Calling all Voice Actors, now announcing auditions for 'City of Heroes: Shining Stars'

Good Day all. We have begun work to produce an ongoing machinima series based around the characters of the Shining Stars arcs. That’s right, we want to bring Twinshot, Dillo and all the rest to life in an ongoing series. With the help of the awesome Mr Mechanic, we are now prepared to begin the series work in producing the promo episode. There is a reason this is the promo episode and not a full episode, it’s job will be establish the core characters (IE: Twinshot, Dillo, Proton, and FlameBeuax) and to generate interest in the series. We are hopeful that that interest will get more people to work on the series with us.

So why are we posting this here? Simple. We're putting a call out for those interested in lending their voices to the series. That’s right, we are going to give you a chance to convince us that you have the voice to give TwinShot, and the other members of the Shining Stars, life on the screen.

How Do I audition?
Simple. Send me (Torroes Prime) a PM telling me what part(s) you wish to audition for. In response I will send you a section of the script for that deal with your desired characters to read and study. From there, pick a time (listed below) to audition.

We will be conducting auditions via TeamSpeak VOIP services so you will need to have TeamSpeak installed and set up prior to your audition. Obviously you will also need a microphone and speakers or head set as well.

Who can I audition for?
Even though this is only a promo-episode, and this is intended to be shorter than a full episode, there are still several characters that need voicing. Most of these characters are recurring characters in the series such as Flamebeaux and Twinshot. In those cases, you will be auditioning for the characters roll and we will be expecting you to commit to the series proper should you pass your audition. There are also a couple bit parts that while they may reappear later in the series are not intended to be regular characters. People who audition for these parts may also be contacted to provide extra voices for scenes on an as-needed basis.

Regular Characters
TwinShot: The spunky founding member of the Shining Stars

FlameBeaux:… what can I say? I need someone to voice FlameBeaux.

Proton: The Science officer of the Shining Stars.

Dillo: *Hoorb* Yep that little ball of joy is in here too.

Bit parts
“Hero”: TwinShot approaches him and asks him to join the Shining Stars. He says’ no in a way indicating that she’s not heroic enough or strong enough to be a real hero.

Registrar: The Super groups registrar.

With the bit parts, while they are intended to be male roles I see no reason in requiring them to be. So if we have a woman that we really like the voice of for the registrar, we’ll put a woman behind the desk. Likewise for the ‘Hero’.

When will auditions be held?
We will be holding 2 audition times. The first will be Friday, the 3rd of February at Noon EST, while the second will be Saturday, the 4th at 4pm est.

How do I audition?
Send me a PM. Because this is being handled online, I will need several pieces of info in that PM. I will outline what they are:
1) Which audition time you can make.
2) You’re Screen name you will use on TeamSpeak.
3) Whether you’re a guy or a girl (Need to know who I’m calling up to read for what parts)
4) If there is a particular part you want to read for.
In response I will send you the log in info for the TeamSpeak server.

How with the Auditions be handled?
Ever audition for a play? Same idea, except through TeamSpeak. Myself and possibly the lead writer, Mr Mechanic, will be present to conduct the auditions. Everyone will be present at the given time slot and we will call one to three people out to read a selection. For instance:

Lets say LaDyJaY, VixtorViksen, Trixie, MegaThor, Asteroth and Loki come to audition. We may call LaDyJay to read for TwinShot, Trixie to read for FlameBeuax, and MegaThor to read for the SuperGroup Registrar. We will inform them of the particular passage to read and they will go through the scene acting as they see fit. Mr Mechanic and I will make notes on the performance and the individuals. We may ask individuals to make repeat performances or ask them to read for a different character.

So, who's interested? If you have any questions toss 'em up here and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I'll try my hand at Flamebeaux. She's a spunky character. Count me in.

Torroes, while I applaud the whole idea and what not... you do realize it's against the rules to post on multiple forums right? It's considered spam.

I so wish I had a working mic or I'd totally audition. But wait, what about Grym?

I've done voice work for Anime Midstream as the villain Belzeb. I also provide the voices for about two-thirds of the monsters featured in the series.

this promo episode takes place prior to the in-game arcs and thus before Grym joins the group. So the downside: No, no Grym in the promo. The up side: We will get to see his introduction in the series itself.

Ironically it's also against forum rules to point out something is against forum rules...Yes I realize that makes my post against forum rules...

He posted in 4 relevant forums usually they allow 2-3 and they allow cross posting with prior permission from a Mod. I would just PM Z or Beastyle and get permission.

Also sent you a PM Torroes.

I for one am looking forward to seeing this. I think that the Shining Stars are the most interesting characters so far in CoH and think this should be fun.

But I can't act in the slightest

Well, just keep an eye out on the forums Dug. I've gotten a fair number of responses from people interested in auditioning so following the auditions themselves, with a little luck and a fair amount of effort, should only be 1-2 weeks to produce the promo episode. And with so many people auditioning I'm hopeful I'll be able to find the bulk of the actors I need for the ongoing series right off the bat.

...I'm gonna have to study on Dillo, see if I can come up with a voice. Voices of NPC's was one of my favorite things to do back in the D&D days. My throat still feels the hurt I put on it doing Shadow Dragon voice

36 level 50's in various servers...haven't been here in a while. It's now over 50

er... not need people hurting themselves in the process. If you can get over that little problem by all means audition.

To keep momentum going on this, I have a question. What is the desired goal if you can get everyone you need to roll with this?

Weekly/monthly/or other, episodes?

What would be the (currently planned) approximate running time of each episode?

What kind of schedule/requirements will be expected of the cast and crew (deadlines, seperate or team scheduled script reads, etc.)?

Finally, how soon would you like to go into full production with it, again assuming you can get everything you need to roll? Basically, do you have scripts ready to go, etc.?

"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.

Not sure what you're asking for here.

Ultimately I would like to get 2 episodes out a month excepting November through December. I expect people are goign to busy the entire month of December so no episodes then and probably one get one out in November. But due to the start up we're probably going to be starting in the middle of the month of April for the series proper.

10-12 minutes each.

Following the promo episode and the establishment of the entire first season's run of episodes I would like to have a 1 month turn around. Story and scripting will happen during week one, Any additional casting for extras and such during week 2, rehersals and voice recording starting in week 2 and finishing by the end of week 3 and finally demo editing and video editing during week four.

We're working on the promo episode and I would like to make it as difficult as possible so we can hammer out the problems upfront. Basically, while the promo episode is intend to be half as long as a full episode I fully expect it to take twice as long as a full episode should take. With that being said, I want to have the Promo Episode done and available for viewing by the 2nd week of March. And then be in full production for the series by the end of April.

Oh, that was just the opening preamble to the questions you answered (I guess I ambled too far with it )

Anyway, the plan sounds good! Looking forward to the auditions and seeing how it all plays out!

I've spent years studying project management as it applies to TV productions. Good to know the time seems to be well spent.

Heh, this reminds me of the time Dr. Zeus was doing some kind of short animated movie and asked for voice actors. He picked me for Captain Mako and I know he picked Lady Athena for... Something. Ghost Widow, I think. Don't know about the others. Pity nothing came of that that I know of.

I might toss my hat in. Do you have a role for someone with a thick, Russian-ish European accent?

There is no character in the promo episode that I would point to and say "They should have a thick, russian-ish accent". However, I'm also not interested in casting people based on gimmicks. I want to cast people who can honestly portray a character. In short, lets say you come to read for a part and your rendition just screams Proton to me, I'll offer you the part for Proton. If you have a Russian-ish accent, fine. We'll say Proton grew up in Siberia or something.

I'm not trying to sell a gimmick here, that's just how I speak. It's insidiously difficulty for a foreign speaker to ever nail a native pronunciation for everything. It's easy to fake in a written medium because grammar, spelling, sentence structure and so forth are a form of knowledge that can be learned, whereas speech is a skill that needs to be trained.

I'll do what I can to be present

Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that. I was just saying I'm not interested in casting someone because they have a particular accent. Most people imagine Flamebeaux as having a bit of a Northern Cali accent. if I happen to have someone who I think absolutely nails the "character" but has a German accent, okay so FlameBeuax will have a German Accent. But I'm not interested in casting that person because they have a German Accent.
I want people who can genuinely have fun playing the character(s).

Just toss me a PM with your email address in it and I'll toss you the script for the Promo episode and the login info for the Team Speak server I'm using.
