Help me make my Ice/Ice Tanker slicker?

I have an Ice/Ice Tanker at level 48, haven't played her since before inherent Stamina went in, and I want to respec her to take advantage of the changes. However, I'm having the problem that I run out of slots before I get everything set up the way I want.

I have kind of a blind spot in slotting; I tend to want to six-slot everything. I find it hard to think in terms of not using entire sets. This works okay for builds that have slots to spare, but I'm having a hard time with this build so I'd appreciate if folks could give me some ideas.

The powers in the build are the ones I want, though if anyone can convince me some given power is really lame I wouldn't mind swapping Afterburner in for something just because I've never had the chance to try it yet. I'd like to come as close as I can to capping her Smashing/Lethal and Energy/Negative defenses.

I'd really appreciate suggestions. Thanks.

I did the slots ya cld expect to fill for a decent build. Works better with enhancements in them rather than me imagining but I have an Ice/Ice so I shouldn't be too bad.

Taking Tough/Weave makes softcapping s/l/e/n defense trivial for Ice Armor and allows you to go for other bonuses. That being said, here's a build that will softcap with one foe from EA.

Ironically enough ... Ice/Ice doesn't get all THAT much return on investment from picking up Hasten (let alone Burnout) in my personal opinion. And a lot of people will tell you to grab Tough and Weave, but my personal preference is to go for the Leadership Pool (team oriented) rather than the Fighting Pool (selfish sufficiency oriented). That's because if even TWO people on the team have Maneuvers ... then EVERYONE on the team effectively has Weave (ie. 2 Maneuvers = 1 Weave) ... and if you're 1 of those 2, then you only need 1 more rather than 2 more people with Maneuvers, which actually happens more often than you'd think.

In my opinion Ice armor is one of the best sets in the game. Which to me is surprising that you don't see Ice as one of the more popular sets. 100% slow resistance/recharge time resistance. So easy to soft cap for trials. I'll take it!

There are three reasons it's not more popular:

1) The graphics distract a lot of people. Even with customization, it can block out a large portion of your costume.

2) For a long, long time there were problems with the set, and it still carries a lot of that stigma around, even though they've been gone for a lot longer than the problems existed.

3) It's a fairly standard set. It's good, but isn't overly defensive, and not overly offensive. It's pretty ruch right in the middle of all of the Tanker sets. So unless that's what you're looking for, any other set is going to give you either more offense or more defense.

Have a fire/ice tanker (now retired for various reasons), but consider slotting up frost with 3 dmg/range HOs + frankenslotting IOs. You can nail a surprising amount of enemies with that cone maxed out since the angle is so wide. It's the one thing I miss since I've switched to MA.

  • Detonation - Accuracy/Damage/Endurance: Level 50
  • Detonation - Damage/Endurance/Range: Level 50
  • Positron's Blast - Damage/Range: Level 50
  • Positron's Blast - Accuracy/Damage/Endurance: Level 50
  • Mocking Beratement - Taunt/Recharge/Range: Level 50
  • Perfect Zinger - Taunt/Recharge/Range: Level 50

Detonation
(Frost)
  • MezResist(Sleep) 1.65%
Positron's Blast
(Frost)
  • 2.5% (0.04 End/sec) Recovery

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

The term is "self sufficiency" unless you're deliberately trying to be insulting.

If you're going to tout the team benefits of Maneuvers, I think something needs to be said about the much greater efficiency and effectiveness of Weave. It may not benefit your team directly, but Weave provides more than twice the defense (5.0% base vs. 2.275%) to tankers at a lower endurance cost (.32 EPS vs .39 EPS). I think it's arguable that having a tank that can soft-cap defense is often more beneficial to the team than adding 3% defense to other team members.

In addition, since Weave will put a Ice tank much closer to the soft-cap than Maneuvers, it requires less expenditure on IOs for set bonuses to soft-cap S/L/E/NE. The cost differential won't be significant for many players, but it certainly will be for some.

Whats a good ST damage secondary outside of SS for an Ice Tanker?
Anyone tried Ice/STJ yet?

Basically any except EM because I hate EM nowadays
And well Battle Axe is like a worse version of Mace for me.

But BA and WM are kinda AoE-ish so scrap that.

I'd say DM for ZOMG survivability because of Siphon Life

StJ looks good like it does for any AT, like KM (well KM is not so hot on Brutes) - I don't see a disadvantage in StJ for Tankers compared to scrappers (except for the basic, crits and higher damage). With KM you'll have power siphon less often than a scrapper because CS won't have a chance to refresh PS.

I really like the MA version for tankers since Storm kicks gives +10% def to all, that's why I have a SD/MA, at level 4 she was with 25% def to all positions and after 22 (SOs, Phalanx Fighting, CJ) she had about 41% with one Storm Kick. With her my plan is to get to 49% melee at least to be incarnate sofcapped with SK, plenty doable on an Ice Tanker too (49% to s/l/e/n looks easy with IOs).

But the melee set I'd roll with Ice (I have it on an elec brute for the same reason) is Stone Melee, since it's an end monster and Ice doesn't care. Stone Melee has so much mitigation (Fault is great, hold 4 in seismic) that it may be even more survivable than dark melee depending on the case.

I've thought about making an Ice/ tanker, and one of the 2 pairings i was leaning towards was /Stone. I've got a Stone/WP brute, and I still love the smashy feel of stone melee. Granted, on a tanker it wouldn't have the same impact, damage-wise, but the earth-shattering "KaBoom!" might still make it worth while.

Plus, i had the thought that i could still conceptually tie in /stone with /ice by using the crystal customizations and color them so that they look like ice. And who doesn't wanna clock some poor shmuck upside the head with a big friggin ice hammer? Good times....goooood times.

(the other set i'm concidering is /TW....still trying to decide between Ice/ and Elec/ for this one)

You're kind of all over the place in terms of set bonuses, though you've got enough Defense, so that should be okay.

Still, you've done some interesting slotting and power choices. As such, some suggestions:

1) Take Frozen Aura! It's the best AoE attack you have!

2) Chilling Embrace is overslotted if you've just going for the 2.5% Recharge Time bonus. You can probably drop a slot there and put it somewhere else where it'll do more good, like Spring Attack.

3) Energy Absorption is a great place to Frankenslot. Try to maximize DefBuff, Recharge, and EndDrain.

4) If you're only going to 1-slot Ice Blast, I wouldn't even bother. Take Taunt. It's not necessary, but can help you Tank AVs and GMs, and any other critters that get away from you. Gauntlet is NOT auto-hit versus the big bad guys, so having Taunt can help you tank them.

4)

when i tried frozen aura on my blast, it was awful, no acc, no dmg, even with 3 IOs Acc, i was still missing -5 minions (lots of)

was it improved somewhere ? will i hit more with the tanker version ? was thinking of removing frost, spring and ice sword to take aid other, aid self (can be useful), then frozen aura (if it's that great) with a 5 obliteration set in. (or can be taunt set with chance of psi)

The Tanker version is MUCH better than the Blaster version. Look at the power effects in Mids. The Tanker version does good damage, has normal accuracy, and can be slotted for good effect.

If you're at the soft-cap, which you are, then you shouldn't need Aid Self all that often. Hoarfrost and Hibernate should be more than enough. Definitely don't give up offensive powers to take them, especially Frost (good AoE) and Ice Sword (you'll want a ST attack chain). If you need to drop a power to fit Frozen Aura in, drop Spring Attack. Frozen Aura is a better attack by far.
