It's something of a byproduct of my military and MMA training. I have taken real punches from people roughly her size, and I know that no matter how hard she might wind up for it, it's not gonna hurt much because she simply doesn't have the physical mass behind it. I have a really hard time with suspension of disbelief when it comes to things like that. I have a feeling that with the growing popularity of televised MMA, a lot of shows like this will have to be more realistic in their depiction of fighting if they want to get viewers on board.
Amusingly the first thing I thought of when reading this was a scene from an episode of Buffy where she is complaining about the lack of realism in the fighting depicted in a kung fu movie...

I agree with him, in a way. I'm ok with comic book characters like the little girl from Runways who are super strong despite not looking the part, but Wonder Woman is an Amazon, and that actress does not look the part of an Amazon.

I can't think of a single actress who has ever had the look of a DCU Amazon.

Like this version much better, I still think its a little campy but at the same time really glad they toned it down a notch or too.

On a side note, can we all please get into an argument about what a fictional Amazon female is supposed to look like? Cause that would be awesome.

Let's face it, Buffy was a comic book, just in a different medium. Her strength had nothing to do with her physical mass any more than Supergirl's does.
Strictly speaking, no it doesn't bother me because of the source of her strength and the lore behind the character.

I think people are misunderstanding the reason for my disbelief. It has less to do with the source of WW or Buffy's strength as it does with the lore of the character. WW is a Amazon, born and raised in a warrior culture, trained extensively in all manner of martial combat. This has been true through all known continuities of the character. With any kind of training of that sort comes fat loss, muscle developement, and a corresponding weight gain. It takes a concerted effort to train in that manner and not gain weight. This girl they have playing the role doesn't have that look. She doesn't look like she has ever spent more than 5 minutes at a time in a gym. She is soft. She can be 90 lbs of lean muscle, much like Callisto from Xena was, and be able to portray the character convincingly. This girl cannot.

The same is true of Supergirl for that matter. She is written as young and inexperienced, with virtually no actually fight training. She should be small and non-muscular for that reason. She has been able to get by on her powers and smarts without having to actually exert herself in a way that would cause muscle developement. However, compare her to her closest counterpart, Powergirl. Powergirl is older and has had far more training not just in the use of her powers, but in the use of her body as well. She is stronger and, more importantly, looks like she has had training. She is the embodiment of female strength and physical ability, and what I know a fight capable woman actually looks like.

That costume just... sucks, lol. And the actress just doesn't pull off the amazon thing imo. It's like they couldnt decide if they wanted to go conservative or full on comic book, and ended up with this mess. Wonder woman is gonna be hard to pull off regardless, but I think they really missed the mark here.

She might be an Amazon by origin, but she's a magical creation. Magic beings can be super strong without being physically imposing, or even toned.

Yes, she trained to fight, but she's also got a few powers on her side as well.

Wonder Woman shouldn't look like she just stepped out of a Ms Fitness USA contest. She's never been depicted in a comic that way.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

My favorite depiction of Wonder Woman is Alex Ross's, in which he depicts her as what she actually is...a lifelike clay golem, like Pygmalion.

Remember that show in the 1980s about the little judo kid? We always thought that was hilarious, with this teeny tiny 8-year-old smacking around these big guys, as if martial arts were magic.

She was a magical creation....as a baby. She grew up and trained all her life as an Amazon. She would be buff and toned.

After seeing the new pictures, her top is too tight. It makes her boobs look deformed.

I remember the TV Movie “The Last Electric Knight” & its TV series spin-off “Sidekicks” starring the annoying kid from Red Sonja.

Since he glowed & had electricity crackling around him when he did his martial arts, I would say that it was magic.

No, it was a little Asian kid or maybe a little black kid. I mean, as in teeny-tiny.

Edit: Maybe it was a movie. I just recall it was a little kid and we mocked it relentlessly.

As much as I like Alex Ross, I always find his version of WW looks transgendered.

It wasn't so much the woman he drew that I liked. There were these panels he drew where Wonder Woman has trying to hold up something beyon her regular super strength, and he drew her legs cracking litteraly under the strain like a clay or stone column would crack under that pressure. That imagery was sooo powerful, and my mind went...oh crap...I totally forgot she isn't human! I was floored!

I don't care how strong they look, because no matter how big their muscles get, they're never big enough for the things they ultimately lift.

Sooner or later, you have to use your imagination, anyway. If Christopher Reeve can act the part(s), I didn't care how scrawny he looked. Likewise, if Wonder Woman can convey the emotional strength needed to portray the part, I don't care how physically strong she looks.

Think Palicki can pull this off physically, but far more worried about what they're going to do to the character.

Frankly, not liking either of the costume incarnations seen so far. I'd prefer the Joan Jett WW to the plastic jeans one...

Is it time for the dance of joy yet?
