Totally different as a free character rename as I see it.
You have to move the character over to another server, so maybe you lost your SG, TF channels, etc...
And maybe when you back on next month your new shiny name is already taken

12 more character slots

As far as names getting taken SpaceNut is right on the money with that. Just make a placeholder toon to reserve the name you want until next month.
I thought I saw somewhere that it was a 'use it or lose it' server transfer, inferring no stacking. Then again the overview page wasn't specific on the stackablity of the perk. I could be mistaken and VIPs can have as many transfers available as they wish

They have unequivocally said that they will stack.
So, month by month, I can transfer my characters to the new 10-year-old free server? Awesome!

He demands that revenge is taken on these miscreants and his powers are returned! You look like just the villain for the job. Challenging.
Would still prefer a choice of things of equal paragon store pricing for our extra monthly bonus. Whether that's one item equal to the price or a bunch of items equal to the price. Personally, I can see myself with dozens of unused character transfers because I have no reason to transfer; I always get the name I want and I'm happy in Defiant.
Yeah Character transfers are fairly useless for the way I play.
Respecs would be a nice alternative.
I'm gonna move all my toons to Freedom Server, go to Atlas Park and farm broadcasts!

I want to be able to transfer a Brute on Freedom to Virtue, I hate the name I made for him the first time AND the brute in question has a better chance at being in character than I'd ever get on Freedom.
One free transfer a month might mean the end of free transfers events!

This alone will make respec'n a lot easier..well when your emptying a toon that is.

It's so cute when a new player thinks he or she has figured out an exploit that everyone else has known about for years.
Yes we all know how we can get a free rename token using server transfers.
And using free server transfers to get the rename tokens isn't a new idea either. We had a over a month of free server transfers during the 2009-2010 Winter Event and another week of free transfers the first week Going Rogue went live in Aug 2010.

When I tried to do this last time we got free transfers, the game just added a # to the end of my toon's name. I was not able to get a name change out of it.

Until you log in, the old name + # is their name. That's just there as a temporary placeholder. But, when you log into the game, they'll let you change it instead of keeping that as their name.
