Radiation/Mental Manipulation too much AOE?
Maybe Irradiate, but I would not drop Psychic wail.
I would drop Psychic scream before Psychic wail. I hate that long animation to activate the power.
There's no such thing as too much AoE. Though if you're intent on getting rid of one I'd probably drop Psychic Scream, cause it's got the longest animation time and doesn't really do enough damage to keep it's DPA up with the other AoEs.
(also nitpick: Psychic Wail is the Psi Blast Nuke. Psychic Shockwave is the power you're meaning.)
psy scream should be looked at as much a control power as a blast power. -50 rech for 10 seconds. IMO, it's an awesome power.
OK, I have a 38 Rad/MM that I am starting to feel like has too much AOE so I am considering dropping Psychic Wail and Irradiate. Is this a huge mistake? I mean after all I'll still have Electron Haze, Psychic Scream, and Neutron Bomb.
What do you all think? |
If you were to keep either Irradiate or Psychic Shockwave, I would choose Irradiate, I prefer the larger AoE and shorter cast time to the -recharge and chance for stun.
Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.
I have a level 50 rad/mm and he's an AoE machine, but also has a solid selection of single-target attacks, so he's well-rounded.
Edit: One of the above posters mentions that most of the AoE attacks require you to enter melee range, which is very true. Just keep that in mind when you need to let loose a long chain of AoE attacks. Pop some purples or stick close to the tank.
I really like Rad/MM, it's one of the better Blappers out there. If you go close range, getting enough recharge to chain Irradiate-PSW-Neutron Bomb isn't possible, so there's not too much AoE going on.

hmmmm... Slot a Fury of the Gladiator (Chance for -Res) and a Achilles' Heel (Chance for Resistance Debuff) in Irradiate makes a nice resistance debuffer on top of the -defense in the primary. So a Rad/MM has -defense, -recovery, -regen, - recharge, and can have -resist. It sounds like I have a double xp project.

Irradiate is so much better than PSW. I'd go as far as calling it one of the main reasons to go rad/ in the first place. Ignoring every other thing about both of them, irradiate is energy and PSW is psi. There are a lot more things that highly resist psi than energy, and there are fewer things that are weak to psi than to energy.
That said, I'd actually consider dropping both of the cones and keeping irradiate and PSW, depending on your feelings about being mainly pbaoe.
I have seven.. thats right seven AoE.. i took em all.. plus one in the Epic Pool... amd if there was 8.... id have that too...

Electron Haze and Psychic Scream are nearly identical in cast time.

Not that big of a deal, what the real issue between the two is, is that EH deals 1.35scale damage, where PS deals only 1.04scale damage, so EH deals more damage for the time you spend animating it. Yes Psi Scream recharges faster, but that just means you're going to spend even more time locked in it's animation.
It's not so much that Psi Scream has a long(ish) animation (it has the same animation as many other cones) it's that it has a long(ish) animation combined with middling damage.
Drop the crash nuke and keep all the rest. I find the Neutron Bomb feels slowest to me. With nifty recharge you will have an unbroken PBAoE Chain (just target the Neutron Bomb on you feet) and can slip in the Cones with a little positioning. You will still have all 3 ST attacks too.
Zev needs a respec and an Apocalypse and maybe an Armageddon, plus a switch to Scorpion Shield, but this is pretty much his in-game build today. That build paid for everything else I had until I got a tank to Farming quality. It worked, just slower, even before Spiritual Alpha.

Wouldn't you know it, this thread got me thinking and now my rad/mm is level 31. The plan so far is to stick with irradiate, neutron bomb and psychic shockwave. The cones were very handy in the low levels but it didn't take long for their different sizes to clash annoyingly. Neutron bomb is allegedly a 1.67 second animation but I swear it's actually 2.67 given how ponderous it feels. That aside, this is clearly a solid combo! As the ranged defense builds up, it can only improve from there.

Too much AoE? This does not compute.

I just rolled a Rad/MM character. Does anyone who uses this combo have any builds that they could post??

Like a complete nimrod I slotted a GSFC when I already had five 2.5% ranged defense bonuses, unaware that it counted as three separate bonuses and not one unique bonus. The risks of not using mids. Here's another at-risk demographic, your eyesight: http://i.imgur.com/5cJjI.jpg
I have no idea what your goal is but I've been enjoying this character so much I feel compelled to share. Once I drop the GSFC for trap of the hunter in subdual I'll be range softcapped. Haven't really been keeping track but I believe it cost less than one billion. The basic strategy, approaching an un-aggroed blob, is to BU or aim, neutron bomb while in the air, land in the spawn and start hammering them with pbaoes. I'd be lying if I said I never died but I'd also be lying if I said it happened with any regularity. Priorities have been to grab all the passive accolades, get spiritual alpha to tier 3 (and next week tier 4), and to focus internally on impressing the hell out of pugs. So far it has been working quite well. This will hopefully end up being a good speed TFing character but you never know eh?
I guess I should state what I'm looking for. I'm more looking at Ranged Defense/Recharge. Not looking to be some farmer (I have a fire/shield scrapper that does that very well if needed) but more just looking for a solid character that won't faceplant on every mob during an iTrial or TF and provide a good amount of Damage.

Who said that was a farming build? It has ranged defense, recharge, and damage regardless of what you're running.

If you're really in a power crunch and have to drop powers, it might be helpful to pick either melee or ranged and specialize for that.
In melee, Electron Haze and Psychic Scream are unwieldy to use. Proton Volley is also iffy.
At range, Irradiate and Psychic Shockwave don't do you much good. Mind Probe and Telekinetic Thrust are also iffy.
Neutron Bomb works both ways. It's animation time isn't that bad (Irradiate just makes everything else look slow). And its debuff duration is decent. Taking things like debuff magnitude, duration, target cap, and recharge time all into account, I'd say Neutron Bomb is the best debuff power in the set unless you have ridiculous amounts of recharge bonuses to perma Irradiate.
I have a Level 50 Rad/MM. I can agree that with enough recharge, all that AoE is completely unnecessary. I originally had Irradiate, Electron Haze, Neutron Bomb, and Psychic Shockwave as my AoE abilities. This worked out quite well, though I eventually stopped using Electron Haze due to the long animation and low damage. I dropped it for Proton Volley, specifically for the set bonuses from Sting of the Manticore. I can have a steady rotation of Neutron Bomb > Irradiate > Psychic Shockwave without trouble, aside from the typical "OHGODI'MSOSQUISHYDON'TKILLME" ordeal.
I also have enough powers to form a strong single-target rotation, consisting of Neutrino Bolt, X-Ray Beam, Cosmic Burst, and Knockout Blow (from Leviathan Mastery). I have Achilles' Heel procs in all of my Rad attacks besides Proton Volley (because it's just an IO mule), and stacking on top of Reactive, it's just ungodly. Easily my favorite toon to play despite the obvious drawbacks of being a glass cannon.
