Beam Rifle worth the money?
Beam/Time for Bonzo.
The Zapper.
The Great Disintegrator.
I'm only ever gonna see the discounted price of anything as worth it. The discounted price is more like the real value.
Although in my hour of weakness I bought the Barbarian costume set.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
I would rather see no BR at all, then the way i see it now. Then rather a grav/kin ranged set, then something like this.
|
What specifically do you not like about it?
My BR/Traps Corr is just about twenty and loads of fun. I definitely enjoy the graphics and sounds so far (haven't heard the top tier sounds since the power customization screen doesn't play them), and the damage seems quite reasonable (plus, the easily perma-able -regen should help some for AV soloing).
I loved the absurdly flashy nature of Dual Pistols, and at the same time I love the much more straight forward Beam Rifle animations. It could definitely use a few more weapon model options IMO, but the few free ones are definitely fairly nice (I opted for the Incredibly Reliable Rifle )

I am looking forward to an update to AR actually.
HOLY HELL GUYS.
Beam Rifle / Poison hits HARD. Just sayin'. |
I've made a couple chars since the new issue hit. a Dark/MA tank and a Beam/Poison corrupter. Afterwards I went out to the forums to see what ppl might have thought of em and there you are talking about how good they look. BTW, the song on your DA sux video was done by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. In case you never figured it out.
Question is, will Beam/Poison be survivable enough.
Dechs, we've been thinking alike on this issue.

Of course it can be. The only question is are you willing to make other sacrifices in the build to hit the S/L softcap?
Me? I'm going with the "damn survival, I'll just kill 'em faster" method.
Where to now?

@ NewScrapper,
-Short answer... if you rarely play Blasting types, then skip it.
-More involved answer... Even some serious Blast lovers are split on Beam Rifle, 'tis a tricky set to run and gun with. Corruptors seem* to have the most effective use out of the set.
I personally played (and currently on live) on Beta a BR/Poison Corr. I love it. If there are 2+ BRs on a team, the disintegration mayhem is awesome. Solo, the set works well if you do a little planning.
I suggest playing around with one on Beta/Test and make your own judgements. Hell, try teaming with a few BRs on live and grill them for real time experience.
Good luck =D

Maybe I should just box him with a time fender for the Defense and healz.
I had no intentions of ever picking it up, but after seeing my friend using it, and there being a discount, I caved in and bought it last night. I've got to admit that it's a really fun set once you grab Disintegrate, and well worth the points to me. The damage isn't anything to write home about yet (level 10), but it keeps me busy and requires a little thought while using which I tend to enjoy.

Beam rifle together with time manipulation immediately clicked in my head for a character I wanted to create for quite a while now. For me it's worth the money for the look...I really don't care for numbers.

NewScrapper, if you don't play ranged archetypes much, then skip it. You gotta remember, the sale is 20% off, i.e. 160 points off, i.e. about a $2 discount. This isn't like the character transfer bundle for 1600 and they've knocked off a zero.
Believe me, I hear ya: it's a new shiny plaything, it looks pretty cool, a lot of people are running around with it, blah blah blah. But be a smart shopper. If you aren't going to get a decent amount of mileage from it, don't get it.
I am the opposite of you: I don't play melee much. So when Street Justice and Titan Weapons come out, unless I think up a great concept/idea/combo that I want to try, I won't be buying them, no matter how cool they may look.
I am all for giving Paragon Studios my money so they can continue to prosper, but I intend to spend on things I will use, as opposed to something that is cool in theory but that I will not necessarily end up using.

Ok, don't cross the streams. Thanks for the important safety tip NeoSaturn.

I'd be inclined to grab it. Er. I did. On both accounts. I don't even usually like weapon blast sets, and redraw makes it seem unfun to me unless they add a Trick Bullet set. But! WHO CARES? IT IS A GIANT GUN!
This is CoH. If they let you replace your secondary for any AT with the Die Horribly set, which has nine death animations including the ghoul one, and when you trigger a power in it you die (using that animation), people would take it. And build characters that could, at the very least, run at +1/x8. |
On topic... I picked it up because I had points and not much better to do. I didn't play it much in beta and don't have any ideas in mind for one but I like ranged damage characters. And I don't like weapon sets.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

For those that prefer Blasters to Corruptors and Defenders (like me), it works well enough for Blasters. It leans a lot more to AOE, and hits really hard for ST damage. I feel relatively safe in saying that my Beam Blaster drops bosses and EBs faster than my other Blasters, and that's after playing one on test in the 20s and 40s (after level bumps). He didn't have as many IOs as my other Blasters, so he did get hit more often (I go for defense on my Blasters), but he did do well.
That said, Beam does okay for AOE. Its nuke is somewhere between the crashless and crashing nukes for recharge, and is in the same boat for damage, so you'll be able to use it fairly often. Out of their, the main AOE power is a big cone, if with a short range. Still, it shouldn't be hard to hit most of a mob with this. Your other cone is extremely narrow (like Piercing Shot from Dual Pistols), but you can easily line things up to hit two mobs with that attack before leaping in, and that power hits quite hard as well.
Interestingly, I was having a hard time finding a pairing for it, as I have a lot of /En Blasters already. Fire is actually fun, and you can match up the colors relatively well. Its AOEs can help make up for Beam's weaker performance in that category as well.

I'm having a lot of fun with an FF/Beam defender. FF means you don't have to watch redraw much at all, and matches beam's futuristic look pretty much perfectly.
It is hardly optimized but very workable and thematically nice.
Here is my current plan for a pretty affordable build which is a welcome relief after all of the kinetic combat + LoTG builds I seem to have been doing lately:
Used archery instead of beam rifle because my mids doesn't have beam, but replace with relevant powers. Travel power is that hoverboard for now and I guess a jet pack when I get worried about toggles...or I can ditch conserve power I suppose. Has soft-capped ranged plus aoe defense, as well as 71% s/l resist, so is pretty survivable. Has the status protection of dispersion, so pretty tank-ish.
Not saying it is a wonder-build or anything, just a pretty afforable one that ought to be okay. Right now I am just having fun playing with the beam character and not trying to do much else.
Still level 14 now, so a long way to go. I like to try to get accolades on the way up, because it can be really boring getting them at the end, so it might take me a while.

Weird thing was, when I was reading about the two new sets I figured Time would suit me down to the ground and I'd no interest in Beam. But when it went live I really liked the Beam effects of teammates and I found Time a bit meh (the sound effects I think).
Both sets seem pretty PROC-compatible as well which will be nice going forward
If I can find a name I like to go along with it I might pick it up. I'm having enough fun with my Dark/mental blaster and Time/Fire defender that I don't really want to have another ranged character to try and split time between.
The name I wanted on Pinnacle is taken, so it will sit there in the store until I come up with another one that makes me laugh like the first one did. (The name was Ronald Raygun)
See, it's gems like these that make me check Claws' post history every once in a while to make sure I haven't missed anything good lately.
