Old or "Classic" costume pieces
Usually it has to do with certain pieces being renamed or moved to a different section. The only costume piece that I know of that's been completely removed are the "Malaise" pants. Search around in the tailor, and you should be able to find everything again.

This guy has both:
... but can never take that outfit to the tailor (no matter how much it needs it.)
Depending on how old the "old" costumes are, the various skirts and suit jackets will have vanished from the character model while in the tailor (from the I5-ish era remake, as well as various reorganizations since then.) Fortunately, we also tended to get a *lot* of free costume change tokens....
If it's been a fair while, I'd say take a screenshot (outside of the tailor) and reference it when remaking the costume.

Also, from what I recall, if you do find the old piece renamed, the cost to change is 0. It just doesn't find itself automatically.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
The "elf" ears are close (but not the same :/) to the pointy ears - ears are now a option like which face, etc - not a Mask/Half Helmet/Helmet/etc level option.
There are also a few others that now operate differently (Metallic for example) for those with Ultramode turned on - as I recall that was done in such a way that it is changed for you even without a trip to the tailor.

This reminds me of the old skirt bug that happened a few years ago.. And one day I ran into a dude who still had their bugged skirt-costume in play. They chose the slitted-sides, but due to the bug, the front and back of the skirt were slitted and it looked pretty cool.
I asked them about it and they said "ya, Ive been keeping this costume ever since the bug was fixed, but can never change it in the tailor xD"

Frankly, I hate the way the uber-shininess looks on some pieces (Tech Sleek, I believe, is the one I'm thinking of. if I could just get back the not-so-shiny... the really reflective version tends to look worse, IMHO.)

The transparent torso bug was great for a ghostly character and a few other concepts. Stone Armor brute with transparent torso looks really good, for example.

Only sometimes. Most of the time if a section has been reorganized you'll have to pay full price or use a token to restore the piece. The most recent example that comes to mind is when variant versions of the cat and wolf tails were added.

It would make my year if they went back to ALL the metal pieces in the game and re did the metallic portions. Not only that, if they re-did them in Matte, Shiny, and Rusty/Abused, and left in a Legacy version, it would be like they gave us a whole new range of all new pieces.
It's something I'm hoping to make them understand someday. They could get a huge amount of mileage out of the hours it takes them to look at all the old pieces and apply some new tricks in a comprehensive and consistent fashion.
I know it's apparently difficult for them to go back and edit things done in the older versions of their software, and from experience I know it's difficult to replicate and/or modify the work someone else did when you don't have them to consult because they're not with the company any more. In the end I accept that my desire probably isn't realistic. However, I still think it would make a lot of people pretty happy.

I am assuming you mean in Beta, since the character I created a few days after launch didn't have that particular look. His current costume in slot 1 hasn't changed since they added auras, since I am not sure the parts to recreate it are in the system anymore. And I don't like the looks of the newer suit jackets much.
|
I mocked up a character wearing it once, with the lower sleeves set to white. I guess I must have known that seven years later I'd have to prove that such a thing had once existed.
This is actually on the edge of one of my biggest peeves with the costume system. Texture and Color inconsistency. If you look at the whole array of parts, there are actually nearly a half dozen different "metallic" sheens done at different times and in different ways (and that's not even counting some of the NPC used metal looks that we flat out don't have *cough* Nemesis). Since they were done differently, they tend to not look good together, and they tend to end up with markedly different color palette ranges.

Like me. I actually do like the very shiny "Tech Sleek", but I've had no luck finding a helmet option that's equally shiny (and a lot of trouble with even similar/complementary).

Photon, I think you are misremembering. The "spandex man's suit" top still needed to use the Sleeves version of the gloves to look correct and since that's a separate piece, it has it's own colors.
However there are several pieces where the primary/secondary are swapped between the top and bottom. It could be possible that was also the case with the "Sleeves" and the "suit".
I would check but all of my characters that used those pieces from 2004 have been upgraded to use the new shirt/tie + jacket parts.

Nope, I wasn't in the City of Heroes beta. I'd never heard of the game until a month or two after it went live. (According to NCsoft's account management widget my game account was created in May 2004.) The one I'm talking about was that way until... I forget when they added the first batch of those other jackets. At least the first couple of Issues. Though I did misstate how the color selection worked above. Color 1 was the jacket and tie, Color 2 was the shirt; the lower sleeves were a separate part, like Gloves etc., that could be set to a different color from the rest of the jacket for no evident reason.

I've been away for a while and want to update some old costumes, but noting too radical. But when I go to the tailor and log in the selected costume looks very different, as though pieces are missing. Is this due to certain costume pieces being removed? Are their new versions?
Cheers!
