I think the fun comes in feeling powerful enough to ignore the petty minions and lts.
For me, it's just getting the stupid thing over with. It's by far one of the worst tfs just because of the hoops you have to jump through to get to the zone. First you have to unlock it, which is annoying for the 50th time, and then you have to either join an ouro arc that will send you to a contact there, use a mission tp if you have a mission to go there, or go to founders, croatoa or steel to get there via midnighters club.
When it takes just as long to get there as it does to finish the tf, you know something's amiss.
Devs - give us a beacon for Cimerora already!

As for why no beacon and why all the hassle to get there... it is located in the ancient Mediterranean. It's not that easy to get to. Come on. 
Also, it's called bragging right Thirty-Seven. HA HA I did it faster! Beat me now! You know, the chest thumping kinda stuff.

Because I like to run my mouth more than I should, I'm gonna chime in here.
When I first came back to the game after a lengthy hiatus, my first order of business was to get a lot of the badges - and there was an itf advertised as "speed itf".
At that time, I had no idea what that really meant, so I asked -I was told it was mission objectives only. Well, as my SOd out blaster lay in the dirt, and noone came to rez my poor ice blaster, I was convinced that I was missing something. So, I hit the forums, learned about IOs, and how we're better off now than we were before ED (overall).
Hello? Combat Attributes? Numbers? They're letting us see this? This explained so much that before I was so clueless about. And, I'm still learning more everyday, and I've been back over 2 years now.
(That's why I have a toon called Obtuse)
So, I would suggest that before anyone knocks it, they should try it. Don't try it unprepared, mind you. Try it with your toon as good as it can be. Blaze past petty minions that weren't going to give you a shard in the first place, and knock an EB around like he's graffiti.
I have to be in the mood to run these; some days I'd rather clear the whole map, or just confuse them into killing each other, or stand in the midst of them and taunt and let the rest of the team pick them off.
But, when you're in the mood for a speed run, there's really nothing better than seeing a time that's easily 1/4 of the average run, and to be fair, probably half as much time as most folks do a speed run.
A lot of you may not care for this tactic, and suggest that it makes people lazy for traditional teaming. It's possible. But, if it's fun, is it really wrong?

Great time on the run and congratz.
To the fun aspect...some people love collecting badges or working on SG bases. It cant get much more boring to me than that, but I can appreciate that someone else has a blast with those layers of the game.

Speed runs are their own type of fun. offer much the same appeal as a 'race.' Both against the clock as well as each other to accomplish more of the objectives. I think it embodies the 'incarnate' feel also.
They are not for everyone and not even for me all the time. But I enjoy chasing HighVolz around maps trying to not embarass myself.
