When to delete an alt?
I don't think I have ever deleted a character. I have rerolled quite a few characters (particularly my werewolf, Loopy Loup Garou) but in most cases I actually kept the original and just created the new version on another server. With Loopy I ended up recreating him twice, though, so the original build that was replace was deleted when I created the third build back over on that original server.
There is just very little reason to delete alts any more, now that we have server transfers. If I need room, I can just move some characters I don't use any more off of the servers where I have the majority of my characters. My mains, Jade Dragon, Blue Diamond, and Genie Gold are like that, their "home" is on Freedom, but I actually don't PLAY them there. I move them to Pinnacle or Virtue to play them, then six months or so later move them back to Freedom and transfer another of my mains to take their place.
I'm actually trying to remember the last character I deleted, he was on Pinnacle, and below level 10. I was trying to free up space to move some of my SoAs over to my main account when the level requirement was lowered to 20. I'm actually not sure I ever did delete a character, though, I may have just shuffled characters between my main and secondary accounts. (Below level 10, it's no issue to just delete from one account and recreate on the other. And I don't count that as a "delete")

I'd love to know I missed this somehow and that I can change servers anytime for free.

No you are correct shaggy , they do cost monies to do server transfers unless of course they have a free-transfer period.
I am thinking when they do server-merging they will have transfers because well, you're adding 11 servers to people who only used to have 4. They may want to free up room on their 'home' server, and just don't want to delete a character.
I delete characters all the time if I don't find them fun any longer, or if I just get sick of how dull they seem. Lately it has just been recoloring their powers or changing up the costume every so often, but I still end up deleting the character if I don't find it fun.
I have a couple characters at 50 that I wouldn't delete ever, one being my 'first toon' and the other of course being my name-sake toon. My main focus is towards the toon which I have always liked, and have spent the most in-game monies on (:
I only delete characters when I need the slot and don't want to buy more slots. So there have only been a handfull of deleted characters and most of them were because I rerolled them as something better. Like my EM/WP brute to SS/WP or a Fire tank into a brute. Also PB's, I can't seem to get a PB to make it past 30ish. He's been deleted 3 times now to make room.

This. I find it very hard to delete a toon, its like having no respec for all the work I put in it... and that toon can always sit around in WW and do some trading
I think it depends on the player's personality. I, personally, don't like leaving things unfinished, so I've deleted many alts. (Though I refuse to do this after level 44; If I played it for that long, it had to be fun, so it's definitely a keeper.)
The progress of characters in-game now isn't what it used to be. 1-50 is a much smoother road, which makes it much easier to delete a toon that couldn't cut it. Also, as someone mentioned before, the Incarnate system has changed things. If I'm not excited about the rigorous journey for the character to finally unlock that Omega slot, it's gone! For me, playing the lowbie alts only takes away from the progress I could be making on my handful of 50's that make me smile each time I see them staring back at me from the select screen.

I have deleted several chars. Level 1-10 or not. I have deleted 4 chars in the 30s. and 2 at lvl 41. And iv had thoughts of deleteing 1-2 my 50s cuz i never play them. I play enough where i can get a 50 in no time, even without farming, i can get to 50 pretty quick these days. I have no limit on delelting. Heck, ill delete a 50 just to use its name if i think it would fit better with my new char.

How long does it take for you to get a to 50. I'd love to hear about natural secrets. I'm in my 30s now and my progress has slowed significantly.
There are plenty of reasons to delete an alt. If they get nerfed into a oblivion and no amount of respecing will ever fix them then its ok to delete them. I had several like that in the past. But I got a few that I cant delete simply due to them getting hard to get badges but if they didnt have them they would be deleted.

Ive deleted at least one level 50 (and looking at another right now) quite a few 35-40 toons as well. If i find I dont enjoy the toon, stop playing it, or enjoy another concept better I will delete it.
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
I... I have a really hard time deleting alts. It's for silly things too. For instance, my dark/dark scrapper is the only one in her SG with the rank of "Pet-shark<^=>". I'll never play her again because I don't like the concept, but why would I want to lose that? D:
It's like deleting children. Would you delete your children? *puppy eyes*
Server: Virtue
Felis Noctu (50MM Necro/Miasma)
Night Widow Noctu (23SoA)
Toxica Mentis (50Troller Ill/Kin)
Thunder Kiandra (2*Tank WP/SS)
During my trial run, I created all sorts of MMs and doms and played them to 14. What I found was that I tend to like certain powersets better, so I pulled off all the loot on the 'doomed' toons and never looked back.
I leveled a stone/stone brute to 50 that didn't pass my longbow test. Instead of deleting, I shipped it off to Triumph during free transfer week to serve as a market mule. It is used to bid for recipes that I'll need for the active toons.
For me, it's more of an issue whether the toon's powerset meshes well with my playstyle and whether it meets my expectations for lvl 50 content.
I've deleted a few low level characters that I decided I didn't really want to play after all. I've also deleted something like 5 BS/* scrappers, all under level 20. The highest one I've ever deleted was a level 47 WP/EM tanker, because I realized I just didn't like the powerset anymore and wanted to use the same character, but with different powers.
Shortspark: 50 Fire/Fire tanker
Jessie Inferno: 50 Fire/SD scrapper
a wizard: 50 Rad/Sonic defender
The Nemesis Plothole: 50 StJ/Reg scrapper
LOL
It seems i am the polar opposite to the majority of players to comment so far then.
Im always deleting toons , ive even deleted a 50 ...
I have a loyalty obsession to be faithful to my main 3 toons (Dr. Daydream ill/rad/cold controller , Sam Swift Ma/Sr/Body Scrapper , Shady Sam (Human WS) ... i often role new toons with the hope that they will 'cut the mustard' and be worthy to become the 4th main but so far none have passed the test
Ive deleted alot of toons ... wouldnt even like to guess the figure but hey thats just me.
