Looking for something new

Looking for something new to try out since I've come back to the game again. Haven't played since around Issue 18, before that I played until Issue 10 from launch. Looking for something that can take damage, be it shields or heavy regen, and something that can deal it as well.

I'm playing with a few friends right now that are on free accounts, a DP/Kin Corr and a Emp/Dark Def. I was the guy taking the damage for us when we played way back before CoV, so guess I'm doin it again. Just looking for some suggestions, want to try something new that I haven't used and abused so far.

Here is what I have:
50 Fire/Fire Tank (Issue 1-4 farmer)
50 Rock/SS Tank
50 Spines/Regen Scrapper (Issue 4-6 PvP)
50 Elec/Shield Scrapper (AT Farmer)
50 SS/Fire Brute (AT Farmer)

I don't mind using one of the powersets above, but would like to use something else with it that isn't there. Since I'm kind of new to some of the newer sets still I have no idea how good they are. Money for builds isn't really an issue since I can farm on the side, although Hammies/Purples might be out of the question for a while. Thanks in advance!

My 50's: Windigo - 2 (Fire/Fire Tank), Rocky Wall (Stone/SS Tank), Obsidian Pain Spike (Spines/Regen Scrapper), Thunder Tower (Elec/Shield Scrapper), Messiahbolical (SS/Fire Brute)
Virtue Current Projects: Isaac Night (32 Ill/Rad Troller), Grim Marauder (30 BS/Elec Brute), Genesis Tide (22 Psi/Time Corr)

Well if your looking to take damage, I would try a brute, or a tank. Electric armor is a beast, or you can try Willpower. WP is pretty much an all around set with res, +regen/ recov, and +HP. Invuln is pretty solid too, if you can get perma dull pain. Or you can go the other route and take a look as Super Reflexes- very good defence, only down side is the low res, if, and when you get hit, it WILL hurt.

Haven't read much about Electric Armor, I know it is invuln to end drain though isn't it? WP looked interesting, how is the regen compared to the Regeneration set, and does it have avg res against all dmg types including psi? I thought Invuln was still bad compared to Stone, ofc it was when I used to play. How is it now compared to Stone and other sets? I don't see Stone armor talked about at all anymore, I remember it being godlike if built right.

As far as damage goes I'm still seeing SS taking the top spot, with Dark Melee behind it which is weird. How are the others nowadays, I notice a lot of the primaries for Brutes come from Scrapper set?

Sorry for all the questions, just don't wanna make a gimped setup from my horrible knowledge of CoH nowadays.

I'll second Electric Armor. It's not just highly resistant to endurance drain but also has a lot of tools with which to recover Endurance. Power Sink and Energize will keep you happy and blue for a very long time. It's also freaking sturdy once you build up its S/L defense. I took Broadsword and my Electric Armor guy. It's awesome.

WP is pretty cool too. It offers very balanced layers of sturdiness. Its regen won't match that of Regeneration unless you invest very heavily in it or have a bunch of enemies around you at once. Like Electric Armor, add a little S/L defense and WP becomes scary hard to kill.

As for a primary, the sword sets are great for living even longer. Parry and Divine Avalanche will keep you alive and well for longer than most tanks. Super Strength is always a winner, but you probably knew that.

Electric Armor is starting to sound more interesting now, hate dealing with Sappers at higher levels. EA is at the top of my lists for a secondary, how are Katana and Dual Blades, same as the rest of the sword sets? I know Katana was pretty OP back in the day, haven't messed with DB.

Yea SS has been OP since day one heh, that is still def at the top of my lists just needing something new. Swords(?)/EA sounds like a very interesting combo, thanks for the suggestions so far!

Go with the newest thing: Street Justice/Energy Armor.

I don't mind trying Energy Armor other than it has crap for res from what I am reading, which isn't too promising imo. And I don't have the credits yet to get StJ or I would give it a try. It looks like fun, other than the fact that the AoE seems to be pretty bad, which I am almost always trying to jump into big groups of mobs. Not necessarily farming purposes, I do that on the side.

You can farm reasonably well on a stalker these days. With AoEs from secondary, pools, patron/APP, and judgment it's not an issue.

Plus, SS the be-all and end-all of farming primaries has exactly one AoE. All the rest you need to pickup outside the primary anyway.

Your only stated criteria is 'take damage.'

In that case, I would first point you at a dm/inv brute. Once you get your end bar happy(not difficult with performance shifter procs) the durability and damage of this combo is stellar, with the caveat that it does not do much AOE.

Second, I would strongggly advise you to dust off the fire/fire tanker. With the recent changes (last 4 or so issues) tanks are much more competitive damage-wise at the top end, and fire tanks were never exactly slouches at damage, and with a good build, a fire tank is probably the mightiest toon going right now for melee.

Yeah, I know, lol-melee.

With a tooled-up fire/fire I have successfully tanked the first mission of the ITF at +4x8 when a pug set it to the wrong difficulty. Since it was a pug, the buffs I was getting were... Well, there weren't many.

Fire tanks. You likey.

As somewhat of a mid-road build, look at a sd/ss tanker. Rebirth radial does miracles for those guys, and their damage is not bad at all.

Well I want to be able to tank be it with strong regen or high def/res, as well as be able to solo and team well damage wise. Inv has always been something I wanted to try, Dark Melee just seems slow to me for some reason, AoE isn't the main thing I look at even though it sounds like it.

I might dust off my fire/fire for later but want to build something from the ground up. He is slotted in Hammie-O's from waaaayyy back in the day, like around Issue 4-5 when I stopped playing him because of Burn and AoE aggro nerfs. I wouldn't know where to start with him now honestly, but that's something for another day.

Right now I'm looking at Kat-DB/Elec Brute and DM-Kat/Invuln Brute for my next build. Could work the same for tanks, I just like Fury

kat/elec is an excellent combination: the parry bonus on an electrics resists and drains is very, very potent.

dm/inv is....well, it's dm/inv. The toughest toons going outside of tons of rock. The brute version is ESPECIALLY tasty, because of the incredible boon of unstoppable on a brute. It is truly beastly. The ONLY invuln toons, properly built, that should take unstoppable are brutes.

Edit: Do a search on my post history, looking for fire tanks. I have posted my actual in-game build a couple of times, you will like it.

Just something I saw that may have been lost in translation.

Electric_emu mentioned the sword sets offering Parry/Divine Avalanch which both provide +15% Melee/Lethal Def.
Dual Blades does NOT offer this power.
By Sword sets he meant Broad Sword/Katana.

Well that blows , at least that narrows down my choices a bit though. Leaning more toward Kat/Elec for almost unlimited endurance in larger groups. Never was a fan of my melee running out of end and losing toggles at higher levels.

@mauk2
I will def look for your build and work on it when I get home, thinking about it more, I would like to dust off that relic and see him melt face off again .

I must say I am really enjoying BS/Elec right now, got him up to 22 tonight before I logged off and he is one powerful beast, albeit he is eating endurance like mad. I'm still sketchy on creating builds so I need a little bit of help with this guy for leveling and post 50 build if at all possible. I know I pretty much just have to worry about getting my S/L def high enough to where it will softcap using Parry and or a purple insp.

Don't mind what travel power I am using, the theme for this guy (Tech suit powered by electricity with sword also powered by suit) can pretty much go with anything. Don't have the money for a purple/hammi-o build right now, but from using Parry to softcap that shouldn't be a problem I would think.

So more or less a build that suits a team (tank & damage) and solo play. Would appreciate any help!

If you want something that WON'T die (it just won't) Then slap WP on a brute. DMG can be either single target good, or AoE amazing depending on primary you take. I go w/ SS because I love to one shot things.

That or Invuln is what I plan to work on next. I heard Stone/WP was awesome on a Brute because of all the knockdowns?

If you really want to not die then not much beats dm/invuln.

Stone/invuln is also pretty darn survivable and I have always like stone melee. It's slow, and highly resisted damage type, but it is a really fun set. And yes the knock has helped on my stone/elec quite well. he doens't have any defense just resist and knock and it's going ok.

I'll def have a look at DM/Invul, gonna put down the BS/Elec for a few days and work on yet another alt heh. Found the DM/Invul thread as well with some builds inside so that will def help out.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Also, was messing around with building a set for my BS/Elec Brute, still new to this kind of thing but was wanting some critique if possible. Trying to keep away from Purple sets, they looks expensive D:

38.7% S/L (Know 45% is softcap, dunno where I can fix this)
180% Regen
163% Recov
75% Rech

Ooooh, do NOT skip grounded! You will very much want the status protection! This is a huge red flag, take your grounded!

Nits: Maybe a bit more accuracy? Look at squeezing in a Kismet, or just rely on Buildup a lot.

....uh.... You mispelled Marauder?

Thoughts:

Heh, four sets of obi's, gotta love electric armor's infinite well of end.

Throwing one parry soft caps you vs incarnate to all lethal and all melee: This will be a MONSTER.

Other than the lack of grounded, looks solid to me! Not exactly how I'd build it, but hey, it would play like a rock once you fix that.

Just remember: Powersink is an ATTACK. Use it to destroy their end, every spawn, and you will do fine.

Lol that I did spell it wrong, did this build just now with literally no sleep so I'm surprised I even got to finishing it honestly. Good thing I spelled it right in game

Was kinda thrown off on Grounded, read some posts where it was said to be meh because you had to be on/near the ground for it to be active. That was the main reason I took it out, figured I could try and fit a Steadfast in there somewhere at one point. But I will see what I can about fitting it in there, slotted or just a place to put a Steadfast? Thanks for clearing that up .

Regarding Powersink, what would you prefer I put in there, or is the slotting fine just use it as an attack? Open to all kinds of suggestions being this is my first personal build.

Thanks for the feedback

Curious about your reasons for this statement? What makes it so great for brutes but so bad for tanks?

Here's a DM/Invul Scrapper build (can be easily transferred to a Brute with some APP/PPP work) that gets capped defense to everything and perma-dull pain/Soul Drain/Hasten with Incarnates along with a very fast recharging self-heal and really good ST damage along with decent AoE if you go the Mu route on your Brute. With Accolades, capped HP, Siphon Life, capped defense to everything buy psi and extremely high resists to S/L and good resists to the other damage types I figure this character is pretty much immortal outside of insanely stacked, probably unrealistic, odds or something that deals an amazing amount of purely psi damage faster than Siphon can heal it back.
