Leading to 100 more years of laughing at how stupid those 'experts' were in our time.
Playing along though;
This age coming to an end will witness the merging of the multiverse, consolidating back to the standard 11 alternate Earths. This dimensional reseting removes the thousands of nearly identical parrallell Earths, thereby matrix style downloading all the knowledge acquired by the other you's into your subconcious.
This merging also frees the Mana pool, to once more flow freely. The 1st time in nearly 3000 years. Giving those humans that have evolved enough, control over various elements.
The ensuing emergence of 'mutants' will see a real life X-men Normals Vs Magi battle ensue amongst humanity. Those that can control the Mana stream naturally and those that attempt to do so with technology to even the gap.

But the Mayans also apparently believed that time was cyclical so in effect they generally expected time to restart back to its first era. To put it in modern Gregorian calendar terms it's like going from the December of one year to the January of the next.
I think the only reason anyone ever believed that December 2012 would be the "end of time" according to the Mayan calendar is that it's a fun thing to get all the paranoid people riled up about.
