What are all the alternate universes we've visited/know of in the CoH universe? I need to know for Reasons.

Feel free to make some up if you think of something fun.

EDIT: see post below me for a useful link on this topic.

Oh, ta!

I know there's others that are just mentioned in passing and never visited. Like that dimension that Nemesis (mostly?) destroys that was mostly black.

Well I'm rather surprised the devs haven't given us the obligatory gender reversal universe yet. You know, with Stateswoman (Although I guess she's dead now.), Brother Brain, Electron (Positron as a gal.), Einherjar, Liberty Lord, etc., etc.

And I'm really hoping they don't go the route of a world ruled by zombies (As in the Marvel Zombies limited series.) cause I'm kinda sick of zombies now.

I've only come up with one interesting alternate Earth to explain the existence of one of my characters. It's all based around an obscure focal point in the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924. I've been meaning to write some stories about it because it really generates a lot of interesting questions and things to explore--but alas, I don't have the copious spare time yet.

If I think of some other unusual ideas, maybe I'll pop in this thread again.

Haven't done Admiral Sutter's Task Force yet, have you? (Look at the Notable NPCs. Sadly, or perhaps thankfully, I'm not referring to Praetorian Duray.)

No, I haven't. Not yet. I'll have to give that a try.

Pretty sure there's one that's exactly like our universe except there are no shrimp. And that other one that's just like ours except there are only shrimp. I read that somewhere...

It seems at the moment that Primal and Praetorian Earth are the strongest versions of Earth in terms of superpowered potential. Or something.

Anyways, there's a bunch of them, and feel free to make them up. The multiverse is vast and infinite. There's probably a dimension out there where dinosaurs are the dominant form of life still... now how'd that be for a crossover fight? Instead of War Walkers pouring out of the invasion portals comes a brace of Robosauruses.

Or a dimension where Nemesis automatons have built their own civilization. I assume zeppelins are common here.

Heck, the Hydra are from a dimension where the dominant life forms seem to be these mobile, gelatinous massive colonies of some kind of bacteria or microscopic creature. They're sentient in a way that's totally alien to our mode of thought to the point that it's tough for us to realize they're thinking... and probably vice versa.

There's a bazillion of them. Not a bad source of character concepts if you want to go wild, though you have to deal with the worldbuilding... which can be fun. I took a one off Portal mission as inspiration, and created for a character a world where Nemesis automatons built their own civilization after a disaster befell humanity (Haley's Comet in 1910, if you must know). So I have my heroic automaton girl.

I do assume that the dimensions we encounter in-game are the more dangerous ones that Portal Corp can't or won't send it's own teams. They call you in for special cases, so you get to see all the crappy dimensions while they're hanging out on Rainbows and Puppies Earth.

Just don't forget Hite's Law regarding Zeppelins:

Hite's Law: "All Change Points, from Xerxes to the last presidential election, create worlds with clean, efficient Zeppelin traffic. Changing history may produce Zeppelins as an inevitable by-product, much as bombarding uranium produces gamma rays. Often, the quickest way to tell if you are in an Alternate History is to look up, rather than at a newspaper or encyclopedia. From this premise, it is not outside the realm of Plausibility that our history between 1900 and 1936 was, in fact, an Alternate History. It would, at least, explain a lot."

Well sometimes the knowledge of certain dimensions being real could cause problems for both sides. Could you imagine the mass hysteria that would erupt if Portal Corp admitted they found Equestria?

The real reason the devs are working on quadruped rigs: Issue 25: The Pony Wars.

Long as they're not from Rikti America (Amerikti?), they could easily be called aliens!

Easy way to defeat their human follower adds: ask them 'who is best pony?' or shout 'Mysterious Mare Do Well'.

A few made-up realities I've toyed over for a while:

Stefan and Marcus never opened the Well, it was Back Alley Brawler and the original Manticore! With their new found power, they defeated criminals world-wide as an unstoppable duo. However, with what is the closest that can be found to world-peace, it left very few Heroes, and even fewer who are experience in fighting 'Super Villains'.. Well, it's a world ripe for the picking for any would-be scoundrel who are willing to share (until you don't want to, anyway) with Arachnos.

The Hamidon's experiments lead in a different direction, creating a zombie-like plague which in ineffective against mutants or those with tampered genetics/aren't human. The remainder of the world has been taken to the fortified Grandville after most of the Freedom Phalanx (And friends!) were torn down in the initial fights. A new team of Recluse, Statesman, Mako, Synapse, Mynx, Sister Psyche, Luminary, Frostfire, The Center, Ghost Widow and Positron (still trapped in suit). Center, Recluse and Statesman are working on tactics, Synapse and Dark Watcher finding survivors, Ghost Widow and Sister Psyche helping by scrying/psychically communitating with Synapse/Dark Watcher, Mako and Frostfire working on defending the island (Giant ice walls?) and Mynx helping Luminary and Positron keep Grandville running while trying to rebuild Citadel using parts from what used to be Black Scorpion. Your character is immune because of wibbly-wobbly reality-wality stuff.

In his early days, Positron's suit was breached and he destroyed a city, killing millions. This lead to a world-wide enforced ban of Heroes and the imprisonment of most of the Freedom Phalanx due to them withholding information on Positron's condition. The few who don't escape to the Rogue Isles where those with powers are praised end up as Vigilantes or go rogue under the pressure. With the Rogue Isles a bastion of Heroics and organised crime and viglanteism on the rise all over the world, they need help of another reality to show those in charge that It's Okay To Be Super!

Lord Recluse, in all his power, has taken over this reality. In a world of kill or be killed, it takes someone of uninmaginable power to bring justice!.. Or to take advantage of the situation. The Circle of Thorns, with help of the Midnight Sqaud and the Petrovic brothers have opened portals to Paragon for help. Our Recluse, on the other hand, is now in contact with his more successful self in hopes of setting a truce. When the alternate Recluse laughed and killed the messenger, our Recluse now wishes to take his place and is willing to hire anyone who wants to help.

While Portal Corps lists dozens of alternate dimensions in its story arcs, there are four which tend to be more relevant in the game's lore, Primal (where you spawn in the classic tutorial), Praetorian (where you spawn in the praetorian tutorial), Rikti (invaded Primal dimension in 2001 and currently confined to the Rikti War Zone) and Axis Earth (invaded Primal dimension in 1989 and the main antagonists of Dr. Kahn and Barracuda's Task Force).

Me, I'd love to see more alternate dimension parodies, maybe one where everything went right for Paragon City:

- 1989 (Jun) - Electron (the NPC suggested a few posts above) had the outlandish idea to construct impervium shutter-barriers over Portal-Corps' rings (Stargate-style), and since they failed to present the correct code sequence to open the shutters, the Amerika Corps met an unfortunate demise the moment they tried to cross over, or in other words, splat. It was eventually recorded as the shortest interdimensional invasion in the history of the Multiverse.
- 1991 (Mar) - The entire world prayed for the speedy recovery of the young Countess Crey, who slipped in her bathtub and hit her head on the floor. She fell into a deep coma that has lasted ever since.
- 2001 (Jul) - Electron mcguyvered a Rikti-translator and quickly realized the worldwide alien invasion had been brought on by a misunderstanding. She immediately negotiated a cease-fire with the Traditionalists, eventually putting an end to the Rikti War mere hours after it had begun.
- 2008 (Feb) - Tyrant and his cronies botched an attempt to kidnap Statesman. They had the misfortune to do so during Manticore and Sister Psyche's wedding, and between all the heroes gathered (including Hero 1, and a still active Miss Liberty) and Lord Recluse (who refused to let anyone touch Statesman but himself), the Praetorian Guard was quickly overpowered and sent to prison, where they remain to this day.
- 2011 (Aug) - An ancient cult of the apocalypse was said to have disbanded after their long-prophecysed doomsday failed to occur. Paragon City's skies were instead graced by a beautiful and unexpected meteor shower the night Galaxy Girl passed away peacefully in her sleep, with the people of Galaxy City taking it as a sign that their beloved heroine would still be watching them from up above.
- 2011 (Nov) - Miss Liberty attempted to negotiate a truce with a splinting faction within Arachnos, only to realize it was a trap meant to take her hostage. Fortunately, Electron had insisted she be implanted with a second emergency teleporter frequency, and Alexis deftly evaded her pursuers' clutches once they revealed their intentions. The Freedom Phalanx immediately retaliated, arresting every person involved and liberating Warburg from decades of Arachnos' influence. One of the perps kept jabbering about his decade-long masterplan being ruined all the way to the Zig, but nobody paid him any mind.
- 2012 (Jan) - Sister Psyche publicly anounced she would be taking temporarily leave from the Freedom Phalanx due to an unexpected pregnancy.
- 2012 (Mar) - After a late night partying and a little too much to drink, Heather Townshend inadvertedly dropped her grandma's necklace down a toilet. She kept blaming the guy up above all the way to her home, voicing her complains that nothing good ever happened to her. The woman woke up the following morning to the first clear blue sky Dark Astoria had seen in decades, and it was as if a great weight had suddenly been lifted from her shoulders. Maybe there was hope for the future, yet...

I've always considered that the different servers are alternate dimensions too. I've certainly played alternate versions of characters of different servers/worlds.

Well, I always assumed that Paragon's Portal technology allowed for an infinite number of alternate universes so we'd never be able to name and describe them all. This would also allow for infinite exact duplication too but never mind.

I think we can ignore the exact duplicate universes and all the universes with only minor changes to Earth's history--you know, the boring ones where the only real difference is that Synapse decides to have a ham and cheese sandwich and coffee for his Wednesday lunch instead of his usual fish tacos.

So we should just be talking about the universes where there are interesting differences--no, not just zeppelins either.

But do these alternate universes just have alternate histories? Or can they have alternate physics as well? Can we talk about universes where high technology doesn't work, where magic doesn't work or where absolutely everyone is a mutant with a power?

I suppose there are some that might want that. Me, I think I'd want the universe where there is no magic and the robots have taken over!

Given how magic in the CoH universe works, the robots taking over might well result in there being no magic. After all, that's what happened on the Rikti world. They somehow wiped out magic by destroying the gods' followers at some point in their history (or prehistory). Humanity gets deep sixed in a cataclysm, and the robots that take over might not have magic to play with.
