Mac users and the New launcher

I see that the new launcher is out, and the pc users get extra goodies for downloading and using the new launcher. Are we mac users going to be able to use the new wisp aura, or are the mac users gonna get shafted again.

several threads already exist.

First, the new Windows launcher isn't all that great. It's built with Microsoft .NET, and as evidenced by the numerous users poking into the Technical Issues, buggy as a Georgia Swamp during Mosquito mating season.

Also, as you probably already guessed given whose behind it, .NET is not a native-multiplatform API / Framework.

There is a multi-platform implementation of .NET to be found in Attachmate Mono, but as mentioned in previous threads, running Mono as a solution for .NET is just begging for a lawsuit from software patents.

Efforts are underway to try and get NCSoft to just scrap the existing launcher and build a new launcher leveraging Native Multiplatform frameworks / API's such as QT.

I play Mac-side on my machine, and I was able to get the Wisp Aura.

Of course, I've got Boot Camp to Windows XP on my Mac, and I just patched up my windows side installs of CoH and CoH Test to run from the <snark> "New" </snark> Launcher and logged in to the live server I play on (Virtue). That then flagged my account, and every character I have got the Wisp Aura.

I then promptly dual booted back to OS:X and (continued) to ignore the Windows side "Launcher" for CoH as heavily as it deserves to be.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

Just start the game with the -launcher switch and you'll get the goodies anyway.

Thanks for the ideas all. I have to computers loaded with COH. I have a desktop pc and my macbook pro. I take my pro with me when I travel for work. But I also use it as an alternate at home when I have coh friends come over and want to play.

I'll see if I can use you ideas to get the wisps aura.

thanks again.

Ala setting -test or -beta? (CiderGameOptions?) I'm hesitant to alter my Info.plist without knowing exactly what I'm doing.

I have this strong gut feeling that we'll be left out of the new shiny crap...

The Mac Launcher should be available soon and Mac users will be able to unlock the wisp aura with the Mac Launcher.

I like to dual box on occasion with my 2 accounts. This was easy before as I just installed 2 instances of COH. How can I dual box with the new launcher?

From my soon-to-be-posted new Mac Guide:

You can run multiple instances of City of Heroes by Duplicating the application (File > Duplicate) and calling the alternate one something like "City of Heroes (2)". You can then launch both applications at once. If you use this method, the second copy will not be usable with the NCSoft Launcher. The Launcher is not capable of launching multiple instances of City of Heroes on its own.

That's the part that actually worried me. If one has to use the launcher to run COH, then dual-boxing does not seem to be an option.

Like the other part of your description, I was hoping one could make a "2nd" copy of the luancher and tether it to the "2nd" copy of COH. As such, I do not see any advantage to using the launcher if I have to give up being able to launch a 2nd instance.

Actually that might work. I copied an entire folder with the Launcher, and both the Test Server and Live versions of CoH to another Mac, and it worked as it did on the first one, implying all the application's preferences are stored within the application.

But, because I haven't tested dual-launch specifically yet, I left that suggestion out of the Guide. I may add it on after I have time to test it and carefully analyze the results (i.e. no preference corruption, etc). You're welcome to try in the mean time, but be aware it's not tested.

Although lacking in Mac-fu, I got it to work (thanks to your suggestions) by creating a folder in my Apps folder and creating duplicate copies of COH and the Launcher. You can rename the launcher and place a shortcut in your dock. One can change the path in the 2nd launcher to point to the COH app buried in the folder via the Properties button. The launcher requires that the copy must still be named City Of Heroes so do not rename that app.

The one remaining test I wanted to do is to make sure changes/server patches to one client set or another doesn't affect the other one. So if you make sure Properties changes in the Launcher doesn't affect the 2nd copy, and the upcoming patch on Tuesday doesn't corrupt one set or the other, I'll add it to the guide permanently.

I can confirm that the above technique works fine... even with updates. When I launched my duplicate instance of the launcher (located within a subfolder in my Apps folder) it succesfully updated the 2nd instance of COH to which I had tethered (via modifying the location in Properties). Both COH instances went throught their own patching/updating sequence and I was able to run both side by side on my dual accounts. Now, when I want to run a second instance of COH, I just activate the 2nd launcher.

I'm having trouble finding the Properties menu to change the path for the second launcher and game client. A little help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Click the triangle next to the game's name (City of Heroes) and there's a Properties item at the end. Double-click that.

Hi there and thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing the triangle you're talking about. When I open the folder I created in the App folder, I see the Get Info option by right clicking the game or launcher but I don't see a Properties item there. Sorry to be difficult, but am I missing something?

It's in the launcher itself. Start the launcher, then look at the list of games. Whether they are installed or uninstalled, there is a triangle next to each name. Click the triangle and more options open up. Double-click "Properties" there. It's not the usual place you'd put something called "Properties". I think I'd call it "Settings", but that's just me.

And don't forget the "no spaces in folder names" issue! That'll mess you up real good. ("City of Heroes.app" is OK, but every enclosing folder can't have spaces in the names, ugh.)
