True Blood, Season 4
Ok, the fairy business is starting to confuse me, the way they've played with it this season it seems they're going to be a major focus of S5.
-Jesus, I liked him, but I saw it coming.
-I don't really notice women often, but damn Jessica was hot.
-Holy crap Tara. A part of me wants her to be made into a vampire, just because with her character development it'd be interesting from a dramatic standpoint.
-Debbie had it comin', she only had herself to blaaame.
-I vote the werewolf was Marcus.
-Yay Russell is back, fantastic character.
-Steve Newlin as a vampire, I blame Russell, should be fun for next season.
-Rene's warning got me curious, is his ghost just fooling with Arlene, or does Terry have some serious skeletons in his closet. His friend looked really disappointed when Terry said he was married(in an unexpected roadblock kind of way, not that way).
-Nan's death scene was awesome, looked more than a little planned by Bill and Eric if you ask me.
50Soulsunder: DM/Regen Scrapper
50Limitshift: EM/WP Brute
Victoria Nox: Dark/Dark Dominator
And about 5 others that change constantly...
Aside from the entire Fairy plot being dropped along with the Panther hybrid Jason never coming forth I enjoyed this season and I can say everyone that died outside of Jesus I was glad to see die.
Honestly though what the hell was the point of those Fairy and Panther episodes if the plots were both just..dropped.
Standard spoiler warning......
Apparently a vampire finally got a hold of him.
The fact that they didn't kill him outright almost guaranteed that he was available to make a comeback.
She was a contant threat to Bill throughout the whole season.
She was going to have to be "handled" one way or the other.
This was probably the most shocking shock of the episode. While it's true Tara was never much of a character in the books they had made her basically one of the core characters of the TV show. At this point it'd just be cheesy if they just "saved" her at the beginning of next season so they pretty much have to let her be dead for real. I'm guessing she'll make at least several ghost appearances via Lafayette.
I thought it was interesting that, just like Sookie's Gran said, at the final moment of death Sookie was all alone with Tara.
This was the -least- surprising shock of the episode since putting a shotgun to Debbie's face was pretty much exactly how Sookie killed Debbie in the books. For me I was never really wondering -if- that was going to happen but -when- it was going to happen.
Yeah Jesus dying was sad. But it provides some tragic drama for Lafayette and like Tara he'll probably be back fairly often as a ghost.
And once again Pam steals the show with her line about Sookie and her Fairy @#%^#@.
|
She's still one of my favorite characters in either the books or the TV show.
Wow. Fun episode. Who was the wolf that confronted Sam? I thought it was Debbie at first but I somehow doubt she "dealt" with Sam and then made it to Sookie's.

A mild prediction on the werewolf at Sam's. I think it might have been Emma. It's a bit of a stretch but it ties to her line in the episode when Arlene asked her what she was (for Halloween) she said "Either a shifter or a werewolf like my Daddy". Something tells me next season they'll cut to the wolf stopping growling and licking Sam and then reveal its her.

If it is Emma, wouldn't she look more like a wolf cub? That was clearly an adult wolf there.
|
BUT what if she's actually a shifter, then she should be able to shift into any animal, and there I'd assume she can make it look however she wants, in which case she'd make it look just like Daddy (full grown). Shot in the dark, I realize.

It'd be an interesting twist if that wolf was Emma, but even if it was I don't think she'd be all "scary and snarly" with Sam, even if she was trying to surprise him for Halloween. Besides she might still be a bit too young to shift anyway - I might be wrong but I think the Stackhouse books established that people can't shift until they hit puberty.
Of course her dealing with learning how the whole shifting thing works might be a topic for next season.

All I could say was GOOD RIDDANCE. Tara dying is the best thing to happen in the show since ever. Sad about Jesus, Lafayette and Jesus were the best romance on the damn show bar none.
Sorry, folks, was out of town for almost two weeks, and during that trip I actually got around to reading the fourth Sookie Stackhouse book that this season is based on. I'll post a recap after I grab something to eat.

Some bookish spoliers...
As far as the TV show being "based" on the Sookie Stackhouse novels I think you'll agree (assuming you've read at least the first four books) that as time goes on the TV show has definitely skewed farther and farther away from the books. Just about the only thing the 4th season used from the 4th book was the generic "witch war" plotline, and even that was significantly different in the book. In the book the witches involved were ALSO themselves werewolves AND V-addicts.
As it turns out much of the storyline for the 3rd and 4th seasons of the TV show has actually borrowed bits and pieces of the later Stackhouse novels. Things like Jason's Hotshot/werepanther story and all the Fairy stuff didn't really get started until like the 6th or 7th book.
I think since the TV show has spun off so far from the books it's going to be pretty hard for any further TV seasons to be clearly connected to a specific single book. Even the author of the books (Charlaine Harris) has supposedly said she likes the TV show mostly because even she doesn't know what to expect of it week-to-week.

Book spoilers below..................
Actually Lothic, it is Book 4 where Jason is kidnapped and bitten (and rescued by Sookie and Sam) and Book 5 where he changes. Where the show really made a difference besides the obvious is actually starting the story during season three, given that Jason was almost completely absent from the third book they had to give him something to do I guess and stretched it through this season, and I'm guessing even into the next.

In any event the TV show introduced the whole Jason/Hotshot thing earlier than the books, probably like you said to give Jason something to do in the 3rd season. And it looks like according to a brief review of the wiki the Fairy plotline didn't get seriously covered (except for mentions of Claudine and clues from Andre) until all the way into the 8th book.
I agree that the TV show was fairly close to the books during the first two seasons. But I think my point still stands (despite the details) that I doubt that any future seasons of the show will be able to be tied directly one-to-one to a particular book now that they've started to cherry pick plotlines from many of the later books. Let's just say if Quinn doesn't make an appearance by the end of season 5 then all bets are off.

Personally I think the show has improved a lot of some of the weaker aspects of the books (much of the credit goes to the cast) and I've found very few things that I truely don't like compared to the books. The only thing, off the top of my head, is I think they've tried too hard to make Sam's character dark. Sure it's making him a bit more three dimensional, but the whole point of Sam's character (as with his personal go-to animal to shift to) is his man's best friend-like loyalty and goodness. And even that is minor really.
No, it's not a show for the dyed in the wool canon-ite. But I think it hits so many notes, so right, that the differences can be overlooked and even enjoyed. I'm not holding out hope, but given her 'break up' with Bill and Eric it would be great to see Quinn next season. My guess is we'll get some version of the charcter and I wouldn't be too surprised if it turns out to be Scott Foley's character. (Old Iraq war vet is much more interesting than party planner to the supes community)

Plus, I think it would be very very difficult finding someone that looks like the books describe Quinn and actually act.

I didn't even think to consider that Terry's war buddy might serve as the "re-imagined Quinn" character in the TV show next season. I agree that if they do try to shoehorn a Quinn-like character into the show he's probably going to have to be a fairly modified version of the book character. Might as well make him a big manly-man Iraqi war vet sergeant.

You know this just struck me while I was thinking about the show. I wonder if Bill and Eric were tipped off and were acting on behalf of the Authority given that Nan had quit and was trying to usurp their power with a new faction. They kind of eyed each other when she entered like they were up to something.
|
She knew the Authority was going to track her down so I think she just decided to either desperately try to get Bill to help her go rogue or go down in a blaze of glory taking Bill out if he decided to be loyal to the Authority. I don't think she counted on Eric being there let alone siding with Bill.
Basically I think Bill and Eric knew they had Nan cornered and cut off from any support she might have had from the Authority so they just took advantage of the situation by removing her from the equation. My guess is that they figured even if she was going to turn against the Authority that they couldn't trust her anyway so it was better to deal with the "loose end" than to let her go. Maybe by taking care of Nan they hope to placate the Authority for a while so they can figure out what to do about the "disloyal faction" Nan was talking about.
Either way it should be fun to see what comes of it next season.

Very possible, but even if they weren't acting on behalf of the Authority initially, they can use their act to gain favor with them. You know how Vamps love their politics.

I figure that Bill and Eric did not know what to do with Nan until she threatened Sookie. I was expecting the season to end with the Harem ending for Sookie.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
