Today, I Finally Found Red Robin #13...

Which I couldn't seem to get anywhere, even online, for two years. None of my local comic shops had it, tried ordering online twice and both times the mail lost it. I was almost afraid to buy it from the DC Comics app thinking my phone or tablet would spontaneously combust. However, I recently found out that if I gave a list of comics I was looking for to my local comic shop, they would work on getting it to me, and today they had it.

Now, while I was excited, that's not why I'm making this thread. I know we've discussed the New 52 a couple times in recent months, but after going back and reading these RR books now that I've pretty much completed my collection, I wanted to see what people's thoughts were one year later (and get mine off my chest).

Simply put, I'm not impressed. I started off liking Nightwing and Batman, but as it's gone on I've seriously lost interest. I read RR #13 tonight, then 14, then 15, then 16, and didn't even think about it. Just pulled the next one out of the stack and kept going. So far, none of the New 52 books I've read have been able to do that. I walk into the comic store now and think "the next New 52 Batman....or The Long Halloween?" In this case, I went with the latter. I know TLH is considered one of the better stories compared to other pre-DCnU material, but my point is "why bother reading new Bats when this 15-year-old book about him is so much better"?

My "meh" feelings aren't just about the books not being exciting enough, but also such goofiness as Damien being 10 years old, but Bruce has only been active as Batman for roughly 5 years. Somehow, in 5 years Dick was the first Robin, got sick of it and became Nightwing, Jason became the 2nd Robin, died then became the Red Hood, and Tim became the 3rd Robin, had a falling out with Bruce (according to DC's wiki site), became Red Robin, and formed the Teen Titans. I know things can get convoluted over 20 years and continuity gets tangled up, but this is all over the span of like 3-4 years.

Anyway, these are just my views on the Bat-family part of the New 52. Maybe the other DCU comics are doing better? That's for someone else to post about. From what I've experienced, though, I just wish they'd have another Flashpoint-like event that takes things back to the last universe.

Sorry for the rant, but this is the only outlet I have for comics related stuff.

Can't stand Nu52. That said the Legion isn't too bad (how bad can it be with Levitz on it?) but I can't say I've been following it religiously.

As someone that loved (loved!) the golden age characters their reboot is an abomination to me.

DC's New 52 hasn't really wowed me. I'll say it again but all it is was a way to merge the Wildstorm universe into DC pretty much the DC universe according to Jim Lee.

For me, most of the new 52 haven't been able to maintain their initial momentum. I find myself trimming a title or 2 every month. However some books HAVE done enough that interest isn't waning. Teen Titans is doing the best for me, and I'm at least ok with the various Justice League books.

It's not how many times you get knocked down that count. It's how many times you get up.

Merging Wildstorm in DC was a great idea!

DC Universe according to Jim Lee was a terrible idea.

The DCnU has been less than impressive. They pretty much scrapped their entire established history and continuity, for a new, sleek, and streamlined history that's supposed to attract new readers. That's fine. I understand that as a business decision.

BUT... it pretty much craps on all the long-time readers (like me) who happened to really love and enjoy the convoluted and often bizarre history and back story of their characters. The piecemeal way in which they're trying to say that some things happened and some didn't, that some things are canon and some aren't, it just doesn't work.

They should have had the balls to just come out and flat out say "we're starting over from scratch, forget everything you knew before, its done". The half-***** "soft" reboot just doesn't fly, and pretty much tanks the story behind many of their characters.

I dropped all my DC titles when the Nu kicked in. I've browsed through them since then and haven't seen any reason to regret my decision. It may be a DCU, but its not my DCU.

I like the New 52. Its the majority of my books every month. I've dropped some (Catwoman, Batwoman is on the edge), picked up some others, but overall I enjoy them as much as I enjoyed the books before. My favorites are Action Comics, Red Hood, and Supergirl. Teen Titans is usually fun. The Green Lantern Titles were sluggish for the past year, but its picking back up, and that's good. Justice league is okay--its no Avengers. Justice League International is alright--gotta get my Booster Gold fix somewhere. Batgirl is decent.

Though Red Robin was a sweet title.

I loved Red Robin. It was a great book I thought. Tim Drake is one of those characters that I've been following ever since I first started getting into comics in the 90's.

I miss him having his own book. I tried out the new Teen Titans, but it just didn't have the same vibe that it used to (but to be fair, that was kinda true even before the reboot).

But yeah, I am not a fan of the Nu52 at all. I'm not really reading any DC comics at all right now, and considering how much time I spent getting to know the Universe, that's kind of sad.

I just miss Stephanie Brown as Batgirl, or Booster Gold's whole metamorphosis as a character. I miss how Superman used to be - the newer stuff just seems to be too...off for what I was used to.

Agreed!

They could of even done it with a bit of background already in.

Batman has been Batman for quite a few years. He's gone through some Robins. Instead of being killed off...first Dick left to be Nightwing, Jason left to be Red Hood, Tim left to be Red Robin, and well, they could just forget about Damian all together >_> Want Babs back as Batgirl, they could of had Stephanie back as Robin which would of been better.

Superman can have been around for awhile, and if wanted depower him a bit for the new DCU.

They could of done a full reboot and put in some preplanned backstory and made it work.

Green Laterns? There's a few human ones now!

It just could of been so much better.

Has DC said anything on how things are going with the New 52? I know it first it was labelled a "huge success", but I figured that was more "let's see how badly they screwed things up" and less "I'm very interested in yet another comic book reboot".

Let me be reiterate too, my beef with it isn't just the cancellation of RR, but that something's just off about the whole thing entirely. I wasn't all that invested in the pre-New 52 stuff because I'd only been collecting since mid-2010 (not like many others who've been into it since the 80s with CoIE), I was just getting my feet wet. But there was a feel to it, that's just off now. Like I said, I was truly interested in the Bat-stories from Year One to post-Final Crisis where my collections started. But now, I'm just in a "meh" state when it comes to what's going on in the DCnU.

I totally understand your feelings here. I have pretty much every Bat-comic that came out post-Crisis right up till the Flashpoint event. I LOVE the way they built Batman's "family" up, the extended support group in Gotham City, and everything about it. The character development in Gotham in particular was amazing. Dick and Barbara and Tim and Stephanie and Cassandra and Jim Gordon and Renee Montoya... I could go on and on.

And that happened all over the place. When they let the 2nd generation of heroes step up to replace their mentors, they made better characters in a lot of ways. I don't care what anyone says, Wally was a much more interesting Flash than Barry. Kyle (and Guy for that matter) are much more interesting GLs than Hal. And don't even get me started on how they've marginalized the Martian Manhunter in the DCnU.

What I really wish they had done was to just declare that the old DCU was Earth-1 (or any other designation they wanted to use). Then say that the DCnU is Earth-27 or 31 or 43 or anything they wanted. They could have moved wholesale to the new dimension within the Multiverse, while leaving the previous incarnation intact.

See, the way I understand the ending of Flashpoint is that this is a slightly different Earth. One of the last pages has shows 4 different versions of various DC heroes. The one on the lower left appears to be pre-DCnU, the one on the lower right (where Barry ends up) is the one we're in now. Maybe I read it wrong?
