New Log-In Screen Music

I was curious about who did it. Something about the style made me think it was done by our own Ominous Voice (the guy behind this, this, and this awesomeness among others), but I wasn't sure if that was who it was or if Paragon Studios did it on their own.

Either way, it's pretty awesome.

It reminds me of Michael Keaton-Batman era Danny Elfman.

The composer is Jason Graves. Jason also created the soundtrack for City of Heroes Going Rogue.

Did he also do the new music used for the different areas of Atlas Park?

I believe he composed most, if not all, of the new music you're hearing in Freedom.

I hope you use him again for any other new music requirements in the future - his style fits the game very well.

Huh. Kinda surprised those were all from the same person, since I like most of the new stuff but can't stand the new menu music.

Is this new music available on the site somewhere? I know I have a copy of the old old stuff...

What's wrong with it? It sounds nice and heroic and epic - it make's logging in seem even more awesome

The new log in theme for CoH can only remind me of the Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan Main Theme

Weird, but one of my favorite things about Going Rogue was the music. It's epic! Mr. Graves did a fantastic job.

On a related note, can someone tell me where I might find the cue that plays at the end of the Dr. Kane's Haunted House trial? I'm sure I've heard it before, and it might even be up on the wiki page already, but where?

It's part of the Going Rogue theme music - you should hear it when you choose to make a Praetorian.

In isolation, there's nothing really wrong with it. It's a nice enough piece of music. The problem is that, on the one hand, it sounds too..... I can't quite put my finger on it, but 'generic' is almost but not quite the right word. It just doesn't 'grab' me. Plus, as someone who I can't remember put it back on the beta forums, it sounds like something that escaped from a star trek movie. It just doesn't feel like it fits, to me, even though there's not really anything wrong with it simply as a piece of music.

Combined with that is the fact that, to me, the old hero fanfare *did* have that epic quality that just grabbed me and made me feel all pumped up to go save the world. It had more character, and I liked it a lot.

In other words, it's not because the new music is *bad*, it's because the old music was so much *better*, at least to me. Thankfully there are ways to to deal with such things, even if we're not allowed to discuss the methods here.

Found it - from about the 2:30 to 3:15 mark (which means you'd have to leave the GR login screen open for a while to hear it, back when we had a separate one). Thanks.

The new music is okay, kind of generic but okay.... but I kind of miss the old. I especially miss the old CoV theme.

Cool deal. I like it, kinda makes me think of Justice League/JL: Unlimited.

Not sure if you would consider that compliment or not since that's a different game made by someone else, but I find it cool.

Actually, parts of it remind me more of the opening theme to the 2009 Star Trek.

I agree with this. Although a part of me, probably the 7 year vet part, misses the old music too. Love the new stuff though.

I was surprised to hear the new opening theme for a really weird reason. About a year and a half ago (6 months after I'd started playing), one of my characters exited a mission--a turning point in an epic story arc--onto a ledge overlooking the devastation of Eastgate at sunset. Suddenly, music leaped into my head, a fairly epic composition of my own imagining (not a regular occurrence in my case). The music stuck in my brain, and became a kind of "theme song" for that character and a few others. I couldn't help it: during important moments, like a big reveal in a story arc, I'd imagine hearing it.

Until Issue 21, when I didn't have to imagine. Now, don't get me wrong, it's not the exact same score. There's a dramatic, high pitched crescendo in my imaginary theme that lends a "things just got really serious" tone, and differs significantly. The Jason Graves theme is so incredibly close, but his crescendo is more "Yes, THIS is your AWESOME CHARACTER ROSTER" (if you time it just right). Still, I had to pick my jaw up off the keyboard when I heard it for the first time. It's like my musical theme's interdimensional doppelganger just showed up with Issue 21.

I've been wanting to tell someone that. Seemed like the right thread.

Also, nice name there. Off-topic but, Energy Man was the first name of Captain-Electric when I created the character on paper for the first time as a child, 25 years ago.

I thought as much. I love Graves work on the GR soundtrack. But with regards to the new login, as nice a piece as it is, it just doesn't say 'superheroes' to me. Specifically, it doesn't say 'City of Heroes' to me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but whenever I think of superheroes they each have a signature melodic hook. Superman has John Williams' legendary theme. Batman has Danny Elfman's or Shirley Walkers melodies. Spider-Man has his "Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can". Their music is as much a part of them as their costume or their powers. Right now, I don't feel that CoH has a musical identity yet.

The closest CoH has to a signature tune is the Atlas Park fanfare, which is what I built upon when making this. It's actually a very good melody; simple iconic and most importantly very CoH.

If Graves has the opportunity to revisit the login theme in the future I'd like to see him build the piece around the AP fanfare. As a professional composer I'm sure he'd do a far better job than I ever could.
