Soft cap S/L defense

I am looking at Paragon Wiki and trying to figure this out... how are people soft capping s/l defense solely on IO's? I've seen several people claim this while having a secondary with no S/L defense...

It isn't just IOs. There's Weave and Maneuvers and, for squishies, epic shields.

5 Kinetic Combat sets = 18.75%
5 Reactive Armor sets = 6.25%
Steadfast 3%
Glad. Armor 3%

That's 31% right there. Maneuvers + Weave adds roughly 10% to that. The rest you would just have to be creative to achieve.

SG: Guadians of Paragon - VG: Paragon's Darkness
The Usual Suspects: Fimboolvetr (Icer Tank), Tsukiyomi (Mind/Psi/Ice Dom), Smiting Dragon (Dm/Sr Scrap), Widow Mortis (NW)
Up and Comers: Ameterasu (Km/Reg Scrap), Arrhymian (Elec/Nin Stalk), TDMKII (Bot/Traps MM)

Ok so correct me on this but both kinetic and reactive at the fourth slot has +smash/lethal def +2 melee def (half), wouldn't that set bonus exceed the rule of 5 or does that just pertain to the same sets? I've always tried to keep that rule in play for the bonuses because I thought otherwise I'd waste money on sets not doing anything.

No because they both offer different values. Kinetic Combat offers considerably more than Reactive Armor.

As has been said, you are missing pool powers. Weave, Maneuvers and either Stealth/Combat Jumping/Hover are all useful. With average slotting, three of those net 12.2% defense right there. If you are prepared to sacrifice Hasten (not unheard of on a set like Willpower) you can also stick in a 4th for an extra 2.9%.

Yeah, you are forgetting Weave and maneuvers. Those two powers are....useful.

Sounds to me like someone needs to work on their IOs :P

There are also 2.5%, 1.25%, and 3.13% set bonuses. As well as the 1.88% that is attached to 3.75% melee, but i try not to use that very often.

Tourettes.

That's not debt, those are my "fury bonus points"--Stahlkopf

MOST amazing Brute engineer goes to: Ultrawatt. His SS/Fire farm build is SMASH!
Congrats to Black Assassin! Won 100,000,000 INF for building most survivable NRG/NRG Blaster

Combat Jumping.
Also, The Taunt sets have 2.5 and 3.13% s/l def bonuses, the two that give recharge bonuses too. And others, like rectified reticle (1.88%). Well just go to mids - window - set bonus finder.

I'm having a hard time coming up with a primary build for my SS/Fire that caps at 45% s/l using lvl 33 and 3 -KB IOs tho while keeping decent recharge without purples - the secondary one has 105% global rech before hasten and spiritual/ageless but it only has fire def and is a farmer.

Don't forget the Tohit Buff set that can slot into Build-up/Rage along with the Immobilize set if you take Electric Fences or have another Immob type power. Both of these offer S/L Def bonuses (sorry, but I forget their names at the moment).

Example from a SS/Elec brute build I have in Mids:

Combat Jumping with 1 Luck of the Gambler (Def/Rech) = 2.17
Weave with 2 Luck of the Gamblers (Def & Def/Rech) = 5.3
Maneuvers with 2 Luck of the Gamblers (Def & Def/Rech) = 3.21
One Steadfast Protection Res/Def unique = 3
One Gladiator's Armor TP Prot/Def unique = 3
Three sets of 4 Kinetic Combats @ 3.75 each = 11.25
One set of 5 Siphon Insight (in PPP Soul Mastery -> Dark Obliteration) = 3.75
Three sets of 4 Reactive Armors @ 1.25 each = 3.75
One set of 6 Enfeebled Operation (in PPP Soul Mastery -> Soul Tentacles) @ 2.5 + 1.56 = 4.06
One set of 6 Perfect Zingers = 3.13
One set of 6 Obliterations = 1.88
One set of 6 Guassian's Synchronized Fire Control = 1.25

Total = 45.7

No rule of fives broken

This build isn't live, but I have a similar Elec/SM Tanker build (no EPP/PPP) which is live with 45.2

Current primary characters, all on Guardian:
The Amber Fist (Elec/Stone Tanker) | Pixelbeater (Fire/Kin Corr) | The Sequencer (Bots/Traps MM)
Blakkat (Claws/Dark Brute) | Mhogus'thra (Ill/Dark Cont) | Wyldhunt (Beast/Dark MM)
