Can Green Lantern Eat A Bagel...

Okay, the thread title is a bit of a joke (but I promised my friends that this is what I'd name it)...
The real question is... Is there any precedence of a power ring's energy being ingested? If so, did it provide sustenance?

It is a completely silly premise, but... While I was at a wedding over the weekend, a conversation turned into explaining the Green Lantern's powers to someone who wasn't familiar... To which she asked if he could make a bagel and eat it... And, amidst the laughing, none of us could say with certainty one way or the other!

Of course, precedence is king in the comic-book world, so that's my first question... beyond that... I can't say whether or not the residual energy from a power ring construct could give off the same beneficial properties as an item of food (or if it could avoid giving terrible atom-smashing negative results).

So, could the Green Lantern create a bagel construct that could be eaten/ingested? Could it be digested/supply sustenance? Would it be harmful?
Ridiculous minds want to know!

I don't know of it ever happening in the comics, but I think he could do it.

The ring deals with the lack of oxygen for them to breathe in space, which is one of the substances the body needs to survive. It's not much of a step to assume it can provide more life support than that.

Making a bagel and eating it would just be an indirect form of life support, much like a Lantern insisting on using the ring to make a space suit to survive in space. Different form, but standard function.

During the Syndicate Rules arc of JLA, Power Ring, Green Lantern's doppleganger, created popcorn for his team and they ate it. It's the first example that comes to mind.

Gut reaction? Yes, he probably could, but I doubt it would actually provide any sort of nutritional benefit. I'm not even sure how it would taste...

All of your replies were the same gut reaction I was having (while some were saying "no", my gut was basically saying "where there's a will...").

Well if GL rings can synthesize breathable air and transmute matter I don't see why food constructs couldn't provide nutrition. And I think in that arc I mentioned above, Power Ring said it didn't have a taste but one of the other members of his team said it had an electrical pop to it.

I'm hunting for those panels now, haha...
TV Tropes has a bit about it in "Pass The Popcorn" trope (under examples: comicbook):

Quote:
In the JLA vs. the Crime Syndicate of Amerika arc of JLA, the Justice League's evil counterparts from a Mirror Universe (the Crime Syndicate of Amerika) end up in the "good" universe while the Justice League takes on the Void Hound, a mechanical creature easily capable of destroying planets. True to form, instead of helping out, they relax in comfortable chairs provided by the Power Ring (the alternate universe's Green Lantern) and eat popcorn... also provided by the Power Ring. As he says, "It's kind of tasteless, but hey, it's lo-cal."

The question is, would it all vanish from their stomachs when he stops focusing?

Remember, digestion takes a while, so even if it was edible, it's still have to be focused on long enough to go into the digestive tract.

Actually there is a better precendent than that. In one of the comics Guy Gardner is being disaplined for a action he took while on a unautherized vacation, and is sent to help reinforce the barrier of GL's that keep the sun eater in check. While there he many not eat, sleep, communicate with others, or head the the restrooms. Sallek tells him that the ring will tend to all his physical needs for the duration of his punishment. Forget what trade paperback I read that in but there you go.

Actually, it was in the Revenge of the Green Lanterns trade of Johns' GL run, and Guy was being punished for telling Hal his mission into the Unknown Sectors was authorized and going with him. I remembered this while I was in the shower but I went to dinner with my family before I could post it.

*EDIT*

Oh, and it wasn't to keep the sun-eater in check. It was Prime Duty, where dozens of GLs are assigned to watch over Superboy Prime as he's contained in a red sun-eater.

My only familiarity with GL comes from animated shows...

Thinking about this question, I realized that anything the ring constructs is still attached to the ring via a strand of energy.

That might just be for the visual representation of the rings power, and in the comics he can create objects that aren't tethered to the ring, that I'm unsure about.
I'm sure somone knows the answer to that.

If it is always attached to the ring though...

Also, just an observation. From that panel with the popcorn, are we sure he manifested the popcorn and isn't just passing some real popcorn they had via the ring?

It's a bit more complex than yes or no...

The answer is that the Ring can produce any substance (just tinted green) for various lengths of time...some constructs are preprogramed to hold, but most have limited distance away from the creator or for a given time.

So you could eat and metabolize things made from the power ring as it would be the real product... the problem is that it is a construct that isn't made to hold and most people wouldn't keep concentration of eaten food so... it depends on the GL how digested it gets, but they could do it.

I think a more awkward question is "could a power ring eat a bagel" and im pretty sure the answer is yes yet we've never seen it do it.

It isn't always attached to the ring in the DCAU either.

I believe in one episode of JLU, Green Lantern created a construct that bore a passing resemblance to himself and sent it off for the bad guys to chase. No tether.

And in the Brightest Day episode of Superman TAS, Kyle gives Sinestro his ring but it's just a construct that explodes on his hand. No tether. linkage

Another thing to add is Sinestro's daughter Soranik Natu is a surgeon and uses her ring to save lives. Shes able to make complex medical devices and I have seen IV bags, so there is some form of a liquid she makes up to keep people alive.

Even though Allan Scott (Green Lantern 1) gets his power for his ring from the Star heart he has assisted Dr. Midnight with surgery's as well, and again I would assume that would require IV/some sort of blood for transfusions.
