So, if it were up to you...
The only non melee (not scrapper, brute, or stalker) toons I have ever played past 30 were a DP/EM blaster and an Archery/Fire Blaster. I just like to beat on stuff.

I really enjoy my DP/traps defender... I bring something completely different to a team then my scrappers (mostly debuffs and a big +defense buff)... but in terms of play style, he's pretty similar... I can still open a fight... I still go into melee to use my powers... and I still get to do a lot of attacking. And very importantly, he has status protection.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
Squishy recommendations, huh?
I dig my corruptors. The damage is good. The mitigation is good. That's what we all love, right?
I've got a dp/storm and a dark/rad that I swap between regularly. I just rebuilt Hellbird as a... I think fire/pain, but it may have been fire/dark.
I dig cors because the have the mitigation blasters don't get and the damage output that defenders don't get. It's a damn fine mix.
Be well, people of CoH.
Warshade, though it is possibly my least "squishy" character. Very difficult to play, but absolute monstrosity when played and built well.

Blasters do their best damage in melee, so a blapper styled blaster may work. I like my Ice/ice blaster a lot and will likely be my first blaster to 50. A variation of this would be a dom since their bigger attacks are in melee as well, but they get raned attacks and controls and dom mode refills their end and helps them fight against being mezzed. Which one depends on what kind of play style you want. Mind/fire can be done vastly at range. Elec/stone will be right up front.
The defender AT is the one I know the best. Melee based squishy is best done on a Kin. With the new AoE buffs coming, it will be a lot easier to play a Kin. If you like faster sets like Claws, Kin might be right up your alley. I would go Fire/kin corr though. Ice/kin if you want to be safer. Dark is really good for being effective and low maintenance. /sonic and /ice are the two best defender secondaries although I like /dark with debuff sets and all the more so with ones that don't have a heal since /dark gets a blast/heal power. Since I have sworn off making defenders outside of the hardcore SG, I need to break down and make a Dark/traps. There's just a lot of potential with procs in that build. Biggest advantage of going corr for me is not only scourge, but you have Fire as an option. If you really want a ranged option, TA/a and then remind yourself, yes, you actually are defending as you sit back and just shoot arrows.
Plant/storm and Earth/storm are my favorite rids to 50 for controllers. My Ill/rad is right behind them and it's level of power is certainly not incorrectly advertised. The usual suspects for secondaries work for controllers. Besides the three, I would add in Mind control for fun primaries. I'm still undecided on Fire. Ice and Grav are ok.

I've made the character less squishy and now she has perma-Status protection. Plus, the animations look great! Oh hell yes!

Samuel_Tow: Your avatar is... I think I like it
I'd recommend:
Huntsman
Crab
Fortunata, although I prefer Melee Fortunata over Ranged/Control Fortunata.
Traps / Dark
Traps / Ice
Fire Blast / Traps
Fire Blast / Dark
Fire Blast / Rad
My Mains are currently: Huntsman (Armored Blaster), Crab (Ranged Tank), Melee Fortunata (Scraptroller), Traps/Dark (Tankfender)
It is up to me, and I play everything. Non-melee characters that I have at 50 include a Warshade, a fire/fire blaster, a dual pistols/devices blaster (ugh!), an illusion/rad troller, a force field/energy defender, a dark/arrow defender and... well, I think that's it, but I also have 3 other defenders at 45+ and am working on my corr and dom... oh and a bots/dark MM at 45 also.
But if I only got one choice... I'd probably pick a corr, or possibly a dom. Though I do like my Warshade a lot.
my lil RWZ Challenge vid
Dual Pistols / Dark Miasma Corruptor.
For a few reasons:
1. Dark Miasma does a lot of mitigation. Open up with Fearsome Stare, lay down a Tar Patch, and go to town on a buffet of baddies.
2. It's all debuffs, so no buffing your teammates every 90 seconds.
3. Hail of Bullets is a crashless PbAoE nuke, meaning you have to be in melee range. Which I find myself being in a lot by habit. So might as well make the most of it! Plus, it's sexy.
It's pretty dang win, and you contribute a lot to teams with your debuffs.

I've started up a Ninja MM, a Dark Corr and an Electric Dom within the last few months... They're each a whole different world from my usual tanks, scraps and stalkers. Fun, yes. But very, very different.
The mastermind in particular has been an interesting challenge, since I have to have her close enough to the fight to keep her minions bubbled, while still staying out of the way enough not to get clobbered. It really goes against my melee-player instincts to wade in and not wail on everything myself.
@Brightfires - @Talisander
That chick what plays the bird-things...
When I don't play melee, I like Blasters. I didn't like my Dominator, even if I somehow got to 50. I didn't care for Warshades or Peacebringers, though I never got one to a high level. I've never even tried a Defender or Controller. I might like Corrupters, but haven't rolled one yet. I can't see playing a Mastermind - I hate the AI enough already.

My favourites so far:
Earth/* controller. So much control, so little damage. I paired it with /Thermal so I could pretty much do everything.
Nrg/Nrg blaster. Like a hot knife through butter. Hard hitting single target focus with hover and range soft-cap. Medicine Pool for healing. This build did a bit of everything and did it all well.
Trick Arrow/Archery. Keep busy without having to worry about team mates or enemies. Oil Slick Arrow has to be seen. Not as survivable as traps, but I prefer it more since everything is at range. My personal suggestion for getting into 'support' without really needing to 'support' anyone.
I've got it narrowed down to a corr (either fire/dark, or ice/cold) a mm (thugs/dm or necro/dm) or a VEAT. Thanks for everyones input, anything else on the matter may be helpful still.
Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?
Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?
When it comes to non-melee toons, I just can't do the ranged attacks, because you look silly firing them in melee, which you do end up in on occasion, even more so if you're a blaster.
My most enjoyable non-meleer has to be my bots/traps MM. I go from letting the tab key telling me who to smash to total tactical placement and targeting priorities. Bots are probably a little hands off, since they're incredibly survivable, but traps is just active enough for that play-style. Also, no frakking buffing allies.
Outside of Scraps, Brutes and Tanks.... the highest I've gotten was a 42 level Grav/Emp of all things...
So if it were up to me... it would probably be my Claws/Regen played at range....
I dig cors because the have the mitigation blasters don't get and the damage output that defenders don't get.

My only non-melee character is probably the best support combination in the game. Healing is worthless if you can't out-heal damage, so mitigation buffs (defense buffs) are needed. DPS is nothing if you can't beat regen, so regen debuffs are needed. Tanks are nothing if they die to the AV, so damage debuffs are crucial. The AV dies slow normally, so damage buffs or resistance debuffs are important. The set that has the most resistance debuffs while providing defense buffs and an amazing multi-debuff is Cold Domination. Pair it with Sonic Assault and everyone on your team will be hitting for double of what they currently do. No other combination can debuff resistance that well. No other combination can debuff resistance while buffing the team's defense. No other powerset has anything as powerful as Benumb, which can almost negate an AV's unstoppable.
The upcoming patch will make it easier than ever for bubblers or kinetics players to hand out their best buffs.

The next thing on my list of alts to roll is Sonic/Trick corruptor. Even with redraw, it hardly seems fair to the critters.

Warshade, any MM though i particualrly like ninja and demon.i think i have a fortuna around 31 too.
This is a misconception. I don't feel like going into detail on the math, but Corrupter and Defender damage is about the same, for the most part. |
Energy Blast chain:
Burst, Bolt, Blast, Bolt, repeat
Corruptor Base Damage:
88.42+41.71+68.4+41.71 = 240.24
Defender Base Damage:
76.63+36.15+59.28+36.15 = 208.21
Damage buff caps: Cor +400%; Def +300%
Cor chain at damage cap: 1201.2
Def chain at damage cap: 832.84
This doesn't even consider scourge. Defender damage output is not in the same ballpark. Even unslotted and ignoring scourge, which we shouldn't do, cor damage is 15% higher and it just goes up from there.
Be well, people of CoH.
Outside of melee alts I have at 50 several trollers, 2 Veats, a defender, a blaster.
I'd highly recommend a crab spider, a fortunata or an ill/rad troller
...what non melee toon would you make?
I've been playing since a few weeks after release, with the occasional break here or there to deploy, and all I've ever really been interested in is melee toons, specifically scrappers and brutes. Now I have the urge to play something else, to try out one of these "squishies" though I'm really not sure what to choose. That's why I come here, to the Hall of Scrappers. When you aren't stuck in scrapperlock or chasing fury, what do you play?
