Try a Dark/Fire Corrupter. Tar Patch+Rain of Fire is pretty wonderful. And a team of Dark/Fire Corrupters is similar to a team of Fire/Rad Controllers -- everything melts in seconds.

Before this gets derailed into a "what primary will make Mental love /dark" remember I did say I had a bad and good experience with it. I still do have Demon/Dark MM that I enjoy playing (its 45ish right now). So if I'm rolling a /dark anything next it will be a troller.

As for myself, I'll probably use Dark/ for a Dominator and try to level a Gravity Controller again.

I won't be touching /Darkness Affinity. Fade and Soul Absorption are still mediocre powers at best and there's been absolutely no indication that they're getting improved in any way shape or form.

Fade is an 18.75% pbaoe defense buff that lasts for 15seconds on a 3minute recharge timer. It also has some Defense debuff Resistance.

Soul Absorption is a pbaoe regen/recovery buff that grants 30% Regen and 15% Recovery per defeated mob in a 20 foot radius. The buff lasts 30seconds and it has a 2minute recharge.


The incredibly poor uptime of Fade makes it virtually useless for anything but an Alpha absorber, but even as that it's long recharge means it's not likely to be available more often than every second or third group. If you don't need it 1/2 or more of the time, then you flat out don't need it, IMO.

The idea behind the power was a "Mini MoG" for your team, but it fails as that. Either it needs to have an equivalent amount of Resist added to it, to make it really count as an emergency use "oh sh**" power, or it's recharge needs cut down to something more palatable (say 2 minutes, that way on SO it's up for 15s once a minute) so that it can be up every spawn.



Soul Absorption either needs the buff to be frontloaded (Big buff for the first body, stacking smaller buffs for additional), or needs the recharge cut down a good deal.

It's modeled after Warshade's Stygian Circle, but what makes Stygian Circle the great power it is are it's very fast recharge, and it's large value heal/end return. That way even if there aren't more than a couple bodies to "feed" on it still provides a very tangible effect.

Soul Absorption keeps the main problem with Stygian Circle (bodies fade/scattered/being unable to really control where they die) and adds to that the need to "Herd" your teammates in for the buff in a VERY limited time.

Frontloading the buff values would allow you to more easily use the buff whenever it was needed/available without worrying about "wasting" it with only 1 or 2 bodies in the radius.

Alternately, having it target living enemies instead (same way Dark Regen works) would let you use the power at any point during combat, instead of as an "After Combat" recovery tool.

They half-fixed it some time ago. Pets won't go on the slick while it's burning, but they no longer run any farther than the edge and aren't bothered by the spot afterward.

Oathbound's right. We don't have a Dark Affinity, we have a /Dark Miasma with 2 less powers. At least, Soul Absorption and Fade are very good mules...

I've made a illu/dark i wanted since I begin to play CoH, and I'm very disappointed. It's so dull. I always forget the SA and Fade, bc, honestly I don't see when. There's on so long recharge timer, that not using them at their best efficacity is just wasting them.

I've played Earth / DA, Fire / DA, Ice / DA, Illusion / DA, Mind / DA and Plant / DA, for more than 100hrs, and I can say that I perform the same with or without SA and Fade, in solo, small group, full group, or I-trial.

I really don't understand why the devs won't admit they've made a mistake and take the time to fix it. Since we're on beta it could be changed fast. And no, DA is *not* fantastic. Dark Miasma w/out FS and PG is.

General forum consensus seems to think that it'll either go live on the 6th, or the 13th, since those are the two patch days left between now and 2XP weekend...

I'm inclined to think that if it goes live one of those days, it'll be the 13th. There are still many powerset changes that have happened internally that haven't made it to the beta build yet.

More seriously I totally feel the same about D/D Controller or Dom. A Dom with heavy -ToHit debuff and a self heal?! VERY tempting.

Yes it actually fluffy that is tempting me to controller. Umbral beast, haunts and fluffy too tempting!

Dark defenders have been my favourite since I started playing one. I don't think I've had as much fun on a toon as I have on my dark/dp defender.

I went through and made a rough draft for myself of the powers and at what level I'll get them for a dark/dark/fire troller, trying to see how the powers would mesh together.

I haven't played it on Beta, but I think it's going to be more of a hands on, in the middle of things controller.

The description of the powers shows fearsome stare - what was it replaced with when it was removed?

Fade replaced Fearsome Stare, because that power was ported over to Darkness Control. Petrifying Gaze was replaced with Soul Absorption.
