Computer won't turn on
Windows 8 brings out my inner rage.
It's the OS that says "you're too dumb to use a computer, so we're going to make you spend $1000 for a tablet without a touch screen". ...sigh... |
They've basically regressed the computer interface to a Tivo. Kinda of meh-okay if all you're doing is CONSUMING things. Absolute donkey if you're actually trying to DO things with the system.
I have the same problems with Office and the idiot "ribbon" interface. Let's just get rid of a comprehensive menu system where you can find ANYTHING and distill it down into a dumb, undescriptive, unhelpful interface of a few buttons!

Windows 8 is going to take that one step further by makng the entire "simplified" screen into an obsessively rearranged menu, to make sure you can't find anything ever again. That's where my inner rage comes out.

I do not want to have to visit page 6 of my apps to launch CoH because the night before I happened to run Windows Update and patch a few games up to date.
P.S. This is not a Mac vs PC thing - I have complaints about the Dock getting in the way on my Mac too, but I personally find somebody moving my stuff without asking to be higher on the annoyance scale. And I want them to fixitfixitfixit!!!

You know Windows 7's obsessive need to rearrange the desktop, and re-shuffle the Start menu so that you can't use either without problems, forced me to cram icons for everything into the tiny quick launch in the task bar?
|
Also, the only thing the start menu should be doing is alphabetizing your apps. Something I used to have to manually make it do. I'm just peeved about how they added extra layers of crap (yes, crap) to the Control Panel. Now we have to have irrelevant "sections" in the control panel instead of nice, tightly defined control launchers. And the network center...

Oh, but you're "Just not the market segment Apple is aiming for".

TBH, I can't stand the Mac interface.

Voodoo, sorry to hear of your computer troubles, especially on a holiday.
Coincidentally, I had the same problem a few days ago on my computer. It refused to do anything when I pressed the startup button -- no lights, no sound, nothing. I did the usual things: pressed it again, checked the cable connection, checked the power supply switch on the back of the computer, and then disconnected everything and opened the case to see if I could see something disconnected or smoldering. Nothing seemed out of place. I went ahead and dusted while I had it opened and tried it again. Lo and behold, it started!
I have no idea what I did to make it work again. It seems unlikely that merely dusting inside fixed it. Maybe it was disconnecting and reconnecting everything that did it. Anyway, give it try and maybe you can have a back-up computer.
Good luck and enjoy the new system!

That's fine if you have either of those... I don't think we need to have our pc's look and run like a big smart phone. The guy and that video.... maybe it's me, but he comes off as very condescending, like "we know what you need yes we do... and what is good for you, so eat this" I do like windows 7 but from what I have seen of 8 not so much...

All the Windows 8 stuff i've seen so far...

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
Initially Windows 7 kept trying to do all sorts of things for me and "organize" things that didn't need organizing and prompt for things that didn't need prompting. i don't recall all the changes i made at this point, but it was several hours of looking up ways to change settings and disable unnecessary cruft. Now it works just fine for me. Does what i want it to do and doesn't do the things i don't want it to do. Mostly. There are occasional exceptions that crop up.

so what's next? Windows 9... no computer parts at all, they inject it into your head!!!

I agree... in fact not a big fan of having to buy a touchscreen so this metro interface can run the way it's meant too... I like my NON touchscreen monitor and my mouse and keyboard... call me old fashion but if I want a tablet i'll go get one... O_o

People like to be able to rest their arm on a surface to use a computer for a long period of time, which is why a mouse works so well. Unfortunately, putting a touch screen monitor flat on a desk will give you neck pain.
One day we'll have some sort of vertical 3D interface where you interact with it on the desk surface, but you don't have to look down to see what you're doing...

By the way, set up another account for my mom to use on my computer a while back, and it won't let her delete desktop shortcuts to my games because of "insufficient" permission - is there a way around that, (I've set UAC to never notify) or is it a permanent feature of "User Access Censorship"?

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
Probably the thing that annoyed me the most about XP was the wizards I could never find the off switch for that kept offering to "clean up my desktop" :/

Steve Jobs said he didn't like desktops with touch screens because it's too painful to use it (literally). The thing is, he was *right*. I tried propping up my iPad and tapping it like it's a monitor once, and my arm and shoulder were hurting within minutes.

Actually the whole "gorilla arm" issue was known well before Jobs.
Windows 7's 'rearrange desktop' feature isn't enabled by default last time I checked, and certainly isn't unique - I am positive that XP and Vista did this if people wanted it to. Just disable that feature - I don't know anyone who uses it anyway.
Just right click your desktop, go to View, and make sure Auto Arrange Icons is not checked. That's it. I use Align to Grid though.

Anyways what you'll want to do is move your shortcuts out of "all users" desktop and into your accounts desktop.

Ah cool, you found something I have never seen on any computer that uses Windows 7 then. Every update turns auto arrange on eh? That's hilarious.
...matter of fact I just glanced for about half a minute using a Google search and I haven't found anyone else that has it always turn Auto Arrange back on so far every time there is an update.
You might be the only human that has that issue.

I can also confirm this is definitely NOT the norm. You might want to expand the blame for this beyond Windows... like maybe a rootkit or something else weird going on, but in all the Win7 machines I've been working on (gettin' to be about 100 in my operations now) none of them do this 'auto arrange' reset. They stay like they're supposed to.

It may be "middleware" (aka crapware) installed by the PC manufacturer/vendor.
It has something to do with the ATI video driver (it's really cranky with a HD 6850). Whenever I install a new one the desktop arrangement resets. Often Windows updates do the same thing.
I don't even make a big deal of it anymore, I just shrug and deal with it.
