Apparent changing world -- question

This is just something I'm curious about: Some of the newer contacts seem to come and go and/or change. I'm thinking about at least one in Atlas Park and a couple in First Ward. (I'm trying to avoid spoilers.) It's cool that the world changes as you progress through an arc, but it seems weird knowing that other characters probably don't see quite the same world.

How is this possible? Are you in an instanced version of the city map even though the map is uncovered as it would be in an area where you've been before? Or are you actually in the normal city zone? If you are, how does it handle the different versions different people should see? Do people who don't have that contact see you as standing near an empty spot?

Im not sure how it's accomplished. I can say that when you're teamed, you see the would based on the team leader's experiences.

In Beta, I was leading and saw one contact, then I passed the star and saw the other contact.

Indeed. If you let a contact die then you will see an empty spot. But other people will still see the contact. And you will see them standing there talking to an empty space.

Whoa, which contact(s) can you let die?

I don't know about the new stuff, but you've been able to kill off contacts since Praetoria.

That's what I was afraid of. I'd rather have a generic NPC who appears than people "talking" to an empty space. Though I supposed it just looks like a person/people standing around.

I do like the alternate-outcome stuff though, don't get me wrong. I'm really enjoying the First Ward.

The contact who is 'removed' from the game world is still there. They're just invisible and intangible. If you move quickly enough to them from outside draw distance (Superspeed at them, or drop from the zone ceiling) they will be drawn for a moment and you can see them, but they'll then quickly disappear from view.

It's a technique known as "phasing", where basically the server tells your client to draw different things depending on your character's database entry.

On a side note, it amuses me that ten years ago, the fact that two people playing a game on two different computers could see the *same* things was what made people go "wow, how do they do that?!". History goes in cycles and all that.

If it helps, you could imagine they're on the phone/and earpiece/telepathic conversation.

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

Since they don't do any sort of 'talking' emote (unless they manually do it...), you've no way to know whether they're actually talking with an NPC, or just standing there. Personally, I wouldn't like if they replaced them with a generic NPC... that wouldn't sit right with me!

I remember an old post (unless I'm hallucinating, which is possible, but I don't think so in this case) by BABs where he mentioned logging into his character for a rikti raid on galaxy city, making the trainer babs invisible and intangible, then helping people fight the rikti. And when he logged off, there were a load of petitions about the server causing the galaxy city trainer to crash and vanish.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

I remember hearing about BABs coming alive before. Ghost Witch has done the same thing in Pocket D... although, at least in her case, she deleted the NPC from the current instance's map and placed her character in that same spot (based on what I remember of her explanation), so it would look like the NPC just came alive.

This was likely way before they had anywhere near the tech to actually do it the way they currently do it.
