Took a chance and was pleasantly surprised!

I've been slowly leveling a Soldier of Arachnos for a few months, going Bane at 24 because I liked the Elemental and Celestial weapon options for the mace (Yes, "Hammertime" was a battlecry for a short bit). I was fixated on Bane because...in my opinion...Crabs are ugly. I HATE the arms.

With that in mind, I was tired of languishing so much on my Bane build, I decided to burn a vetspec and see what life as a Crab was like...and I liked it. I liked it so much I immediately felt dirty.

ME: "I made a crab and I liked it!! There was so much AoE blasting!"

Inner Character Concept Fanboy: "STOP! What about the hammer? There is supposed be a hammer not cybernetic ARMS!!!! Remember, Thor? Celestial Mace smash?"

ME: "What if they're not 'cybernetic' arms?" I tried to cajole myself. "What if they're something else?"

Inner Character Concept Fanboy: "That's stupid, and you're a sellout for willing to violate my precious concept because it 'fits your playstyle.' Stretch loser."

(Yes, I have an odd inner dialogue.)

ME: "What about, Green Lantern, Gwen Tennyson, Quasar, Blue Jean, Cerise, and Bunker?"

Inner Character Concept Fanboy:"... I am interested and willing to subscribe to your newsletter."

So, about a day, a completely re-written character story, re-edited bio, and a name change later, I had a crab that was right in the "sweet spot" story wise and play wise. One of my controllers had to be shipped off to another server to free up a name, but the internal decisions for the blue-side character the SoA became took over from where the controller's story ended and was in sync with one of those powerset alterations that happen in comics.

The only downside is that the arms bounce around when I'm flying the same way they bounce if I'm running, it's annoying, especially since the bouncing stops when I go up, which makes the arms animate as if I'm jumping. Maybe there aren't that many flying Crabs so it hasn't been an issue? Traveling is slightly less fun. But, there could be worse trade offs.

Outside of wanting to share a case of alt-craziness gone too far, I was wondering if anyone else wanted to share stories of where you really wanted something and the mental hoops you jumped through to realize the concept AND play it.

Thanks!

crabs are amazing. I don't mind the arms because crabs are so rare the arms are fairly unique. You just need a concept for them.

Crab Spiders are fantastic, but I have a 50 Bane Spider as well and they're both great. Bane Spiders are what stalkers could have been IMHO.

For a fun visual use Beast Run on your Crab for a bit. I still have it on one of my bars just to run around and laugh at.

EDIT: I have the PPD costume power and when I use that on my Crab my "arm" grenades come out of my left foot. FOOTNADE!

Crabs are crazy good. Especially when IOed and incarnated.

Also if you take jump kick it looks like your brake dancing on your extra arms while beating people up.

Yeah Crabs are awesome. I've got all of the pet powers perma on mine so I have a small army of mechanical spiders following me around .

My concept is that Gustav Richter wanted to look like his older brother.
But he's more of a party guy. I have two power trays filled with macros for my favorite boombox tracks, dance moves and fireworks emotes. He looks a lot like John Travolta's character in 'Saturday Night Fever' and his name is Lord Footloose.

He's also fully IO'ed, has massive AoE, enough range defense to survive the return alpha strike and has both Tactical Training Assault and Leadership Assault so he boosts the entire teams damage by 30%. BAM!

In the process of doing the same thing with my Crab although her spiders aren't perma yet, currently call it mini-MM mode

There any must have powers to get the spiders perma?

Edit: My Crab also uses fly for travel and I love the moving arms. Makes it looking like she is crawling her way through the air.

I feel that I should point out that my crab skipped all the pet powers and omega. I went for the shark PPP and got MOAR AOE.

5 AOE powers kicks ***.

Hasten is pretty much required and you'd be foolish to skip Mental Training but other than that you can largely select the powers that you want. Pretty much every Crab power has an option for a decent recharge bonus so it's mostly a case of figuring out your budget and then selecting appropriate sets. You need about 100% recharge from sets (plus the 70% in Hasten and 20% in Mental Training) so Purple Sets and/or Superior Dominion of Arachnos help a lot there as well as Luck of the Gambler Recharge IOs.

It's also worth trying to get at least the Pet Defense Auras into your build (and possibly the Resistance ones as well but get the Defense ones first). If you stack both of those with double Maneuvers you pets get about 30% defense so they will last longer.

As a final note, if you have enough global recharge to keep the Disruptors and Patron Pet out permanently then you can actually keep the Spiderlings out Permanently without any recharge in the power itself. Personally I don't do that since I like being able to resummon them early if they die but it's an option to consider if you want to slot a Blood Mandate or Sovereign's Right set in them for the defense bonuses.

Same thing with me I went crab but before that:

My SoA is the only character to date for which I've used the option of having multiple builds. I went Crab first, but while soloing for quite a while it wasn't working out too well for me so I made a Bane build for soloing.

If I understand correctly, a third potential build is unlocked with Incarnate slots, at which point I may make a whaddya-call-it-Wolf-Soldier?-type build. I miss the AoE web grenade, though I can't bring myself to mix the gun with mace/leg attacks.

If you look long enough on the forums you can find some nice guides for them...I went with the Master Crab build, all the pets plus the Patron pet plus the Arachnos Toxic Tarantula pet from Lore...stuff dies fast, stuff dies REALLY fast.

These VEATs are so flexible and powerful...

I considered doing a Bane build on my Crab Spider but I think having the Crab Backpack on a Bane would annoy me to much.

This is why I rolled a second SoA so I could do a huntsman/bane build without the backpack. It was totally worth it though, my huntsman does tons of damage, is softcapped to everything but psi (including positions), and has perma-hasten. And all that was ridiculously easy to achieve.

As far as the OP, I've never had to alter a character's concept after it's been made because I found a funner playstyle. However I have rerolled characters when new powersets come out and fit the concept much better than what I currently have. I have had to jump through some mental hoops in order to play an ice armor character. In fact, I've made and deleted about 10 ice tankers, my current one is up to level 39 which is the longest I've kept one.

I'm actually kind of surging along. The Summer event helps a lot. I went ahead and used my second build to spec out my "dream" Bane build. It's hard to consider actually slotting it out though since I'm currently willing to only fully IO out one build. Who knows, maybe this will be the first character to have both builds fully actualized.

I just don't want to lose serum. I likes it! I likes it so much!
