The sad thing is we know what will most likely be watched.

That's sad.

Lead researcher Babak Parvis comments “You won’t necessarily have to shift your focus to see the image generated by the contact lens,” it would just appear in front of you and your view of the real world will be completely unobstructed when the display is turned off.
...And completely obstructed when it's turned on. I don't see this ending well, as cool as it might be.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

But I'd be surprised if it takes more than say 5 years before some version of these become retail-level technology.
I think in 5 years you'd be more likely to see some sort of military application of this. Consumer-level technology would come afterwards.

I talked about these years ago... on this forum... good to know they've made some progress since the thing on tv about them

Imagine someone cracking into the controller for these things and pulling a "funny" at inconvenient times.

Like when you're driving down the road...

Yeah. The concept is cool, but the implementation could be dangerous as hell.

It would be both funny and tragic the first time someone got rickroll'd to death.

Ah, more "now you can communicate more instantly!" technology ... meaning more ways for your job, or those Evil Marketing People everyone's always complaining about, or just those annoying people on the internet, to follow you everywhere! Futurama's EyePhone indeed.

Regardless of how rocky the start of something like this is, by the time they manage to display an image reliably, you can bet that you'll be expect to own and use one or get left behind by work and friends. Even if, like me, contacts in general give you a huge "ick" sensation just thinking about them.

Works for me. I never really got much beyond the novels and the main sourcebook when I was spending a lot of money on pen and paper RPGs. At the time I was more into Dark Sun and 2e D&D and the ease at which your character could die in Shadowrun at the time really kept me from getting into the characters much.

Yeah, fourth edition Shadowrun is all over Augmented Reality. In game lore they made a breakthrough that allowed electrodes (stylish and subtle, not a medical node cap) to be just as efficient as datajacks for day to day use. Combined with the magic of wifi people are surfing all the time, overlaying the matrix with reality via contacts or glasses.

(Which ultimately meant that there's floating virtual construct advertising billboards everywhere you look.)

They are cautionary tales.

So it's a 4th edition thing and not from earlier then? So its 2005 trumps Rainbow's End's publication date of 2007. If you like the whole Augmented Reality thing you should read the book though. It did a whole heck of a lot with that sort of AR.

One application I think may be cool for use with vehicles (assuming it's handled properly), having them work with GPS roadmap devices. Example, the GPS says that I need to make a right turn ahead. The augmented reality paints an arrow on the road (if implemented properly, being intelligent enough that it doesn't obstruct cars ahead of you) so that I also have a visual indication of where I need to turn. This way, you wouldn't have to take your eyes off the road for an occasional glance at the GPS display... it'd all be displayed on the road in front of you.

I agree that things like this are usually driven by military applications before purely civilian ones. But considering how many overly hyper people we have today who are willing to toss $600+ on iPads I figure that even in as little as 5 years there'll be at least some who'll be so excited by this tech that they'll throw out thousands of dollars to get even initial/limited retail versions.

Camera technology has to improve more still... for just about any application that you guys are thinking of. To make it work right you need to have cameras implanted or stationed near the lens otherwise you can't project the image properly.
