Were Cell Phones a QoL addition?

I don't remember the answer to this--I started in i3 and it seems like I ran back to contact every time (especially prounounced when all of the Bricks contacts sent you to FF and vice versa and there was no train connecting them). Maybe I just didn't realize they were in place when I was a new player.

Can someone tell me if cell phones to contacts was added later (maybe i4, i5?)?

Thanks.

Newer addition. I don't recall when exactly, but it was very welcome.

I'd guess in the mid teens if I recall.

Not soon enough, but very appreciated.

OK Thanks. Good to know I didn't waste all of the travel time back then unnessarily.

AFAIK you could always call your contacts, the problem was it took FOREVER to unlock. It may be my memory exaggerating, but I recall being sent all over hell and gone by a contact only to FINALLY get their number on the last mission they handed out.

We get them so fast these days that I regularly forget I can call in and catch myself automatically heading back to contact. Ah, habit...

Can anyone confirm? I am just curious.

I can confirm that when the game launched you could get a Contact's cell number but it took running a huge number of missions.

I can't confirm being sent all over badplace and gone by a contact only to FINALLY get their number on the last mission they handed out.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Yea, you used to have to at least halfway through that little friendship meter (or whatever it is) with a contact before they'd give out their cell-phone number.

This is my recollection as well.

edit: Patch Notes 2010-04-28 Contacts give out their cell phone number sooner.

I recall it differently, but I'd not necessarily trust my recall. I might be thinking of TFs getting cell numbers added in or something..

And this is why I don't entirely trust my memory. Thanks for the documentation Star.

Specifically, they didn't give you a cell number until the contact relationship bar passed (passed, not reached, mind you!) the final tick mark in the meter. That applied to TF contacts, too, which was fun given the interminable pacing of the early TFs. Now they fork over the digits when you reach the first one.

That's my recollection as well -- the divisions on the meter represented various milestones (trusted enough to give Story Arc missions, trusted enough to give cell phone, trusted enough to unlock Enhancements in contact 'store', etc.). Some contacts were relatively easy to unlock, but many required you to be well into their Story Arc (if they even had one -- not all did) before they'd give up the cell number.

As I recall it, your Contact's relationship bar has 2 marks. After doing 2-4 missions, depending on if any were multi-part missions, you will reach the first mark. This unlocks the Contact's Insp and the Power-10 set of enhancencemant store, so he can start gouging you. After doing 1 long story arc or a lot of filler or street hunt missions, you will reach the 2nd mark which is usually 2/3rds along the relationship bar for most Contacts (not half way). At this point the Contact will give you their cell number and open the rest of his enhancements store, so buffer and debuffers can finally buy their DOs and SOs 5 levels after the DPS characters upgraded their slots. If you didn't want to be gouged, you can wait 10 levels before the brick and mortar stores would stock the non-Power-10 enhancements.

Wasn't it like five full missions and they cut it to three? for most contacts atleast.

THe thing that made it bad was there was a lot of Multi-part missions that counted only as 1.

This is why I hate Neal Kendrick, in Bricks. I won't take missions off that guy.

This is how it was^^^. You could complete entire story arcs on contacts, and never see the phone number pop. It was always a last second thing.

They still limit, to an extent, the inspirations they supply based on your relationship.

It was so bad I even made a video about the Envoy of Shadows arc where you save the world a couple times and Kato still wont give you his phone number.

I've been playing some low level (up to level 25) characters lately and I've been only needing to run one mission for the contact to get full access to phone and inspirations.
