No idea what the percentage is, but it seems high enough.

On the Keyes trials I've been on in Defiant, we start out by having everyone bind "DISINTEGRATING - CHARACTERNAME - TEAM # - ARCHETYPE" precisely so that the healing-capable leaguemates have an easy time finding the right person (find the team -> find the archetype icon -> check the name). People are also instructed not to hit the button more than once. It works pretty well despite the trials being mostly PUG, apart from a few regular team leaders.

Maybe instate that policy in your server?

Actually, the mez protection from Increase Density only applies to the main target of the buff. Everyone else only gets the Smashing/Energy resistance buffs.

    Genesis?

Don't know about Genesis, but I'm hoping the Mind slot will be some sort of AoE control power. It's what I'm missing to round out characters that lack a control or debuff set.

    Figuring/wishing it goes like this:

Types of powerset and Incarnate slots:

    Blast sets -> Judgement
    Buff/debuff sets -> Destiny/Interface
    Henchman sets -> Lore

Control sets -> Mind? Your flavour of AoE hard control (hold, stun, confuse, fear)
Armour sets -> Vita? A power that helps self-survival significantly without being a team buff.
Melee sets -> Omega? I'm thinking a big single target attack, stronger than Judgement
  12. For a jokey, non-ice concept, I used to have a character called The Spirit of Menthol. He was a reanimated corpse who had used so much menthol to try to cover up the stench, that he'd developed super-refreshing powers. His ice effects were a minty green.

I do agree that it's a difficult armour to recolor. Most of the shades of blue allowed look really odd to me.
  13. Could we have chest hair options for males?

I can currently fake it for some of my characters using the Monstrous Fur chest under an open jacket, but I have a bunch of heroes who would like to be able to go shirtless without having to wax everything off.

Something as simple as combining the front of Monstrous Fur with the back and arms of Bare Chest Muscular would do the trick nicely, maybe with nipples added.

    Thanks a lot!
  14. Hello guys, here's my 2 inf:

The dev line that they "balance around SOs" has taken a whole new meaning with the arrival of Free and Premium players, who are locked out of the IO system and may not be able to afford it. If you're going to argue that Blasters are fine solely because they can function when slotted with IOs in a particular way, you might as well switch Blasters for Controllers as the AT Freemiums are not allowed.

The performance of any archetype, including Blasters, should stem first and foremost from the way their powers work. Defense bonuses shouldn't be the first line of protection for any character whose powers don't directly provide defense.
  15. Thanks a lot for the input! My DB/SR will be my second stalker after the huge success of my elec/elec and I'm sort of scared that Stalkers, with their recooked primary and secondary powersets, might have a thing like Dominators, where some Assault sets are really good and others merely passable depending on what powers were taken out of the original sets.

I'll be making a /nin stalker once we get Ice Melee as a primary, I think. Coloured blue, the powerset is full of ripple and water splash effects and I really like the idea of an assassin who leaves no traces because his blades melt.
  16. Sorry if this counts as threadjacking, but I wanted to ask: do I lose a lot of performance by taking SR as my secondary instead of Ninjitsu? Nin wouldn't quite fit my concept of a gentleman fencing thief.

Which is why I questioned earlier why wasnt this placed in lightning field ( which makes more sense to me )
You can use Power of the Thunder (new Lightning Clap) outside of combat and it will still give you the full boost without hitting any foes, from the information given. The buff lasts for a full minute so it won't disrupt your sapper lifestyle at all.

I tried suggesting a "Struggle" mechanic before. While mezzed, the two primary blasts that we're allowed to use would grant 2 points of mez protection for 20 seconds when used and the secondary power would grant 0.5 points. Using these powers would allow the Blaster to shrug off a mez in the couple of seconds it takes to cycle the attacks to have enough mez protection and return to the fight.

Try Dark Blast! You can colour it brown for earth or greenish for a sort of spore blast, and the green tentacles will look like vines growing out of the ground.
  20. I admit I haven't read the whole thread, so excuse me if this has been suggested before.

My suggestion to Blaster mezz protection would be to add a "struggle" mechanic that builds up on the current Defiance. When mezzed, every time you use one of those 3 powers that we're currently allowed to use, you'd be granted two points of mez protection for the next 20 seconds (maybe 2 points for the primary, 1 for the secondary). Chaining those attacks would eventually allow you to break free from mezz effects. As a Blaster, you'd still get mezzed (which I honestly find thematic), but you can shake it off in a short time through sheer Defiance and will to attack.
  21. Hello forumers,

I've been trying to get some pointers on help, but I thought I might as well ask here, since I have a couple of questions:

What are the synergies in fire/energy and what pool powers support them the best?

Do I understand "jousting" correctly? Do I run past the enemy with Superspeed and Total Focus will animate when I'm out of melee range?

Is Power Boost worth taking with a primary like Fire, that has no secondary effects or controls, and an APP like Flame, where the shield is resistance based?

Is Conserve Power enough to deal with end issues?

Why do I see so many builds that skip Rain of Fire?

Should I aim to get Aid Self, or is there some other pool that would be more useful?

    Thanks a lot in advance!
  22. I'm not going to post a build, but here's how I make my grav/storm work. The only IO's I have on him are a +stealth proc in Hover and a frankenslotted set of Dark Watcher's Despair for max end redux and tohit debuffing in Hurricane. I play at +0/+4 at level 50.

    Toggles:
    - Steamy Mist (slotted only for end redux)
    - Hover (with +stealth, full invisibility thanks to Steamy Mist)
    - Hurricane (who needs defense when no meleers can ever reach you?)
    - Ice Armor (ok, some defense does come in handy against the odd ranged attack)

When Grav Dist Field isn't up (about 2 mobs out of 3):

I travel invisibly until I'm a couple of feet in front of the mob, leaving a couple of feet of gap between the edge of my Hurricane and then.

I start my strategy by using Recall Friend to put the Singularity in front of the mob and make him swallow the alpha, ensuring also that he contributes during all the fight. I fight at range, so if I don't do this, I find he tends to remain behind me, too far away to see the span.

Then I create my "danger zone" by setting up Freezing Rain (available every mob with 3 recharge slots) right under the mob and targetting Wormhole to the gap in front of me between Hurricane and Freezing Rain. This means the monsters get ported and thrown back into the Rain. I add Crushing Field to reduce wandering and then cast Ice Storm and Lightning Storm.

Beyond that it's just a matter of using the hold and slamming things with Lift and Propel, racing Singy to who can kill more enemies (he always wins). A single hit of Propel with Containment is enough to take about three fourths of a minion's hp under the resistance debuff of Freezing Rain.

    It's easy and fun!

When Grav Dist Field is up, I start the fight with that instead and proceed to set up the "danger zone" sans Wormhole.

If there's only one mob in sight, I add Tornado for seasoning.
  23. I'm unsure about Corruptors getting Empathy and Force Fields. They're pure buffing sets, which I think goes against the Corruptor concept of using their secondary to amplify the damage of their primary.

For everyone else, sure, Masterminds could get a lot of mileage out of Empathy, Kinetics or Radiation, I'd love an elec/traps or mind/pain controller and Pain on a Defender could be excellent.

I do shudder a bit at the thought of having Poison as a primary powerset, though. :/
