Forum Login Failure due to bad ID/Password

I didn't see this solution posted here, although you can find it in the knowledge base with some dedicated searching.

Twice now, I've been locked out of the forum for bad user ID or password. The forum login is the same as the game login, but I could access the game just fine. It seems the two accounts can get out of sync.

Assuming you have created a Forum Account already, the solution is to reset your game password, which will sync the two accounts. Here's how:

Log into NCSoft Account Management (https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/plaync_login.pl)
Click Game Accounts
Click City of Heroes / City of Villains
Click Change Password
Set Password (you can use the same password you have now)

This should sync the Forum account password with the game account password.

Thank you!!!!

Had this exact problem and managed to stumble on fixing it this way. Was still annoying though and for some reason I had to do it twice before it seemed to take.

Good idea posting it for those who have the same problem.

Seirously this was driving me nuts.

(And I had to do it twice too)

Having struggled with this this weekend I will stress to go the exact route the OP uses. There is another way to set password that doesn't work. You need to find the "change password" section through clicking the "City of Heroes/Villains" on the Game Accounts page just as described.

Thanks much OP!

I have been soooo beating my head against this wall.

I was resetting my master account rather than my game account.

Thank you for posting these directions to help me find what I was doing wrong.

(Still waiting any response from support from a ticket filed, Friday, fwiw.)

I have had to go through it a few times now. I expect that if the trend continues I will have to reset again in 48 hours. Very frustrating.

If you check out the Commuinty Digest, they mention that a) they know about it, and b) they should have it fixed this week.

Yes it's an annoying PITA bug, I had to do it again when I21 launched and as usual I remembered what to do after I got frustrated and lost my temper. <sigh>

I ended up with a double whammy; first I got the "bad password" error on the forums and then I got yet another with the master account login demanding the city/road you grew up in refusing to accept the correct answers.

Finally last night the master login deigned to accept the correct login info and I was able to reset my game account password. It's been just a mite frustrating.

As with most I was still able to get into the game without any issues... well other than the new massive lag.

Sorry to hear about your lag issues. Haven't noticed any yet myself this time.

Once I get in game it's not that bad (usually, it was a bit brutal Friday) but it takes ~30 seconds after I login before I get the character list. Last week it took ~3 seconds to get the character list.

To be fair, this is the 4th different place it's posted on the forum hehe.

I am glad though, that more and more people are seeing this now its posted in lots of different topics, and able to get access.

I am a little disapointed that the Forum Website has not made any of the posts obvious to everyone viewing the forums. There should have been quite a large announcment on the main page, when people started to figure this out about a week ago to re-gain forum access.

Zwillinger updated the announcement, the problem seems to now be fixed (as I can post from this account again). If you still have problems, the solution is apparently to log into the game, which should update the forum login.

Note that you have to log into the game and actually get on a character, not just the server selection screen, and it still takes a while (maybe 15 minutes) for the password to "propagate" to all the places it needs to go, it won't happen instantly.

I believe that last line should actually read "Set Password (you can use the same password you have now assuming it conforms to the new[ish] password criteria of 8-14 letters, must contain at least one number and letter")".

Some people [*waves hand, embarrassed*] with (formerly) inferior password security could not use their existing password -- I could still log into the game, but not the forum. Finally found this tip in another thread, went to use the same password and got hit with the above.

Fixed a tiny little error.

Also, don't be embarassed, I figure anyone trying to brute force their way in by guessing passwords is more likely to try passwords that conform to the enforced standard. Passwords that don't conform to the standard might be more secure against such attempts (why guess passwords that shouldn't be possible?). If they get your password by some other means (malware, phishing, keyloggers, etc) then no password can help you, because they have it*.

I wish they would allow longer passwords, but at least the restrictions in use are more secure than what my bank uses. (seriously - 8 characters max, alpha only, does not appear to be case sensitive. )

*although this is an argument in favour of regularly scanning your machine and changing passwords routinely.

Doh! And thanks -- I started to double check that by changing my password again, then decided I was about 95% sure I was right...and wasn't! So thanks for the correction!

Amusingly, this whole thing had me discussing password security with two friends, and how adding numbers to an all-alpha password makes things x times more secure, and then y times more secure if you can add symbols to the mix (which we can't here -- yet.) We also discussed random guesswork vs. keystroke loggers and malware, too, and how if someone's THAT serious about hacking an account then no password is truly "safe."

One of those friends also reminded me of a place we both worked where we were forced to change passwords every 60 or 90 days "and you'd think I'd have learned." "Yeah, I'm lazy too. It's human nature."

Sort of like double-checking my facts! Ooops.
