Badge Count

What in your opinion makes someone a "badger"? Is it purely badge count? A collection of certain types of badges? What would you deem as a "hardcore badger"?

The reason I bring it up is, I see alot of people with 300-400 badges, to me, that is pretty serious dedication. It takes work to amass that number, not just random teaming/soloing. Sure, I know alot of people that have 1000 +, but for me...300 + is a pretty decent number. It also give me, and I may be alone in this, some kind of indicator that they know how to play that toon, not that they are a great player, but on that toon they are somewhat proficient. Once again, I may be alone on this, but I have never seen a bad player with alot of badges (talking 900+).

Again, I am not saying ALL badge hunters are good players, or that people with badge hunting toons are not good at playing alts they make. I am merely stating that a decent badge count, to me, indicates that the person driving the toon cares about that toon enough to know how to play it effectively, and conversely I know there are people out there that do not badge hunt that are wonderful playing their chosen AT.

This is all my opinion and not intended to start any flames/fights.

Well my 50s that aren't badge-hunters average around 150 badges each, so I'd say anything over 300 clearly indicates intent to badge, but I wouldn't want to set a threshold for defining a "badger".

Not trying to set a "threshold" per se, just what in your opinion makes someone a badge hunter to you.

I have a few toons that have 300+ badges these have been picked up while playing and on rare occasions when I have collected the exploration badges so that I could set a TP portal for the area.I hold my hat up to these people that have 600+ badges as that takes dedication to collect. Also we must remember a lot of badges are also mission based so they must be pretty decent players as well

Everything varies of course but I'd say the current indicator between a person who is actively collecting badges and someone who is otherwise just a long time player of the game is probably in the 250-300 badge count range at this point. It think once you get past say 500 there's no question the person is a dedicated badger.

As a badger myself I respect anyone who enjoys that part of the game, even if you're in it just to farm for the Accolade powers. But I guess I would personally reserve the term "hardcore" badger for anyone who has many of the obviously harder badges to get such as the Master/Incarnate Trial badges and/or people who have say at least 1,000 badges or more. Let's just say it takes a lot to impress me about another person's badges.

i have some high played toons which arent badge toons which are in the 300s in terms of badges (theres almost 500 explores alone in the game at this point)

i would consider someone with 500ish to be a starting badger, 1000+ for serious badger

poeple who are hitting near the badge caps i would call hardcore badgers lol (almost up to 1281 myself lol)

300 may be a good number, but I have a non badger who is over 300, just from accolades and getting explore badges for merits.

One other thing is if you see someone over 300 badges they just may be a spouse or friend of a badger. I have brought my wife's toon along to help get badges especially with some of the old defeat badges back in the day. She doesn't go out of her way to get badges but doesn't run from them either.

I consider anyone over 400 badges to be a badge-hunter. A serious badger would have at least 1000 badges.
I would expect players with a large badge count to have great amount of knowledge about the game.
I also find that a high level of badges show commitment.

Sliding scale:

0-150 : Basic player. May be just interested in getting accolades or hasn't played the character long enough.

150-300: Mild badge collector (depending on level, if sub-20 then move 2 notches up the scale). May have set aside time to collect explores.

300-500: Enthusiastic Badge Collector (if sub-20, move up two notches). Tends to go slightly out of the way to collect badges and likely has a fair competency of the character.

500-800: Dedicated Badge Collector. You have to go out of your way to get this many badges. This player understands their character well and likely has spent a great deal of time on it.

=== Hardcore Badge Collectors below ===

800-1,100: Committed Badge Collector. This group had to have switched sides and have gone out of their way to get most of both sides badges.

1,100-Max: Zealous Badge Collectors. It takes a lot of time and effort to get the remaining badges. Farms, dozens of Master of Attempts with TF/SF/Trials that might not be to the player's liking, and generally going above & beyond regular play to get badges.

I'd say someone can be called a badger when they're interested in obtaining badges for the sake of earning the badges themselves.

It doesn't matter how many they have now, or whether they intend to "catch 'em all" or not, as long as they're interested in badging outside of just earning gameplay rewards such as Accolades or costume/weapon unlocks. It's really all about the passion one has for the act of badging; if you have that passion, then you're a badger.

I start complimenting the badge count around 500 for random players. I guess that's my threshold.

Anyone who actively seeks to collect badges for the sake of collecting them, regardless of actual number of collected shinnies.

This is what will keep me from getting all the badges on my main character. I have slowly worked on getting them over the years, not farming, just trying to get them. And now I can't get them all because the character is a hardcore hero. I ran one Vigilante mission for that badge and it felt dirty. Which means starting over on a different character and the next highest to my main's 870 only has 218. I just don't know if I can handle the Invention badges again.

You are a badger if you've one toon with over 800 badges.

You are a hardcore badger if you've two or more toons with over 800 badges.

EDIT: Let me expand... prior to going rogue, many badgers created two badgers, one for hero side badging and one for villian side badging. I seriously salute those who carried on with both badgers once going rogue came along.

Been there, did that: Blue Rabbit (hero badger) and Maroon Hare (villain badger). There's even crazier people who do it on all their toons! (Salacious over on Union)

There's nothing wrong with working on a single-side badger. I consciously made the decision to keep my third badger blueside only for the same "hardcore hero" character reasons as much as anything else. Besides I figured having two other badgers keeping up with all the side-switching was enough.

Yeah, I'm guilty of that. Have my hero badger who has made the trip to both sides, sitting at almost 1200. My villain badger is still heroside, with a little over 1100.

Yet, there are others who have 1250+ badges on 3+ toons; that is serious dedication/insanity.

I find your lack of signature disturbing.

I don't take numbers into consideration so much as attitude. In my opinion:

- "Badgers" self-identify, enjoying obtaining and/or having obtained badges (not the same thing) and therefore make special efforts to collect badges on their own and/or with a group. They enjoy badging but don't place it front and center of other things they might enjoy more after logging in.

Casual badgers might not work on a badge if they consider that particular badge to be grindy - not because they're lazy or not a "true" badger but because they just don't need every badge. I also know a lot of casual badgers who will opt to get badges as the 3rd thing to do (behind making and leveling new alts, reading through new arcs, etc) when a new issue is released.

My friend Xan probably has more badges than most. He comes to all of our Master badge runs when new content comes out. To paraphrase a thousand Skype calls where we tease him that he "is" a badger and should just work on getting them all.... he joins us because he enjoys the experience and our company and "wants to help". If asked, he always says, "I'm not a badger." Man says he's not a badger, whaddaya gunna do, Dog?
- "Hardcore Badgers" are badgers who make efforts to obtain 1. every badge (possible for their abilities) and/or 2. as soon as it comes out.. and 3. make every possible effort (their kids and school come first) and 4. contribute in ways great or small.
Dinah has far less time than the others in our group. If her numbers don't climb as quickly as others, she doesn't get upset. I consider her a hardcore badger because when she does have precious few free minutes to play, she makes the most of it, makes efforts (on her own or with us) without complaining or expecting help. Right now, her main is in the top CIT 50 with 1277 badges including Master Keyes and Master UT - considering the amount of time she has, I'd say she's pretty ******* hardcore.

Europa switched servers. I don't recommend it for everyone but she did what was right for her. Here's what makes her hardcore. She switched servers and brought friends. She got on every major channel and Mo's within a heartbeat of a new badge going live because she hustles - she asks - she tries - she helps and people like and remember her. She Mo's before most other longtime hardcore badgers on a server new to her. Seriously WTF and GG, m'lady. Nicely done.
--

Debated adding two cents to the till on one more clarification on numbers versus attitude but it's a conversation I had recently with someone in this thread. I don't consider high number achievers to be "hardcore badgers" if they don't actively contribute to their own or team success. This is not to bash casual badgers (and really has nothing to do with them so much as folks who self-identify as "hardcore") because there's many casual badgers who go above and beyond to help themselves and one another. It's just that I don't consider a high number to be the mark of a "hardcore badger" if they earned that by always tagging along and doing bare minimum to help themselves or others while complaining about the badge or efforts nearly the entire time.

Case in point, my steady badge group salivates when a new issue is about to release. We make plans on when and where to meet after launch - as a few months go by, work schedules might change. "Is every night at 7:45 pm CST good for everyone? No? <waits for feedback> 8 it is and twice on Sunday." We assemble, work together to figure things out by having meetings before or after any initial incompletes to get the job done and return night after night to help others who haven't badged yet. These folks will also, if asked and without complaint, alt to an AT/powerset that is preferred for balance for initial attempts. That being said, we have a really good track record of badging fairly quickly, even on new Mo's. But here's the difference....

Because we have a badge group, we get a lot of pm's such as "When you all run, can you send me an invite." No problem, after our SG badgers and SG-mates get first spot dibs. Here's my problem: I know folks who have high numbers and want to get every badge possible but never contribute beyond participation and, most importantly, want help at their convenience sometimes weeks later. "Can't make it, wanted to work on a new build." Not a problem; catch you tomorrow same time. "My friend just logged in. Darn. Catch you next time." "I heard it's bugged. Call me when you get it and I'll make the next run." I'm low on damage, got an hour? "Yeah but my badger is a controller. Sorry. Call me when you need a controller." "Got a spot? I don't think I can do the last mission. Can I just sit in the hospital?" (that gets a no answer/no invite from me) - this goes on until everyone has badged within 7 days of our marathon and ends weeks later with "Hey, when are you guys going to run again? I don't have it yet." sent to each of our trial leaders.

Here's my interpretation of that week's responses from the same individual:

- I have no problem with: "Can't make it, wanted to work on a new build" or "My friend just logged in. Darn. Catch you next time".

- I wince a little at: "I heard it's bugged. Call me when you get it and I'll make the next run." if there's no confirmation it's bugged. I like folks to get fiesty and make an effort to try it even for the sake of getting to know the lay of the land before a solid Mo attempt.

- I wince a little at: "(you already said you're short on X) but my badger is a controller. Sorry. Call me when you need a controller." This is situational for me. Some folks are really busy. I might not make special efforts to run an 8th night for that individual who couldn't make it the other 7 days and has a habit of only coming when it was ideal for them.

- I hate responses like: "Can I just sit in the hospital?" and (weeks later) "Hey, when are you guys going to run again? I don't have it yet." if it gets pushy. Constant requests aren't so bad as much as the expectation that someone else will gather bodies much later and run it "for them" until they badge.

To me, that is a third type of badger.

Nothing wrong with it, it just means basically starting over. Probably with my villain that is going to go all the way to Vigilante. But he doesn't even have 200. I guess I need to start him in Ouro on those badges and getting salvage for the Invention badges.

I think badge hunters fall into several catagories. I have one badger with about 1260 but im not that hardcore.

Example I still dont have master of kahn and just got master recluse this week. I started the toon about 7 years ago. So i have had lots of time to badge.

Most of it was done before ios were out and a lot were done before Villans came out.

So its not that hard or much time if you like the toon and stated that long ago. But i see some people that have a 2 year old toon with more badges than i have and that takes some serious hard core play.

I did empath at night afk same with the dmg badges. Hard to set that up now. things like that have changed some got easier to get, some got harder. I would hate to have to do the shard tfs or the police band badges villan side on a slow server.

So i think it all depends. One think it has helped me be a better player on that toon than any other.

Arrange an "incident" where he's replaced by an impostor or mind-controlled by someone intent on ruining his good name. When he breaks free, he can return to being a hero and work towards making amends for all the evil that was done in his name.

Of my two side-switching badgers one of them was always what this game would call a "Vigilante" when it came to questions of Good and Evil long before switching alignments was possible. Justifying her trips back and forth are therefore pretty easy.

My other side-switcher was always supposed to be a hero but I just came up with this idea that one of her science experiments backfired on her and caused her to become temporarily evil like what happens to Superman when he gets exposed to whatever flavor of kryptonite turns him evil. I even came up with a "bizarro" version of one of her main costumes used while she's busy being evil on the redside.

Whatever works, whether you need a "reason" for doing it or not.
