Praetorian EAT

Hopefully the devs are Already working on this. But anyway...

anyone have any cool ideas for a potential Praetorian EAT (unlocked by getting a Praetorian to 20, and only startable in Praetoria)?

My idea is a Hamidon/DE based EAT....but I don't really have any ideas yet for how to make that an interesting and unique AT...

anybody?

A Clockwork and/or PPD EAT would be worth looking at. Perhaps a Resistance EAT could be worked out too. I do like the thought of a Hamidon/DE "Infected" EAT, there could be some interesting visuals, vine wrapped costumes ect.

Hamidon powers could perhaps include things like:
1. "Summon Swarms", those bee like DE swarming things.
2."Pollen Cloud" a choking mass AoE attack/debuff.
3. "Tree of Life" a health buff like the Triage Beacon.

Additionally, there are many thorn & vine powers from other ATs and power sets that could be rolled into the Hamidon set fairly straight across. . .

The more I think about it the more I like this idea!

I would be in favor of a powerset based around the backpacks that the heavy and elite IDF troopers tend to get. Those things look wicked.

There was a thread some months ago that fully detail a DE EAT as the Praetorian EAT. Looked fun to play.

Well, I had the idea of DE ATs years ago. When they included Pretoria, I though of this:

Quote:
What about redeemed Devoured?
They could start like Hamidon's pawns, then break free of his control and join the Praetorians against him.
And they could do them to have branches like VEATs, starting like a basic Devoured and gaining abilities of:
- Earth / Crystal (melee + control)
- Plant / Fungus (ranged + healing)

P.D.:
Digging in my HDD I found a .doc from 2007:

Plantoid

Plantoids are the result of an humanoid being infected by an odd spore of unknown origin. Plantoids have a very good resistance vs all type of damage but fire (their very true weakness) and toxic attacks that help them to defend themselves. They also can shapeshift into 2 other forms. Also, plantoids can take advantage from their teammates' origins, empowering themself. They have no access to Leaping, Flight nor Epic Power Pools.

Here's my thing with a Praetorian EAT:

They're not done with the primary storylines of Praetoria yet.

Now, yeah, this is all opinion and POV, but the way I see Epic ATs are as - well, think "Professor of Fifth Dynasty Egyptology" versus "History teacher." One focuses in FAR more detail on a specific segment of the lore (the Epic) while the other (standard AT) touches on it in passing. (And yes, the VEATs were rushed and did a piss-poor job of this - you can tell, the early arcs had some work done, the latter ones might as well not exist, capped off with that horrible metagame "Doctor brainstorm proliferated powers" speech.) After all, "Epic" in this use is "Tied to the lore."

Unfortunately, it seems a lot of people just look at it and go "ooh, powers." Or maybe "powers and graphics." (Or even "ooh, tankmage.")

So - while looking for a PEAT, ask yourself what would be doable with a unique storyline that makes sense from 1-50? As interesting as a DE-based one would be - how would you play it in Praetoria? As soon as you stepped foot in there, pretty much everyone should converge to wipe you out. Even in Primal (well, maybe not the Isles,) you'd be seen as a threat. What would make an interesting 1-50 storyline for the guys with the backpack - and still make sense to play with the existing storylines? What isn't actually covered that can be looked into with enough detail to *make* a set of existing storylines?

And, for a Praetorian EAT, especially - think of the storyline work for hero, villain *and* side switching. No, it hasn't been updated for HEAT or VEAT, but the tech didn't exist at the time, either. A PEAT would really have to be written taking that into account.

The Coralax, the Blood of the Black Stream, even potentially the Rikti (though I think they're covered fairly well, I can see going through the Rikti Civil War being enough to pull from 1-50 - as well as choosing sides) I'd say have more potential there than a Praetorian at the moment.

And if your reaction is "Who cares," well, you're ignoring what the "E" stands for and don't want an Epic AT then. You want a powerset.

Posted

I would have agreed with you when "Epic" meant getting a toon to level 50 first before unlocking the EAT. But now that it has been reduced to level 20 and Praetorian content goes to level 20 (And a step higher when we get full access to First Ward) I see no reason for NOT having a PEAT now.

Having said that, I would still love to see others made available first. Rikti for sure, and I would really love to see the Kheld "Family" expanded with Quantum's, Void's & Galaxies. I would also love to see a Longbow HEAT.

... which... has not been the definition of Epic. And never has been. Epic has always = tied to the lore/tied to a story ("Epic" in the sense of "Epic of Gilgamesh.") And shortchanging a PEAT by having its own unique story cut off at 20 would be rather weak.

We really need a new abbreviation, because to my sensibilities, any Praetorian EATs should be called "Nomnoms."

And this is why I will keep plugging for a Rikti EAT, above any others.

The Rikti are cool. They are a unique group, with distinct looks, their own aesthetics and are perhaps one of the biggest columns in the CoH lore. Without them, there would be no Paragon or Rogue Isles as we know them today.

The Rikti also have a huge scope for story, on both Hero AND Villain side;

Hero:

You are a member of the Traditionalists, whether through birth on the Rikti homeworld and either staying true to the Old Ways or defecting at a later date from the Lineage of War, or as a former Primal Human who, through various means, has evolved to new heights.

You value the Old Ways, discussion and thought over the rashness of the Restructurists. Your allegiance is to the Rikti Way, and to the Treaty with mankind, a unity for the greater good. That is not to say you are afraid of getting your hands dirty; sometimes sacrifices must be made.

Villain:

You are a member of the Restructurists, or maybe even a now-Rogue free-agent. Whether a Rikti born or a Lost convert, you threw in your lot with the Lineage of War.

What you do now, though, is up to you. Either follow Hro'Dtohz and his visions for a new Rikti Dominion, where the strong survive and rule, or strike out fully on your own, with your new dreams and vision that are grander than any of them can imagine.

---

And that's not even getting started on the branching ATs. I would suggest Warrior and Mentalist, two distinct ATs with their own unique, and perhaps a common pool, of powers.

Hmm...

I'm just thinking what origin or backstory would be interesting to play.

- Technology would fit great but we already have many cool clockwork toons. Perhaps something else then.
- New Seed of hamidon looks like a gigantic, armoured peacebringer... no. Too similar with old one.
- Super agent. Maybe but not too similar with arachnos. Perhaps no then.
- Scientific experiment Yes I love weird scientific experiments and mad scientists! Perhaps they tried to create new kind of ghouls but accidentally made something totally new. Perhaps some kind of shapeshifter. Not too similar powers with warhsades/peacebringers.

There are so many possibilities. Longbow, Vanguard, Rikti... regardless of what the theme is... I think we can all agree it needs to be versatile.

Personally... I'd like to see a 'mind jumper' kind of deal. Where you can choose to 'posses' a Minion/LT/Boss* and depending on the kind of enemy it is... you gain different powers in your power tray. Functionally I think it could work similarly to the Kheldian transformations.

*Obviously this would have to be limited somewhat, so to avoid allowing someone to take over an AV or Giant Monster/messing with mission objectives.

I was brainstorming with a friend about what we'd like to see, and this is pretty much what we agreed upon:

- Praetorian Devouring Earth Archetype, which has been oft-describe by others already.

- Either the introduction of Epic Powersets allowing us to play Force Control / Pulse Assault Praetorian Police Dominators, or a VEAT-style PPD AT that allowed you to perhaps branch off into IDF or DUST.

- Praetorian Clockwork Archetype, so we can finally have a mecha-AT with fun moving bits that shoot lasers.

An ever-increasing error these days. "Epic", like "ironic", has had its original meaning chewed up and pooped out into a new pop-culture infused shadow of its former purpose. Similar mutilations of the English language include: "Radical", "Awesome", and "Exceptional". All of these, however, are nothing compared to "Irregardless".

Aren't the Rikti supposed to help fight the Coming Storm as well? A REAT would tie in well with that and help explain why so many are allies now.

No, that's not an error. I'm giving the definition of "Epic" related to "Epic AT" provided by the developers. Plus:

epic [ep-ik]
ep·ic   [ep-ik] Show IPA
adjective Also, ep·i·cal.
1. noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style: Homer's Iliad is an epic poem.
2. resembling or suggesting such poetry: an epic novel on the founding of the country.

3. heroic; majestic; impressively great: the epic events of the war.
4. of unusually great size or extent: a crime wave of epic proportions.
noun
5. an epic poem.
6. epic poetry.
7. any composition resembling an epic.
8. something worthy to form the subject of an epic: The defense of the Alamo is an American epic.
9. ( initial capital letter ) Also called Old Ionic. the Greek dialect represented in the Iliad and the Odyssey, apparently Aeolic modified by Ionic.

World English Dictionary
epic (ˈɛpɪk)

— n
1. a long narrative poem recounting in elevated style the deeds of a legendary hero, esp one originating in oral folk tradition
2. the genre of epic poetry
3. any work of literature, film, etc, having heroic deeds for its subject matter or having other qualities associated with the epic: a Hollywood epic
4. an episode in the lives of men in which heroic deeds are performed or attempted: the epic of Scott's expedition to the South Pole

— adj
5. denoting, relating to, or characteristic of an epic or epics
6. of heroic or impressive proportions: an epic voyage

... so I'm not sure what definition *you* are looking at and saying I'm wrong. Seems their definition fits farily well in with this. Now, if I were saying something about Epic ATs having to be "godmode," which some (incorrectly) have said in the past, you'd have a point.
