Edit: and an older thread
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
ATI drivers v11.5-->11.8 have been causing a lot of trouble with the game. See the recent thread.

That sucks...what should I do?
The thread in the tech forum section gives most of the required info.
11.4 has been working fine for me.

Uninstall your drivers, reinstall earlier drivers. It's about all you can do until ATI fixes the issue.
Here are download links for 11.4, which is the last driver that has worked for just about everyone.

Vista / Windows 7 32-bit

Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

Do you know when they released the latest driver? Because maybe they will release a new version soon.

(The 6950 is also the nicest card i've ever owned, but it barely fit into my case. As in a couple millimetre gap between the end of the card and my drive bay.)

Alright I'm on 1.4 now. Hopefully the crashing stops and hopefully a new driver that fixes it will be released soon.
I'm still crashing like once or twice a day, this is ******* pissing me off :|

I'd recommend starting a thread in the Tech Issues forum, linking back to this thread, and including a copy of the logs from CoH Helper and HiJack This. The people that frequent that section generally know their stuff with various tech issues.

One more thing worth mentioning - I'm using the 11.3 drivers, which are stable, and I've been avoiding updating them since, because every single version since then has had problems reported with CoH (though for most people the 11.4 works). Might be worth going one further back.

I'm going to try 11.3. This is ******* pissing me off, I've crashed 3 times, one of which required me to restart my whole ******* computer, within the last 30 minutes.

I crash all the time hoping next patch fixes it. I am on an NVidia GTX 460 and had old drivers and tried new.
In Praetoria I literally crash everytime after exiting a mission. In the normal world I crash about every hour or so.

Ultimus: I know very little about drivers or why they crash, but judging by the error message in that screenshot, you were victim of a memory leak, rather than a crashed driver. That's an issue with the game itself, and has been around for awhile. Here's hoping they can find it and plug it soon.
Also, holy <insert deity here> that's a large screenshot. Maybe shrink it down next time?

1 make sure you used the driver cleaner. If any bit of the previous drivers are still active it will mess with City of.
2. If 11.4 doesn't work , 11.2 should.
3. If you are using windows 7 you should set aero to disable during play (yeah it makes the desktop so plain but it will auto reset afterward). You do this by right clicking the icon you usually use ->properties->open file location.. then find cityofheroes.exe again right click->properties->compatibility-> and uncheck desktop themes and composition.
Technically composition alone should work but if you have some funky icon/widget things going on you want to disable the theme too. City of also prefers to run as admin and will require it to disable the desktop theme (so check that too).
I seem to recall people complaining that the NCLauncher can be a bit of a resource hog if left open. If you haven't already, it might be worth opening the launcher; then File, Settings, and switch the "After launching a game:" dropdown to "Exit Launcher".

Watch the language please. Seriously. Makes you come off as immature.

Anyways 11.3 didn't crash for 2 hours...so hopefully that fixed it.
EDIT: Not...I've crashed 2-3 times today :\

There isn't really anything that can be done to avoid it entirely, but to increase the amount of time between crashes, run as few programs as you can get away with while playing. Use of /unloadgfx after zoning may or may not help. If upgrading system memory is an option, you can do that.
Basically, maximize the amount of system memory the game has available to it. The game, over time, uses more and more system memory, until it reaches the point where there isn't anymore. Then it crashes. This is a flaw in the programming code of the game, so it's on the devs to find the problem and fix it. The more memory your computer has, the longer you can go without running out.

Hopefully that helps.

Ultimus, there is a memory leak in the NCSoft Launcher which could be your problem. Make sure the Launcher closes after launching CoH, to do this run the launcher and click on File and then Settings in the drop down menu. In the General tab make sure both boxes are unchecked and the drop down menu under is set to Exit Launcher.
Hopefully that helps. |
Hey sorry if this is in the wrong section.
So I just recently started playing city of heroes again. I haven't played it since I got my new gfx card (I think) so idk what's going on.
It seems it crashes around 4 times a day, and someone the display driver will fail and recover.
