Agreed.

That means each 32-bit application gets its own 2GB of addresses, and shares the other 2GB with Windows stuff, regardless of how much memory is installed.

Note that there are certain versions of 32-bit Windows that can recognize up to 64GB of RAM, using something called Physical Address Extension, but that doesn't change anything on the application side: applications still "see" 4GB of addresses, of which they can use up to 2GB, and the other 2GB is for Windows stuff.

(Edit: wording was too technical, I dumbed it down.)
It's less than that actually.

If I summon my pets before entering the mission, they remain with me, and they can attack the giant army with no lag at all and a perfectly green netgraph. The second *I* attack the army directly, netgraph gets stuck in the red, and a mapserver crash is extremely liekly.
The problem isn't latency either, at least not network latency. What you're measuring with netgraph is the response time of the server, and I believe when this mission (or any instanced mission) goes berserk the server stops responding to you or only responds slowly, because the mission itself is running slowly. This happens even if network latency is very low intrinsically.

I have an i870 with 16 gigs of RAM running Win7 x64 and my network latency to the servers averages about 60ms, and this mission dies on me every time I use AoEs (I haven't tried to single target my way through it yet). I think there's either some mission scripting going on to handle all the critters and its that scripting that is going bonkers, or its just the fact that there's a lot of critters densely packed in an open space with lots of clear line of sight overloading the combat engine, or both.

This...

I used Hand Clap but even using just HC took 5-10 secs of "LCTMS" before the damage was applied and mobs died.

My machine (and internet connection) can handle Mag itrials and Hami raids, etc just fine....

Yeah this...I tried it 5-8 times, sometimes with minimum graphics and got a ton of mapserves.
Running on gaming laptop, good other laptop and even office PC which is pretty darn tootin.

Yup, finally got it on the 3rd attempt.

Seems fine at the start, then gets progressively worse. I had Netgraph on constantly, it seems everytime I fire a power off, it goes nuts. I thought it was the amount of enemies on the map at once, but it was doing it even when it came down to just myself and Lord Recluse!!

It's a shame, reall. I WANT to wade in and fire off loads of thunderstrikes, I WANT to feel all powerful, but I can't

I guess whoever plays Tyrant in the Magesterium trial obviously has a better PC and a stronger connection to the server than us lowly players

Sorry to necro this thread. But I figured other people might be looking for info on this.
As of 07/03/12, it's still bugged.

However, there is a strategy for completion on the ParagonWiki page for the contact.

Basically stay near the starting point and draw smaller mobs to your position with Laser Beam Eyes. Then use LBE and Energy Smash to kill mobs. The other powers in conjunction with the ridiculous concentration of enemies seem to be what's driving the server into screaming fits and causing the mapservs.

Only advance once you've cleared most of the center of the map. It's slow, but it works. Just SUCCESSFULLY completed it today using this method.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

The only way I was able to complete it was by putting laser beam eyes on auto and then just sequentially targeting everything in the mission while moving as little as possible. That's an unfortunately crappy realization of such a theoretically fun vignette.

Back when I was having trouble with it, I tried that and still DC'd.

However, this last weekend I decided to try it again. And I went full-out, rushing into the middle of the enemies and cutting loose with the AoEs. I got some lag, mostly enemies not collapsing for several seconds after being defeated, but overall didn't have any trouble completing the mission.

I've got no clue what changed for me, but I'm glad I was able to do the mission for real instead of autocompleting after several mapserved tries.

(The ending was a bit abrupt; when I took out the last enemy the mission ended and I was kicked from the map. I assume that's how it's supposed to work, but it felt weird.)
