Ghost Story
Most of the public libraries don't have their copies circulating yet, so I haven't had a chance to read it. Took me six blasted months to get the last one, so it could be a while
Goodbye, I guess.

Hmm yes. A non spoilery summary. Changes tore Harry down to his foundations and ripped them up too. Ghost Story saw him rebuilding those foundations firmer and better I think.

Thanks for the thread, Doc! I only recently got into the Dresden files after my brother loaned me a few, but I'm hooked! I'll be picking a copy up tomorrow after work.
Glad to hear it's not the end of the series either.

Didn't he indicate he's roughly in the middle of it?
That said, while there were a few too many "HEY, CLUE HERE!" moments for my liking, it didn't stop me from devouring the book in a night.
This is only the middle of the series. It is planned to go out to book 23 or so and end in a massive apocalyptic trilogy.
Never planned to end it at Changes that was almost the exact middle of the series.
There is a reason Jim had to tear Harry down like that so he could rebuild him again. The Harry Dresden through the end of Changes is both an angry young man and an angry young wizard. He draws strength from the anger and tends to have righteous anger but it is still based in anger.
Ghost Story gives him a chance to look at that aspect and start changing his behavior from damn the consequences full steam ahead to now he will likely stop to consider the secondary effects of what he does. This doesn't mean he won't charge ahead but he isn't likely to do it as blindly in the future as he did in the past.
In other words he has gained a bit of maturity and control over the anger that drove him. Which is one of the keys of what happens in Ghost Story, his nose is kind of rubbed in consequences of acting without considering them.
If he hadn't grown he could have skipped this book and we could have gone straight from changes to Cold Days the next book. But I think what happens in Ghost Story is very important to his growth. So that the Harry Dresden that will be in Cold Days isn't the Harry Dresden from the end of Changes.

Still waiting for my copy to be delivered. Stupid Amazon.
The latest Dresden Files book came out Tuesday. I finished it yesterday.
I'm surprised there's not been a thread yet here. No spoilers, though I will comment that there was something in the book that made it pretty obvious that Butcher does play CoH. Good book, and not the end of the series. |
He said that he plans "about" 20 total Dresden novels, not counting the short stories. He loves superheroes, and mentioned he just finished watching the Avengers cartoon series on NetFlix.
Ideally, the tank will die precisely as everyone else starts fighting, allowing aggro to be spread evenly among the blaster. -seebs, "How to Suck at CoH/CoV" Guide
What I'm most interested in for the next book will be how he deals with the supporting cast. There's quite the can of worms right there.
Too many alts to list.

Remember Jim Butcher has a 24 book arc in this and he already has mentioned the titles of the final 3 novels. Starting with Ghost Story we are starting the new story arc.
I liked Ghost Story (which takes place after the final story in Side Jobs) it revealed a lot of Harry to us the fans and to the character itself. A lot of interesting changes and surprises of many of our favorite supporting characters. We discover more of Jim Butcher's version of Chicago than we thought.
This is an aftermath book with what happened with Changes next up now the story is going to get interesting.
The new Monster Hunters Inc. came out the same day. I will be reading Ghost Story this week. It is good to hear that it was good.

Why would you think this is the end of the series? Butcher on his own site said his publisher was scared he was ending the series at the end of Changes!

Then again, it's pretty apparent that Butcher is an old PnP RPG kind of guy so I should be used to the concept of death being mostly an inconvenience.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this thread before going to bed. Reminded me that I just got the book two days ago. No sleep for me it looks like!

Just finished it. I enjoyed it, and as with the rest of the series, I am now lacking sleep.
No one pays attention to me, cause I listen to the voices in my head.
Enjoyed the new novel and I also picked up the Dresden Files RPG. I love the commentary in the margins between Harry, Billy, and Bob. They have me constantly laughing.

I played what originally was going to be a shinto-Greek flavored ghost-whisperer but when our sorcerer went AWOL turned into a full out wizard...
I had...warden issues....not the least of which being that none of them would soulgaze me to prove that I WASN'T a warlock and stuff kept happening with my character's brother making it look like I had an army of yakuza mooks at my beck....annoying
