Wow...that is pretty cool.

Though I can see a rash of car accidents from people watching movies while driving...

I figured by the time these become mainstream, self-driving cars will be available as well.

And if they are not, we will bloody well keep crashing until they realise its what is needed!

Wow!

I always love how Science Fiction gets the ideas in advance of the reality, but this is sooooo close to what they use in Torchwood, it's uncanny!

Makes you wonder if they knew about it, or did the makers of these watch Torchwood? Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

We built this city on Rock and Roll!

The first thing that came to mind for me was the book Rainbow's End to be honest. There's been a lot of these new crazy tech advances lately that remind me of it to be honest.

Augmented reality as a concept is awesome. as a fact... Totally strange.

...either that, or Jack left his naughty Tumblr feed open in Safari the last time he wore them. (It'd have to be Safari, seeing as how they're eyePhones.)

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

I'd pay for it just so I could have a health bar floating in the top left corner of my vision.

Oh, oh... how about options? Different styles of health bars, ammo counters, shield and XP gauges.

What if you could hook it up to your phone's GPS and have your own mini-map?

I'm aware of the Torchwood reference here but I prefer to think this was inspired by Futurama's eyePhone myself.

I seem to recall hearing these being predicted at least ten years back, but I can't recall where.

Just for this, I LOVE this idea! I get lost so easily sometimes. It's pretty sad. Especially when you consider the fact that I've lived in the same city for as long as I can remember.

Well this was one of those technologies that was fairly likely bound to happen eventually. Ten years ago we may not have known -when- it was going to hit, but clearly the elements to make it possible were on the horizon and it's a fairly logical progression of the HUD concept.

But I predict, like SilverSablinova mentioned, that a lot of people are going to get themselves into various "accidents" trying to use these things whether they are driving cars or just walking down the street.

A co-worker told me just last night he saw a guy driving down the street on a motorcycle and texting at the same time... I'm sure there will be accidents!

Define "real".

So far, they've implanted *one* led. Just a pinpoint of light.

The photos you see in the article are photoshopped design concepts.

It would be like having a piston in a laboratory turn over once proving the concept of the combustion engine and writing an article about it with a picture of a Ferrari.

Soooo.... very early proof of concept stage.

That's called 'looking for investors' and it's a time-honored tradition.

I never assumed we could run down to Best Buy and buy a pair of these tomorrow.
But I'd be surprised if it takes more than say 5 years before some version of these become retail-level technology.

I'll define real as in "this is in a lab" and not just some crack-pot spouting loose claims of proof. [see: Is This Guy for Real thread for reference]

And yes, I'm completely aware that the photos are only there for aesthetics, as they are credited to whomever created the concept art. I'm not trying to imply that this article is talking about a real product just days away from being in your local store awaiting your purchase. But placing an LED onto a contact lens is an incredible and plausible step towards the goal they have.

Now stop poopooing on the SCIENCE!

In a couple of the supplements there've been more consumer-grade stuff like contacts.
