How long's Black Manta been around? I'm assuming he's black (never seen him w/o the suit) because his son, the new Aqualad, is.

Issues of Brightest Day have shown him without the suit, he's black.

Moses Magnum was in a couple of Classic X Men comics. Classic X Men meaning Marvel reprinted comics from the 70s in the 90s.

Moses is from 1975, there must be someone from before that. I'm not sure Black Manta counts if he went decades without anyone seeing his skin color.

I would suggest you browse the exhibits at Blacksuperhero.com. It covers not just heroes but villains as well.

Man Ape is the next oldest I can find at '69. Wiki doesn't say when it was revealed that Black Manta was black.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

good luck D.B.B.

Black Manta was revealed as African-American in the same story where he killed Aquaman and Mera's son, in 1977.

Is that as horrifically racist as it sounds?

Military guy finds magic white gorilla. (/Hermes) Eats said gorilla to gain its power. Starts wearing ridiculous gorilla costume, and adopts one of the worst supervillain names ever.

The basic idea's not so bad, but the execution is downright silly.

I remember Black Lightning being one of the first.

I chalk up Man Ape as being a product of the times. Last time I saw him was when the regular West Coast Avengers series started all those years ago.

Originally Black Adam was Egyptian. Now he's basically Arabic, coming from DC's fictional Middle Eastern country Kahndaq.

Entirely possible, or that there are other, more obscure characters we're missing. Either way, beyond the superheroey material I'm the most familiar with.

Thunderball, a member of the Wrecking Crew, has been around for a while. According to Wikipedia, he first appeared in 1974. Fought various members of Marvel's hero community.

Well if you don't just limit it to comic books Eartha Kitt was playing Catwoman in the 60s.

Eartha Kitt as Catwoman

That's a good point about Eartha Kitt although they retconned catwoman for the movie and made her white.

I know we've found a few that show up before Black Manta, but if he actually has the blood on his hands, from the offspring of the star of the comic no less, he should get the label of first black super villain. Moses Magnum never did anything the villainous, he may have tried, buy Black Manta did the most Villainous thing sooner then any other black villain.

Maybe we need to split this into two categories. First Black Villain and First Black Super Villain.

Umm...no real retconning involved and you've got the order wrong. On the television show she was originally played by Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in 13 episodes. Then when they made the movie after the end of the first season she was played by Lee Meriwether. Then when Julie Newmar was unavailable for more episodes because she was contracted to be in a movie they got Eartha Kitt who played Catwoman in 5 episodes. But Kitt's turn as Catwoman may still make her the first black supervillain.

I goto a weekly comic trivia at a local bar every week and we have had this question before.

The first black superhero is Black panther

the first African American superhero was Falcon

I looked it up online and that is what I found.

Now there is probably a chance that there where some before them two but they may not take into account some of the smaller companies.

Question was, however, who was the first black super *villian*

I'm gonna call her the first black costumed villain. Granted, she did *look* super in that outfit, but it's hard to argue that there was anything else super about her or really any of the villains the Dynamic Duo faced in that show
