Female Doctor?????

Interesting....something such as this could turn out to be pretty cool if done correctly and The Doctor didn't remain female for very long....

I say that because The Doctor has always been a male character and the fan backlash would be enormous!

The doctor changes hair color, age, eye color, skin color, and personality everytime he regenerates so it stands to reason that he can change gender since it is just another genetic alteration.

If the Doctor Who series want to keep just males as Doctor Who, then there needs to be an episode explaining that regeneration is gender specific by Rory, Amy, or some other companion asking why the Doctor only regenerates into males. Although, a scene between River and a female Doctor would be fun.

I'd watch it. So long as she can pull off the Doctor's eccentricism.

The episode "The Doctor's Wife" establishes that Time Lords can change gender via regeneration.

If you go back to "Lungbarrow" and some other writings (not canon in the current continuity) then gender is no longer relevant to Time Lord reproduction anyway.

I really should do something about this signature.

There we go. If Doctor Who stays on the air for another 10 years or more, then the chances of a female doctor rises until it becomes a certainty.

If not... hey, why not a current Rani. She just vanished off the scope long ago, didn't she? I don't believe she was actually killed at any point (officially,) last we saw was her getting sent off with the Master. At least as I recall.

Or she could easily be Romana who, after all, was left in another universe so, by the logic of 'The Doctor's wife' she should still be alive.

Personally, I think they could find a way to satisfy both. Perhaps the dying timelord has to CHOOSE to change sex or something. After all, they DID offer the Master a 'whole new regeneration cycle' in The Five Doctors and done it by 'utopia' So things have chances.

But I'd like to see Romandadevoratalundar (A.K.A. Fred) again.

Given the strange reverse timeline arc, she could easily be a new (or former) incarnation of River Song/Melody Pond...

Also, changes to a Timelord's regeneration are at best unpredictable (note first thing Tennant and Smith do is check the number of fingers and toes, and curse that they've never been ginger.) Considering that regeneration is triggered by painful-type death and seems to be a pretty frightening experience for all concerned, it would take a supreme effort of will to carry through any major changes.

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

It's established that some Time Lords have far more control over regeneration than others. Romana could select her appearance at will. The Master's backstory suggests he used regeneration as a disguise, and he deliberately chooses a younger (John Simm) appearance to parallel the 10th Doctor.

I believe Romana has established that Time Lords can regen into other species as well, cuz some of the bodies she tried out appeared to be more humanoid than human.

Time lords can trigger a regeneration from natural causes, but a fatal harm will almost always trigger it (Unless it.. "happens too fast" apparently? My only sticking point with 'Turn Left')

Romana's change has never been totally explained, it was really Douglas Adams being funny but no writer since has ever elaborated or expanded on it. Some speculation is that Female timelord were able to choose their regeneration while males are stuck being totally random (assuming the regeneration is self triggered instead of recovering from fatal injuries)

In many ways, the Doctor is a special case. As far as we have seen, he has never regenerated for any reason other than grievous bodily harm. And a few times he has had a very difficult time while regenerating. This is most likely because of what he does with his life.

Second Doctor regenerated when it was forced on him by the Time Lords as part of his punishment.

But yeah, any time we've seen a violent death, it's caused him to regenerate in a way he doesn't seem to be able to control.

Then there's K'Anpo from "Planet of the Spiders", who not only had his next regeneration picked out, he even had the new body hanging around on the sidelines waiting for him to take it over. I guess that regeneration energy can be harnessed in all sorts of ways if you're creative enough, and the Doctor just tends to take the path of least resistance.
