Seeing the "Statesman statue" thread got me thinking. Were players not promised a statue for there characters based on in game accomplishments? Where the "people of Paragon" would desire a statue of appreciation for your "service"? I know everyone is thinking technicalities, but that would be awesome!

No, we were never promised this in any way, shape or form. It comes up every once in a while as a player suggestion, but I don't think I've ever seen a Dev comment on it. also, where would this statue go? If it was in the game world, it would be constantly changing with all of the people on needing to be recognized.

LoL! I would love to be recognized!!! LoL But the constant change to the landscape would be doable. Think about a plaque here, a water fountain there. Or billboards posting monthly stats!!! The above mentioned crowd would love that!!!

Again, there's too many characters to do this to, though. The city would be buried in plaques before the day was over. And how do you propose the art team does this if they're permanent changes to the landscape?

If this was done, it would likely be one or two places throughout the city, and it would show your character only to you. Everyone else would see themselves as the statue. That's probably the only way it could realistically be done, which isn't what most people who suggest this want.

I think the closest ive seen of a player statue is in WoW. Theres a statue of the first team to take down the Some big boss in Dalaran, I think.

Rockshock (Druid Tanker), Medicat (Combat Medic), Dwarf From the North (Ice Mage), Rocket Gal (Energy Blaster), Graveborn (Undead Mastermind), Streeker (Punching Speedster), Op. Sidewinder (Recluse's pet Spider)

I don't think the art team would do this because of so many different costumes. They would I'd think have to imply the "phasing" technology and the "dopplehanger" mechanics from some missions to probably do this and I'm sure it wouldn't be easy.

I agree. I think it's one of those things that would take a lot of work to do to not make it suck up server resources, and in the end won't give them much bang for the buck. Maybe I'll be proved wrong, but I highly doubt something like this would happen.

As already mentioned this was never something that NC Soft promised or even proposed. It was a forum thread that, as I recall, suggested that any character reaching 50 level sgould get a statue. The probelm (s) with that were just how many statues does one player get? I personally have more than 40 character that would qualify. Now multiply that by the number of players in game with 5, 6 or 7 year in game and it quickly became apparent we'd need entire zones dedicated to nothing but statues. Then of course there was the situation concerning exactly who si going to build and place all these statues and considering a 50 level has at least 5 outfits (including halloween salvage) and possible as many as 10 these days.. does the player have to be contacted and asked to pick which look they want for their statue? It could have gotten to a point where there would have been at least one poor, overworked, constantly annoyed Dev doing nothing but statues.. Instead of designing new trials, new maps, new costumes, new missions, or whatever!
At one point some one suggested that each player would only get one statue to cut down on the problems.. Okay which character? Do I get a choice in the one I want? If I decide I like another character better at a later date can I recontact NC Soft to get my statue changed?

I forget how long the thread went and I lost interest and even stopped going to look but I can bet not a single NC Soft Rep ever once poked their head in and even said.. "We'll discuss this at the next planning meeting and get back to you". Now I suppose plaques would make life easier but again ... How many does a player get and where are we going to place these thousands of plaques? I just don't think we will ever see it happen.

*pictures City hall in Atlas literally covered from top to bottom and side to side with brass plaques.. and giggles*

I mean, getting a statue of yourself is really for your own personal self-aggrandizement. Does it really need to be in public? I could see this as maybe something for an SG base, but not anywhere outdoors.

Actually, in the early stages of the game development they talked about statues in various parts of the city that could change to show your character based on different achievements. That may have even been mentioned in the first E3 video they released.

I don't think it ever got anywhere past the "neat idea" stage however.

And of course, this was back before the revamp.

Back when Origin meant something.

Back when there was a more freeform type of power selection based on your Archetype.

I was always fond of the Gadgeteer idea.

Everyone who's shot the idea down here is right.

But! Maybe it could work.

What if, and I'm just tossing this out off the top of my head as I just came up with the idea ten seconds or so ago, players could purchase a statue of their character to be placed in some kind of "hall of fame"? Not with inf or merits or even Paragon points, mind you -- with reward tokens. Say, as a tier 9 VIP option, limited to one per account at a time, and only of a level 50 character on that account. Maybe even charge some exorbitant-but-not-impossible amount to keep the sheer numbers down (like the reason alignment change tokens and renames and server transfers cost 800 points) -- something like 3 tokens just to put the statue up, then another every month in "upkeep"? Maybe as long as you keep paying your monthly token, your statue could stay in a nice garden or marble hallway. Miss a month, and it gets moved to some slightly-less nice part of the facility. Miss another, and it "goes into storage" (is removed) until you pay for upkeep again. Want a statue of a different character? The sculptor's time is expensive -- that'll be three more tokens, please.

I'm also envisioning something using a modified version of the doppelganger tech to effectively just "reskin" the character automatically -- and possibly being able to select a specific pose/emote/power animation for the statue to use. But maybe, just maybe, a holographic memorial makes more sense than a stone one. Seems like it'd be a lot less work to just add transparency (like a Stealth IO) and a "flicker" effect to the existing design than a stone texture -- plus that preserves things like color, and patterns on tights, which don't really have any "depth."

That said, however, I'm not holding my breath here. I mean, I wouldn't pay that much for this, and it's my idea.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

Or Base Item.

It would be more than satisfactory IMO

Smurch's base item suggestion shouldn't be overlooked, folks. It's the only suggestion that involves letting friends gaze upon your statue/plaque, while not cluttering up the primary game world in any way. All of the technicalities and logistics described a few posts up would be handled by a pop-up menu offering you a choice of character/costume slot/pose, and my personal suggestion: a choice between a stone/marble/iron/elemental/holographic statue.

I highly suspect that this will be the only way this ever happens, if it ever happens. Benefits are obvious--you get to choose exactly where and how to display your immortal or memorial visage.

They've also got statues in Ultima Online (stop snickering, it's my other virtual home), but they can only be displayed in/on player-made housing. There are various materials and hues available, and it is a 6-year veteran reward.

Ok the base idea is outstanding! This way, the Halls of Justice wouldn't be the only sg base with statues. This would allow us to remember or learn about players who maybe aren't playing anymore but helped build what is goinng on now in sgs.
