Willpower or Invinc?
It's the to hit check that is part of fury generation. Not them hitting you. So the -to hit of Dark/Dark doesn't matter. Its the fear and stun that keeps them from increasing fury. However, you get fury for attacking and for having mobs around you. So its not a total wash.
Invuln is tougher and better in my opinion that WP. Might be easier to level with WP though. FM/Invuln or DM/Invuln would be a fun set for just about anyone imo. Stone/WP is a good combo, as well as DM/WP.
Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.
Hello all,
My first Brute was a Dark/Dark, which I only got to like 20ish. Fit my concept, but was worried I didn't capitalize on building up her fury if all her attacks reduced the acc/to hit of her enemies. |
Inv or WP. Flip a coin.
Is this something they added recently? I don't remember it and there's nothing on Paragon Wiki about it.

Also, with some (relatively recent, but not the kind in your question) changes, it's basically academic for just about any brute to maintain 50-70% fury without expending much effort.
WP vs Inv is like apples and oranges.
WP is a bit heavier on the typed defense, save when it comes to S/L, as well as decent Psi def. But it only has good S/L and Psi resists. It also comes packaged with great regen and recovery meaning it's easier to run additional toggles, but lacks a self heal and has a weaker taunt aura.
Inv has more S/L resists, and better all around Resists, except for the Psi hole. It also has good all around defense, not as high as WPs non-S/L defenses, but with the exception of (surprise) psi they are all level. Inv also has a heal, Dull Pain, that also boosts your maximum HP, but takes a while to recharge and it's a late blooming set.
In the right hands either can be great sets. Inv is the sturdier of the two, but WP is more flexible.

My vote is for Willpower. Invulnerability is mostly focused on S/L resistance and is basically a defense-based character when not facing S/L critters. Willpower's regeneration doesn't care what damage type you are taking. When considering end-game IO set builds, both have nearly equal potential for defense. Resistance, regeneration, and Invuln's psi hole should be the main considerations.
Willpower or Invulnerability?
Invulnerability. I think with the addition of so many great Incarnate powers boosting different stats, (like Regeneration and Endurance Reduction- problem areas for Invulnerability when it is stacked against Willpower) you can make Invulnerability more well rounded and livable than WP. Sure, there is a lot of /psi being tossed about in late game, but Invulnerability is tough and becomes even tougher after investing in a good build, IOs and incarnate boosts.
There are plenty of similarities, but I personally would just go for invulnerability as it just feels so much sturdier than willpower does to me.
Words to the wise aren't necessary- it's the stupid ones that need them.
"You're right...I forgot...being constantly at or the near the damage cap is a big turn off. Definitely not worth it."

A year ago I woulda said WP but now I recommend Invulnerability. It's just so damned tough.
WP will keep you attacking longer, Inv will keep you alive longer.

Auroxis - Emp/Rad/Power Defender Pylon Video Soloing an AV
Pelvic Thunder - SS/Elec/Mu Brute
Sorajin - Elec/Nin Stalker
Neuropain - Sonic/Mental/Elec Blaster
Before Incarnate I would have said WP, but the incarnate powers fill in the holes of Invuln in recovery and regen much better than they do for will power.
I don't know if I would ever recommend a build based solely on Incarnate powers. I think the sets are fairly even but on brutes the extra end recovery is pretty delicious while leveling. Auroxis is exactly correct.

I'm in the /WP camp also.
My /Inv Brute is coming into the mid 40's and finally has enough defenses
to thrive - I'm sure it'll get better from here on out with that toon.
By contrast, my /WP brute's resistances and more importantly +regen were
in place early, and that made it much more playable (and beastly) from the
20's on up, and Incarnate makes it even better now.
Reviewing their careers, I find there's no situation (so far) where
I'd take my /Inv over my /WP. Perhaps that will change when the /Inv
hits 50 and gets into the Incarnate content, but I haven't seen signs
of it yet.
That's not to say /Inv isn't an excellent secondary, but for me, I prefer
the /WP Brute. YMMV

Willpower. One of your big Energy Melee attacks hits your own health. With Willpower you can just ignore that part of the thing.
Also, having run both for a very long time Willpower has the edge. Crashless tier 9, etc. It does struggle a little more with survivability. There are things you can do, grab both fighting shields. Combat Jumping doesnt hurt either. Any defense bonuses from any I/O enhancers will be noticed, believe me. If you are budget minded, go just for smashing/lethal defenses bonuses. Even a few small ones will increase survivability somewhat.
Just for the record, I feel fire/willpower/soul is a superb combo on a brute, leveraging every strength of the AT to the maximum.
That said, and invuln brute, properly build, is ridiculously tough. FAR more durable than a willpower.
But if you want to be THAT tough, roll a tank.

I think the two are very evenly matched overall.
Here's my list of Pros for each as they compare to each other:
Invuln Pros:
- +To Hit buff in Invincibility
- Ease of softcapping to multiple types of damage through Invinc (except Psi)
- Better overall resistances to all but Psi
- High Heal on Long Recharge in DP which also allows for a higher possible HP total than WP can achieve.
- Due to numbers 2 & 4 handles spike damage a bit better
- Incredibly strong Taunt aura
- True "godmode" providing massive survivability with an equally massive crash that has the potential to get you killed.
- +Perception buff (occasionally useful)
- Massive regen balances the lower overall resistances
- Massive recovery boost makes for running a relentless offense, even with the heavier endurance using primaries like SS & SM. or alternatively running a variety of extra toggles.
- Precious PSI Defense & Psi Resistance
- High Pain Threshold provides less HP than DP but is always on, and is not subject to requiring Recharge to be permanent (and consequently cannot be affected by recharge debuffs)
- One of the best Mez toggles in the entire game (see #4)
- Has a frequent use "weaker" T9 that self-mitigates its own minor crash - having such a minor crash allows WP to spend 2 minutes out of every 5 with nearly the same resistance values to all damage types as Invuln with the added benefit of Psi resistance as well.
Edit: For levelling up experience, especially Redside, solo or in small groups - I favor Willpower.
However, Energy melee is a notoriously poor primary and I would highly recommend you look into some other options.
Kinetic Melee, in my opinion, is the modern version of what Energy Melee most likely should have been.
Also, EM+WP will mean very low AoE as well as an overall weak taunt aura - you will want Taunt if you except to ever hold some aggro.
This is an age old discussion. I have both a top end WP and Invul brute.
Basicly in the early game WP is much friendlier. Easier to level and more tools to keep you going. If you get thru the earlier levels with invul then you deserve the power that comes later. If you PL'ed well I cant blame ya but you really didnt get the full invul experience.
At the base 50 game they are about the same. Both are tough in their own right but as pointed out above both benefits but WP's con are less obvious. Invul is slight tougher in gagainst most mob but with psi weakness over all is about the same.
50 with a few billion infamy, Invul is unstoppable without unstoppable. Its like granite without the downside. Toss in Darkest night or incarnate powers for psi hole and your god mode.
If you love your brutes go with Invul. The taunt arua keeps your fury up and damage high.
If your not so experiened you should go with WP. Its such a positive set you cant go wrong with it.
Enjoy either way.
Hello all,
My first Brute was a Dark/Dark, which I only got to like 20ish. Fit my concept, but was worried I didn't capitalize on building up her fury if all her attacks reduced the acc/to hit of her enemies. So on my next attempt, I am wanting to make an Energy Melee primary and was thinking of going either Willpower (I like the idea of the set) or Invincibility (so I could just take a bigger beating and hopefully survive through it). Anyone try one of these combos or have any thoughts on how they would play? I plan on going primarily solo, or small groups, and strictly PvE.
