At least to your OP: I saw it too, and have seen them laying the seeds of this for a long time. Watch for Hero-1 to step up into Statesman's shoes, IMO.
Am I disappointed in the reveal? Sorta, but I can see why they chose to reveal it. Sometimes the drama isn't about the death; it's about the path leading to that death. There've been plenty of death reveals in the past in literature (classical, modern, comic book, etc) that follow this same route.
Personally, I would've kept it secret.
Then again, I've been wanting to write a fan fiction/AE series called "The Death of Atlas". Again, it's not about the destination, it's about the journey.

I'm fairly suprised that There were no post about the announcment of the demise of the icon of CoH. I saw it coming and am not suprised in the least.
