Is Pool Power Customization even on the horizon?

For some reason or another the spikey-visual-effects-around-the-feet associated with Super Speed have started giving me migraines. Idunno how long it's been going on, several months at least, maybe a year. Idunno why, maybe I'm getting old, maybe the new computer.

It's a shame, too. I find Super Speed to be such a useful power: it provides Stealth by itself which stacks with a Stealth IO, making you nearly invisible almost all the time. Nearly all my squishies have it.

So, is Pool Power Customization:

(a) Never going to be done
(b) Definitely going to be done Soon(tm) (ie, less than a year away)
(c) Definitely going to be done, but not planned as yet (ie, at least a year away)

Pretty sure only the devs know the answer to this. Also pretty sure it's not (a) since I believe they have said that it's something they want to be able to do, so either (b) or (c). I think at the moment there's just technical hurdles to it, which they may or may not currently be working on.

I wish... Lets wait for summit or I22... I think is time.
Short answer? NO

Horizon? Yes.

How close? No one knows. They know we want it, but...it's not on the 'almost here' plate.

The impression I've gotten from trying to read between the lines of dev comments is that they want to do it but it's a lot of work, and they haven't been able to devote the resources it would need yet. I'm not expecting it any time soon.

I never understood why they didn't do Pool Powers to begin with. It's only - what, 44 powers? (including Fitness) That's not even the equivalent of 5 powersets. When they did it the first time, they did every primary and secondary. That's gotta be dozens of powersets.

Most of them all fit into the same basic system. Only a handful have alternate animations.

It's my understanding that the way the game is programmed makes it difficult to allow customization of more than the primary and secondary. This may be because only those sets are locked in as part of your character and have a direct connection to it in character creation.

The ability to customize Incarnate powers is probably less of a technical hurdle since they had to design the entire Incarnate system from the ground up anyway, and you never lose the Incarnate powers you gain. Thus, they also retain a permanent connection to your character.

That's just my guess, take it for what it's worth. I expect that this is something they are going to do. However, we have no indication that it's currently a priority.

All they need to do is give Hasten a 'No FX' option, and I'll be happy.

Yeah, and even at that the customization UI for Incarnate powers is a little cludgy, forcing you to pick through every single slottable option. (Or you can just hit 'Bright' or 'Dark' for all of them and pay through the nose.) In any case, and for what little it's worth, my guess is that the devs were willing to let the UI go through in its semi-cludgy state for Incarnates because:
  • thus far, it's only three powers, with a maximum of five more on the way, and
  • Incarnate powers come very late in a character's progression.
That second point is key, I think. If the devs took a similar approach with power pools -- just throwing every single pool and every single power at you every time you entered the tailor screen after level four, new players might get turned off. Long-timers might protest that they don't care about the UI; I certainly wouldn't care -- but there is something to be said for professional pride. If you can't do something to a certain standard, you can't release it even if all your customers clamor for it.

Anyway, there is a limited workaround. If you don't mind turning off all persistent effects around your character's avatar, then you can type:
/supressclosefxdist 255
And then:
/suppressclosefx 1
It works great, IME, for natural-themed characters. For other characters, I usually just grin and bear the Hasten/etc effects that I don't like. To switch effects back on, you just change that 1 to a 0. (or disable Suppress Effects option in your Options-Graphics&Audio window)

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

Didn't the devz tone down the visual fx of superspeed once before I wanna say it was back somewhere in the single digit issues. A lot of people actually missed the old vizzie for it and the devz then reverted it back to the original. "Full Circle" rears it's ugly head again...LOL.

Edit: If the devz ever DO a power customization for pools, and assuming it's still in the still in the past data somewhere (proooobably not)...the toned down and original fx could be the options (along with a no fx for those that would want it...........weirdos......)

The issue seems to be setting the UI up to handle the pools/APP/PPP

Personally I think they should simply have a horizontal slide bar at the top that lets you cycle through each pool power with the typical vertical list of each power. That way you only have one or two powersets on the screen at a time and the UI isn't cluttered.

Of course I have no idea how difficult such a simple sounding idea would be to implement.

Doesn't seem like this would be all THAT much work. Look at the pools, there are only a handful of skills that would even require any kind of animation/particle/effect work.

Fitness is all passive - Nothing you COULD do, even if you wanted.
Fighting - None of this powers come with any meaningful particle effects. Nothing to change. I suppose they could stick a different animation into Punch/Kick, but there's no point.
Leadership - No FX option for the tiny amount of effects that even exist. Minimal work.
Teleport - Nothing here could feasibly be improved with changing.
Flight - They already have different flight poses...what else COULD there be? Different animation for Air Superiority?
Concealment - No visual improvements to make here
Leaping - The jump kick animation is terribad, that could use an option. Maybe lift something out of Martial Arts?
Presence - Nothing to change.
Medicine - Ah, now we're getting somewhere. A non-tech version of the little fixer widget would be nice, for those who aren't playing mad scientists or robots. The animation wouldn't even need much changing, just the model of the thing you carry in your hand. Wand, medicine stick, tech remote, organic healing blob, whatever.
Speed - Ability to turn off the big golden glow on Hasten/SS

So that's only what, like 10 powers at most?

I suppose they could stick a different animation into Punch/Kick, but there's no point. - Some people may want to be able to change the FX to match their powersets, so it could have an additional add FX option.
Teleport - Nothing here could feasibly be improved with changing. - Alternate Animations would be desired here, especially Tech Versions.
Flight - They already have different flight poses...what else COULD there be? Different animation for Air Superiority? - The flight poses are clunky to use, having them as genuine alternate animations would be preferable.

I would also want to be able to tint or disable the FX on Combat Jumping. Kind of annoying when I have a "no FX" character who still glows yellow because of CJ.

In practice, for various reasons, with various excuses, the answer is A.

Alternatively, the answer is C if your estimated time is roughly five to seven years from now.

They know it's wanted, the most we can do is give them gentle reminders now and than that we still do want it, and hope for the best. They've done a decent job of implementing things the playerbase wants, it just tends to take longer than we'd like.

Dear devs,

Awesome Blossom is a plant/nrg force of good, spreading her planty goodness and arresting the bad guys with her stored up sunshine. This makes her happy. She wants to take powers from the energy APP, but knows they will be blue. This makes her sad. Please make Awesome Blossom happy again.

Please!!! That actually goes for most of these pool powers... I don't care about customizing them, just allow a no Fx option on all of them!
