I love Street Justice!

After listening to so many people complain how expensive the set is, or what numbers it has or what AoE it has and whatever else I missed out on in the last few days, I kind of felt compelled to write a good thing or two about Street Justice. Let me just say that on its own:

I LOVE Street Justice!

I honestly couldn't tell you what it is about the set that gets to me so much. In part, it just looks damn awesome, better than I remember a new set looking in YEARS, but that's not all there is to it. This set actually plays well, too, or at least plays in a way that really motivates me to want to play it. See, most of the time when I play a set, be it new or old, I kind of go through the motions. I know what I'm supposed to do and I'm just shooting for DPS or whatever stat is meaningful at the time. Not with Street Justice. With this one, I have a few attacks that I instinctively sort of WANT to do. It's not really about damage or about utility, or even about looks. Something about some of these attacks just "feels" right.

Now, granted, my one Street Justice Scrapper is only just now reaching level 30, so I don't even have the whole set, but even so, I already have my favourites. I love Spinning Strike both because of its backhand swing, and also because it's just a damn potent power. I love Rib Cracker because it looks so painful and because I kind of learned to rely on it. I even like Shin Breaker, the one attack which looked the most out of place as a heavy damage dealer (especially against things with no legs, like Spectral Demons), I love as it's the PERFECT attack to use on an enemy you just knocked down. I've always wanted a sort of "stomp on downed enemy" attack in City of Heroes and this is essentially it. Score!

The set is damn stylish, but I don't think it suffers in performance, at least not from my experience. I know much was said about its damage numbers and AoE and whatnot, but in my hands, it does about as well as any other set I've tried. Oh, sure, I haven't tested it against Pylons, largely because I don't get ambushed by Pylons in my missions very often, but I'm really not sure how much I'd care about those results one way or the other. The bottom line is the set WORKS. If anything, it's Super Reflexes letting me down, because ancient legacy has banished my AoE defence to level 35. But Street Justice? I can't get enough of the thing.

And that, really, is why I felt the set was awesome enough to talk about - because I can't get enough of it. Cards on the table: I've been playing this game for over seven years, more or less a quarter of my life. I've seen it all, I've done it all and I really haven't been able to find anything to really fire me up in this game. Sure, from time to time I'll make an amazing new concept character and "fall in love," but that's fleeting, in the long run, because I'm still playing the game like a jaded vet.

Not with Street Justice. Playing this set makes me feel like I did when I'd just picked the game up back in 2004. It's exciting, and not just the numbers or the performance or the getting new powers. The whole set itself is just fun to play. Very fun to play. I'm lucky my workplace is undergoing renovations and I'm forcibly off work, or I'd have been SO slacking off these last few days. It's weird, because when I sit down to play, I always feel reluctant. "Man, I don't want to do this any more." But as soon as I fire up the game and plant a knee on some poor schmuck's face, it's instantly the best thing I've ever played. Funny how that works.

I guess it helps that I did, actually, make a pretty cool character to top it all off, or remade, to be precise. A long time ago, I made teenage girl character who dreamt of growing up to be a hero like her parents. Originally, she used Martial Arts - little girl, so she had to be fast and fragile. That's always been kind of "done," though. So when Street Justice came out, I couldn't help but put this kind of amazing, vicious brutality in the hands of a little girl, who went around putting the hurt on big chunky mean bad guys. It's simultaneously cute and amazing to watch, and it's twice as much fun to play. I'm actually thinking of snagging powers from Fighting at some point, just to add even more hurt to the equation.

I can safely say that if that's what Freedom promises to bring in the future, then HELL YEAH I'll pay for it! If Street Justice is this awesome, I dare not try to imagine what Titanic Weapons is going to be like. Oh, my!

I hate melee.

Street Justice is a melee set.

I love Street Justice.

Therefore Street Justice is a success because it has made me love melee.

It is a little known fact that anybody who hates Street Justice also hates Pie. Me, I love pie so I know I will love Street Justice...once I get the money for it.

I love the idea of the combo system. it sounds like a much more open version of the Dual Blades combos that I also enjoy alot.

I hate Stalkers. I hate them so much. They smell.

My level 30 Street Justice/Energy Aura Stalker is THE MOST fun I've ever had with a Stalker ever. I don't feel like a Stalker, I feel like a really quiet Scrapper that gets very noisy when he shows up to fight.

Spinning Strike, knocked you down, SHIN BREAKER TO THE GROOOOIIIIIINNNN.

I strongly agree on all counts!

I will say - something feels incredibly wrong about using Rib Cracker on a female toon - but it is a fleeting sense of wrong that quickly dissipates into a craving for brownies.

Does anyone else remember the Player Versus Player comic that came with CoH Deluxe edition? And how Francis was emailing a suggestion for a 'Dirty Fighting' set, with the tier 9 power being 'Kick 'em in the Jimmies'?

Guess he got his wish

Now...C'MERE! *sounds of carnage*

OMG! I was reading that the other day... That also had the one hipster guy who kept asking for the game to be released on a Mac.

How eerie! :-)

I said this in Skype, and I'll say it here.

Crushing uppercut looks like Hurt made of Win.

First time I ever actually felt bad about what I was doing to the enemy sprites...

The feeling was washed away with Awesomesauce.

Yeah, kind of puts the Popeye Windup Punch to shame, doesn't it? Not that that's saying much, but DAMN

Hey there,

Glad to hear some positive reviews of the set. I look forward to spending some time with it as soon as I accumulate enough free points to pick it up.

A question to the folks who've played it: are there any "skippable" powers in the set? Most melee sets you can bank on one of the powers being the sort of thing that you can drop from your power choices and not feel like you're missing anything. But in Mids I wasn't seeing anything obvious in that role. Is there anything?

Mostly Pinnacle, with scattered alts on Liberty, Freedom, and Justice.

I had a great time playing with you!

Um... NO! Of course not! The set is awesome, and ever power in it is incredibly cool Well, OK, I guess you can skip Confront if you really wanted to, but you really should take everything else. Those powers are just too good to pass up. They are to me, anyway. I have them all but Crushing Uppercut, and I wouldn't give up any one of them for the world. In fact, I'm thinking of adding Kick from Fighting just to add even more brutality

I hit 47 today, and started the IO process, all but my purples are slotted, and the last 6 slots.

Let me tell you, Street Justice only gets more and more fun. I also think it is the best set in years, and I loved KM.

Yeah, Confront is the only power you'll WANT to skip Everything else is so damn awesome. I'm very sceptical of sets, even the ones I like. I'd say the Stalker variant needs a little tweaking and love to remove some clunkiness from it, but....other than that it's a flawless FATALITY!

If it bothers you, knock them down first. Then stomp on them with shin breaker. Wait till they are getting up, and knee them in the face instead of the crotch.

Every power is worth it. The more combo points you can build quickly the better.

My usual chain on my Stalker: Assassin's Strike > Shin Breaker > Crushing Uppercut > Initial Strike > Heavy Blow > Shin Breaker > Spinning Strike > Spring Attack.

Demolishes the big-bads and turns the lower ranks into mush.

I haven't played it yet (don't have the points yet) but I find the animations hilarious - looks vaguely like the martial arts version of old-timey footage of Babe Ruth running the bases.

My favorite combo for Street Justice is...

Spinning Strike (awesome animation that knocks them down), Shin Breaker (kick em while they're down), Rib Cracker (knee them in the face as they're standing back up)

I have that same jazzed feeling about Street Justice.
It seems to be a combination of the animations, the flow, the effectiveness and the combo system that creates this feel in playing Street Justice that just completely rocks!

I haven't been able to put it into words, exactly...

And I have only played it up to level 10 in Beta...
But I will be making an alt with it live soonish. It's just that I've got a few other new alts that I am a still enjoying, so I am waiting a bit.

Still... Street Justice gets as many thumbs up as I can give it. It is really fantastic!! No... not "fantastic"... it is kickass!!

My ONLY complaint about the set is the sounds- they are awful in the extreme. Beyond that, the set is amazing dipped in awesomesuce with a side order of extra awesomesauce! On a tanker I actually feel like a scrapper for damage!

Agreed 100% on all counts. Sound effects need less WHIFF and more CRUNCH. The set itself is freaking awesome.

I think the Street Justice sounds only become annoying when you have multiple of them all whiffing at enemies. Just one SJ character who tends to hit more often than not rarely gets annoying, at least to me.
