How long does a thread have to be dead before it's Necromancy?

Thread necromancy - Necro-posting is responding to an old discussion thread and is a form of thread ‘bumping’. If you wish to discuss a considerably older topic, create a new post and link to the older discussion.
But what is considered "considerably older"? I've seen two threads bumped today - one was about two months old and it got locked. The other one was five months old and is still open at the time of this writing.

The first thread had veered off-topic and it made sense for it to be closed, but the 5-month-old thread was still on topic. I considered posting in the 5-month old thread because it's an interesting topic, but I don't want to break any forum rules by doing so.

It's going to depend on the Mod, most likely, as well as the subject matter. Common subjects are likely to get Modded faster than subjects that rarely, if ever, come up. Also, if you're keeping it on topic, it might still be useful to people to ask clarifications on.

On top of that, it depends on if anyone actually reports the thread for notice. If the Mods don't know about something, they can't exactly read every thread on the boards just looking for stuff.

Thirdly, it also depends on the manner in which is was brought back up. If it's just done randomly, for no apparent purpose, it's likely to get locked. If, however, someone brings back a thread saying something like, "Sorry to bring this up, but this is the first thread that came up in my search on subject X," I bet the Mods will be a little more lenient.

If the topic is relevant and the entire discussion is not out of date, I would say its probably okay to resurrect an old thread. However, if it is several issues old and the information is no longer accurate due to game changes it may be best to make a new thread and possibly provide a link to the old one.

I think it was The Ocho that once said a good rule of thumb was anything over 3 months start a new thread.

If it's been 'dead' so long it fools people into thinking it's a new thread, it's necromancy.

You can always start a new thread and link back to the old. One trick is to hit 'quote' for the post you want to reply to, copy that data block, and then paste it into the first post of a new thread.

You can hit "Multi-Quite", start a new thread, and then there'll be a link at the bottom of the text window to paste the post in for you.

You know, I just noticed that feature for the first time last week. (Not the multi-quote functionality, but the link at the bottom of a new reply where you have 'outstanding' flagged multi-quotes.)

My personal rule of thumb would probably be about two weeks. Older than that it's unlikely anyone but you wants to continue the discussion.

Certain exceptions exist, where the whole point is to have a fun or joke or re-occuring thread. "Mace/Energy Aura So Strong and Pretty" in the brute forum for example.

I think the most appropriate answer is, "It depends."

I agree.

A lot of people have the opinion that if it's off the first page, it's not worth reading, while others look back over everything they missed when they were offline.

I've always felt the "front page only" people were silly. That would be like not reading anything past A1 in a newspaper.

2 to three weeks with no posts = deadthread.

Not my definition.
