What happened?
Start over. What happened...
Enhancement diversification - no more 1 acc 5 damage.
Inventions - can do *interesting* things to your character
PVP Gained - for those that like it
PVP Lost - after massive changes
Praetoria - see "Going Rogue." Side switching, etc. Available in the paragon market.
Multiple zones and powersets.
And the "Freedom" hybrid model.
Just for a fast rundown.
Generally... browse paragonwiki.com.
Well obviously this is an incredibly broad question, since you seem to have missed a large portion of the life of the game, so the changes would take a huge amount of time to go through and would probably be overwhelming to you in any event.
I would recommend you make a brand new character for now to get reacquainted with the game and perhaps come back to your old characters at some later time once you are again comfortable with the way things work. If you have specific questions feel free to ask them either in this thread or elsewhere on the Player Questions forum and I am certain you will get plenty of swift and helpful replies.
If you do happen to be feeling ambitious, you can find a breakdown of all the changes to the game at ParagonWiki, which has it broken down into the changes in each individual Issue.

Things not on Bill's list:
Power Customization (ability to recolor any power with visual effects, alternate weapon models for those sets that use them, alternate animations for certain sets)
Mission Architect - player-made content (sadly, this is mostly exploited as a farming/PLing tool - yeah, this still happens, it's just not the same missions as back then)
Gradual revamping of old content (Positron TF is no longer a tedious slog, and is now broken into 2 parts)
Flashback/Ouroboros - ability to (re)do story arcs you've outleveled (even if you never did them in the first place), being exemped down to the appropriate level for the duration of the arc
Super-sidekicking: You don't need to pair everyone up with a sidekick now, everyone is SKed/exemped to the team leader/mission holder
And so so so much other stuff. I started playing right around the time you stopped, from the sound of it, and it still blows me away how much the game has changed during that time. To echo the previous two posters, definitely spend some time browsing the articles on the Issues you've missed on ParagonWiki.

These. Start a new toon, the new stuff is too darn fun.
That'll let you learn what is going on now. For a rundown of changes, see the wiki link.
I'll also toss out:
Look at the bottom of the forum for your server. In there will be a thread about teaming chat channels. You will want to join those. Lots of people have a hard time finding teams without them and having people to play with makes a world of difference.
Also, welcome back!

wow... so there is no more pvp? I got on my level 50, and started to fly around a little bit, saw people with 50 +1. Then i joined a group and well lets just say it was a lot bigger group than i remembered... and then so many crazy powers.... what happened to having to use power slots to get like speed, jumping, stamina, and health boosts power slots?

As was already said, the Fitness power pool was made free to everybody at level 2 (if you already had any of it on a character, you had to respec to gain it for free at level 2). Travel powers can be taken at level 4 on all characters, and there's a new 5th tier power in each of the travel pools (requires two picks in the pool before to get, and to be level 14+).
You might as well forget everything you knew from before you left... at best it won't help you, and at worst it'll actively hurt you (such as the pre-ED idea of how enhancements work). Hell, SOs are old hat these days.
Oh, and Architect Entertainment (design your own custom story arcs). This thread could list stuff for... quite a long time.

1 more question.
I should probably make another thread for this... but this is all dealing with me so sorry if i should or shouldnt.... I was wondering if the rewards i get from email are for all my characters or just 1. I have rewards for account items and character items. Does this mean that for the account ones i have all of them that i have for each of my characters, or i get them only once on 1 character? This goes for the character items.
Account Items can be claimed once on each character, current and future.
Character Items can be claimed once by one character, period.

And items as an attachment in the inbox can only be claimed once, ever, too.

I was assured, up and down, in the "Casual players" thread that SOs are still the dominant form of enhancement, that builds filled entirely (or even mostly) with crafted IOs are not the "norm", and that not everybody chases gear (IO sets) as if it was the "new hat" you have to wear in order to be accepted or effective.
NOR-RAD - 50 Rad/Rad/Elec Defender - Nikki Stryker - 50 DM/SR/Weap Scrapper - Iron Marauder - 50 Eng/Eng/Pow Blaster
Lion of Might - 50 SS/Inv/Eng Tanker - Darling Nikkee - 50 (+3) StJ/WP/Eng Brute - Ice Giant Kurg - 36 Ice/Storm Controller
What is meant by "old hat"? Usually that is a way of saying "obsolete".

1) old-fashioned; out-of-date (note, that this doesn't mean obsolete, just not current or bleeding edge)
2) well-known or familiar to the point of being trite or commonplace
SOs are not the newest. They are commonplace. So they are pretty 'old hat' if you accept the above definition, which I found in an online dictionary (but the note was my addendum).
But, many folks do still use them. A lot of folks use them extensively in their builds, I'd wager. I don't think many folks use them exclusively, as I think the majority of players will sprinkle in a proc, or a cheap global, and a few generic IOs at the least, but that's just my guess.
I most all of my alts (and there are many) I use SOs almost exclusively while leveling up. I'll grab the Numi +Regen/+Recov and the Miracle +Recov, and a +KB protection if my alt doesn't have some other way to get it, and maybe another IO here and there, but almost all SOs the rest of the way. I think there are probably many folks that do likewise, and maybe incorporating some minor franken-slotting.
The number one method of being effective prior to end game is know how to use your sets, know how the enemies work, know how to work with (not against) your team and it's strengths. After that I'd say next is power selection, more than slotting.
That's my experience, at least.
Note: if you plan to farm via tailored missions in AE all the way to 50, that obviously changes. In order to leverage the most advantage, many folks there do IO a lot more, depending on the set they are self PLing. The best farming ATs/sets obvioujsly don't need to, but some combos really do.
If you're running Pugs, and TFs, and regular content, and solo-ing some arcs, really all you need is to know what you're doing, and SOs. Heck, if you're really skilled, DOs might be fine.
So what are SOs and DOs? Just to clarify whats what for enhancements and such? I just remember buying enhancement stuff from stores, and I think that big blob Hamidon? gave 1 really good one when you beat him.

Hamidon Origin (HO - yes yes, we know, bad acronym) are the ones that Hami drops, you can now also get them from the Statesman Task Force or Lord Recluse's Strike Force (albeit in Synthetic form, they are functionally identical to the "real thing"). HOs can enhance multiple aspects of a power at once, like Damage/Accuracy. Invention Origin (IO) Set enhancements can also do this.

We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...
- TO = Training Origin - the ones you see for most of the early game up to about Lvl 20
- DO = Dual Origin - the ones you start buying from the origin-specific stores in Steel Canyon and such. Lvl 15 and up. Locked to either of two origins (e.g., a Tech/Natural DO can only be used by Tech or Natural origin toons). Twice as effective as TOs.
- SO = Single Origin - the ones you start slotting at Lvl 22 to give you the best boosts. Locked to a specific character origin (e.g., Tech SOs can only be used by Tech origin toons). Twice as effective as DOs.
- HO = Hamidon Origin - super mega enhancements you get from completing the Hamidon Raid. About 50% better than SOs, and give more than just one type of buff (i.e., Acc/Dmg).
- IO = Invention Origin - the kind you craft and that never "expire" no matter what level you become. Effectiveness is dependent on the level of the IO though. The ones that come from "special" recipes provide extra bonuses if you slot more than one of them in a power (called set bonuses).
NOR-RAD - 50 Rad/Rad/Elec Defender - Nikki Stryker - 50 DM/SR/Weap Scrapper - Iron Marauder - 50 Eng/Eng/Pow Blaster
Lion of Might - 50 SS/Inv/Eng Tanker - Darling Nikkee - 50 (+3) StJ/WP/Eng Brute - Ice Giant Kurg - 36 Ice/Storm Controller
There are Titan-Os which I've never seen, and the special Level 1 Damage enhancements you get with new toons as a tier 7 Paragon Reward now, which originally came from buying the Good vs. Evil deluxe edition boxed set or something.

There's also Hydra Origins, the other HO meat.

"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."

Note that Hamis aren't 50% better than SOs. They are the same percentages as SOs (33% at even level); they are basically two or three SOs in one enhancement. Triple-HOs are better than any set piece if a power can use all three enhancement values: that's 99% total enhancement value in one slot. Dual-HOs are still better than most set pieces, as that's 66% in one slot (basically equal to a purple dual-mod).
Though with Enhancement Boosters now able to +5 IOs, dual- and tri-mod set pieces are giving HOs a run for their money, and purple dual- and tri-mod pieces out-perform.

Hi,
So I started playing this game when i was 13 or 14, I am now 19. I want to get back into the game, but so much has changed. I dont know where to start or how things have changed. I came back online to play with a friend for a bit 3 or 4 years ago, but never really played the game. I was wondering if someone could tell me what happened to the game. I would love it if someone would just rant about what happened, good and bad. I remember back when people were power leveled with that ninja mission. I am assuming that doesnt happen anymore. The game looks great, but i have no idea where to start. I have a level 50 fire blaster, and a couple level 20s. I hope someone can help.
Monkty.
