If you had common salvage selling on the market...
Thanks, good to know.
Like you perhaps (unless you're a villain), I'd rather be out busting super villains. But when you sell for 1 inf, ya'know, you're paying market fees on top of that. You're paying people to take your salvage. I put my trash up for 11 inf each to offset that cost. It'll be treasure for someone else, and at 11 inf it's still a steal. |
It also means that I free up my auction slots quicker than if I'm worried about market fees.
If anyone wants "to do the market a favor" how about getting rid of the back order of bids for Alchemical Silver? There's only about 13 thousand outstanding bids. Go ahead, even that out.

I don't think anything has ever sold for 1 inf, and even if it did, if the next thing sells for a hundred I can afford to sell the next 10 things for 1 inf. It just means that whomever buys it, will pay what they feel it is worth at the time, and not chase the price around.

I've sold trash commons for it before. I imagine it was someone flipping in hindsight, but I'm lazy.
I will reiterate though that I think the market should buy up items that are below [or significantly] below NPC vendor value. Just on the premise that there's no reason why NPCs wouldn't use the market either.

Any salvage i put on the market i generally price at 5 inf. If it's in demand i may get a million or more, if it's not i might make less than vendoring it. Either way i got rid of a piece of salvage and made badge progress on that alt.

It's crazy that you're getting so much back for listings at 5 inf! I still think I'm going to list high for items in demand. But whenever my auction, bank and inventory slots get too cluttered I'm going to go with your method. For low demand stuff I'm going to compare 1, 5, and 11 inf sales for a while and see how it goes.
Thanks again for the tips, both of you.

Crap, I just argued and agreed in the same paragraph.
Oh look at the time! I think I'm going to log in and go bust some super villains.

The reason this doesn't sit well with me is, some people here have stated they sell low on purpose in order to give good deals to crafters. NPC buyouts in the market would rob crafters of those deals. Granted, it would just mean crafters would have to pay 251 instead of 100. It wouldn't be terrible, I guess.

There is a decided advantage to not having to worry about selling the wrong thing, so there's merit to that side as well. Especially when you're talking about a pretty small value on the market [with perhaps the exception of some generic IO recipes].

Who cares what flippers are doing or not doing? They can only do what they do because people are willing to pay more for things than they should, not because people list things high.
I don't think making inf is the real reason to buy commons cheap to sell out of the market. There's better, easier ways to make it.
An interesting exercise, but the amount for sale on the market will replenish, like it always does. The stuff drops too fast to make it otherwise.
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.
Meh, I don't give a fig about the market so everything I put in there gets listed for 5 inf. And yes, that includes purple drops too (of which I get one every blue moon).

When I dump "junk" salvage for less than 100 inf, it is so that people can get the salvage they need without paying through the nose for stuff they need for crafting.
I know that I'm taking an Inf hit (I don't really care because if I'm in a hurry I'll delete it anyway), but when someone comes along and artificially raises the cost by doing what the original poster does, it annoys me. |
The thing is, when I sell stuff cheap, it's to help low level characters make some money by vendoring trash. It's exactly the same reason why I put aluminum cans next to trash cans. If someone is so desperate for money that they'll pick through the trash and haul it to a recycler/vendor, then I say good luck and God bless.
If someone actually bought that junk and crafted stuff with it, I wouldn't really mind, but that's not what I had in mind when I listed it.
On the other hand, I do have one character where I'm trying to get lots of badges. On that character, I list stuff cheap because I want the next sales badge. I don't care who buys it or why as long as it sells quickly because I have a lot more stuff to sell and not enough slots on the market.
So the problem is that Spacenut can't tell WHY people listed things for the price they did. He can't even tell who listed it. He doesn't know if he's buying it from people who want a badge and he's doing them a favor, or if he's buying it from someone who wanted to help crafters and he's annoying them. Some of both are out there and he can't pick and choose when buying.
And you don't know who bought it or why. So you can assume that he bought it and vendored it, and you can be annoyed, or you can assume that some poor lowbie crafter bought it and crafted with it and be happy. But you'll never know which it was.
The bottom line, as far as I'm concerned, is that if you sell something for 100 inf and someone buys it for 100 inf, then you don't get to complain, period.

You see the problem here? When you sell stuff cheap, it's to help crafters get cheap salvage. (Although if there are 10,000 for sale for under 500 inf each, I don't think the problem you're trying to solve actually exists, but whatever.)

I mean, who was complaining, period.?
I usually just dump all common salvage on the market for 1 inf, just so it will help toward any market badge progress. Even alts that I don't badge hunt with, all you need is 250, 1000 sales to get some extra auction house slots.
On my main badger I even took big losses by buying up some more expensive salvage and reselling it low.
Freedom Server - Main = Lil Bug & way too many alts to list
Buying below cost and vendoring is the quick & easy way I fund new alts til they can afford to start flipping. But I normally stick to uncommon & rares. 1.5 mill in commons is dedication!!
Craft your inventions in AE!!

Some interesting viewpoints out here...
A few random thoughts I'll toss out.
* I never list anything for 1, ever. I've lost 4 inf on things that way, and from a
purely psychological standpoint, it bugs me.... (the min market fee is 5).
The rule there - Never list for less than you'd be willing to accept if they
paid that exact price.
I can accept 11 for a common, but not -4
Typically, at the end of a play session, or when a toon fills up, I'll dump my common
salvage (listed for 11).
Taken in aggregate, I've *always* gotten more inf doing that, than the vendor pays.
Sure, a Silver might sell for 11, but Circuit Board might sell for 50,000 - and
just one of those beats the Vendor price of 250 each for the entire lot.
In the end, doing that keeps the Market Wheel greased, assists other players,
and still gains me a modest (but acceptable) profit for the time involved.
* From a money making standpoint, flipping salvage is about as small time as
it gets - you can make 10's of millions flipping Common Recipes in a couple hours
(see my sig guide) - salvage is lot less value for the time, even for a brand
new toon.
In fact, one stack of 10 L50 Common recipes would beat the 1.5 million earned from
the OP's entire exercise (no knock on OP if he enjoyed a few hours of market
dabbling that way).
But for pure funding? Not so much. The only time I think it can be a decent
strategy is for toons running AE missions - converting tickets to rares can be pretty
lucrative for the effort invested... Even so, converting tickets on random IO rolls
is statistically more profitable (for more effort though).
* Market effect: Virtually None. Entire groups of players have descended
upon a specific salvage niche numerous times. For a time, typically minutes,
if they focus on the task exclusively, they can sway the price, but ultimately,
Supply & Demand will re-instate itself very quickly as soon as that dedicated
effort stops. For what it's worth, that is a Good Thing.
As for supply - abundant supply of Common salvage is desirable - for crafting.
Having a floor price? Not worth the programmer effort (regardless of how little).
Why?
My first point - considered in aggregate, it already sells above Vendor Price.
If you only ever sell Kinetic Weapons or Silver, you might not get vendor price for
it, but on the other hand, if the difference between what you do get vs 250
each is *problematic* (really?) vendor it...
A floor price is a solution for a non-existent problem.
