The Guide to BURN
Reminder, only 25 hours left before this month's deadline. This means you - Lousy Day, Tartyrsause, Defiance Jones (would love to see a finished piece in time), and Christopher Robin (mentioning you just because, you've often been a wait-till-the-last-minute-literally-before-submitting)
Yeah nothings working out, I ain't got ****.
Read my in-game stories and check out my DeviantART page.
- coXso - It was a memorable time filled with art!
I have had an idea for weeks, but never got started. I can't seem to get interested. Maybe I will do something tomorrow...if you are eliminated, are you out for the year or can you come back in April?

my little thought on scoring has really caused some trouble. Perhaps we need a game theorist to help us out with these things. You know one of those people that design lotto tickets.
Roxy On DA...Finally!
The only really tangible result that comes from this contest is that people produce art and maybe develop as artists or do things they don't normally do. Participation is more important than haggling over the rules. Bubba if you drop out I beat you!

wasn't with Bubba's participation. He failed to put up a qualifying piece, simple as that.
This is a contest and (like it or not) there are rules if you want to participate.
Jan's theme was Fire and this was Bubba's entry
<---Click
Do you see anything remotely resembling fire?
Some squiggly lines indicating where there will be fire at some point perhaps?
He can't (nor is he trying to) say he didn't understand what the theme was
or when the deadline was since he's the one that set both of them. In the past if anyone else had
failed to submit they would be out therefore so should Bubba but instead he made an exception allowing himself to continue
and as the host awarded himself 11 points. This is what I had a problem with because if we are going to have rules they need to apply to everyone equally.
Of course now with the rules changed to allow open participation through March he could probably
jump right back in if he wanted (that's not for me to decide) but in my opinion he shouldn't get any points for his Jan entry.
P.S. As for participation there's no reason anyone outside the contest couldn't post their interpretation of the theme right alongside those in the contest and play along without rules or votes.
Nooo! Hang on! Simplicity is the key here! Don't be to harsh on yourself. You can do it.

a long time ago and if the goal was just to create it in pencils it would be. I've got a pretty decent ice effect...
...I just cannot get Photoshop to do what I want for the rest and I'm tired of fighting with it.
I'll probably just make up something later, for now I need a break.
Lol if you stare at it for a few seconds you'll realize the shark flying up out of the water is an order of magnitude smaller
(it doesn't even fill the view out the tiny airplane window) than the one that bites the plane a second later.
I'm paying next to no attention to the contest this year, not even really paying attention to the rules debate or anything, but this caught my eye...
Regardless of how I feel about the person running the contest being in the contest, I have to say I think that pic qualifies for the fire theme. That looks to me like one of Bubba's Matchstick characters. They are all fire based toons, I believe... So that right there is a valid connection to me.
Maybe it's not the most all encompassing expression of the theme but I definitely think it's enough to qualify as an entry.
Unless the art reads to it's subject as fire themed, it's not fire themed. If you need pre-existing knowledge to understand the connection and your subject does not have that knowledge, then your piece fails to express itself.
If I drew Mel and had no fire anywhere at all, it would not read as fire-themed to anyone who didn't know the character. That's a failure to express the theme for that month.
This goes for everyone, not just Bubba.

Well that seems a much different opinion than what you've held in the past but no matter my initial objection wasn't with Bubba's participation. He failed to put up a qualifying piece, simple as that. |
As for Bubba's piece--no, I don't believe it's as simple as you're stating. The theme of the contest was fire. The issue is then "what constitutes a work that is playing on this theme?" If I drew a devil with a pitchfork, would the connotations of hellfire be enough to qualify? What about a gun firing? Or a depiction of someone suffering from acid indigestion?
How about ice? Someone here suggested a picture with diamonds. IMO an art contest should be fostering creativity. Unfortunately they sometimes suffer from overly literal understanding of how the theme should serve as a basis for the work.
I believe he made a good faith effort to qualify. I'm taking into account his current level of ability and difference in style. Also, while I agree with Suichi's philosophy that the work should speak for itself it's not uncommon for judges to question an artist in order to clarify some aspect of the work. And we're not talking about winning here, just qualifying for the competition.

There is no separating previous knowledge from judging art. As such I think it makes sense that Bubs can justly expect the vast majority here to know his Matchsticks, just as any artist here could justly expect the audience here to know Positron... Ok, maybe not equal expectation if knowledge, but close enough...
If this judging was open to the whole webverse then sure, I could see an argument that Bubba's character is not familiar enough to meet the theme. In our little corner of the web though, I personally find it totally sufficient.
Of course art speaks to people in different ways, and different people read different interpretations into art. That being the case if push came to shove regarding meeting the theme then I believe we should base it on what we believe the artists intentions were... And I believe Bubba intended people to know it was a fire character.
I tried to imagine winter in Croatoa. I thought the giant in diapers would freeze to death.
This composition is really boring but I didn't have the time to start over.
I painted it with a free program called MyPaint except for level adjustments with Photoshop at the end.

Here's my entry.
That one is beautiful, ChristopherRobin!
unfortunately, real life intruded (I'll spare you the sob story) and my unfinished WIP will have to serve as my entry.
(I would ask that my piece be excluded from any bonus "early bird" points as I don't think it warrants it, but I'm afraid that would spark a big debate )
sides, I'm not really worried about winning. I'm just in it to try and do some art.
And entries for this month are closed. I should be able to get the voting thread up by early tomorrow afternoon. Some nice last minute entries, and great art all around. Thanks to everyone whose sticking with me.
And voting thread is now up here.
NOOOO!!! *jumps on thread* ... pant.. ..pant.. OK OK.. im late.. but I did manage to get it in by the end of the month with 5 days to spare...*pout*..
hmm.. winter ladys still isnt as nude as "bubbly bath tub Sister Psi" is in the official COH comic book.. errr.. anyway, I hated her belt and didnt want to draw it..
....theres NO real reason why Tartrys standing on a pile of snowmen, anymore then theres a reason why Winter Queen desided to try to climb on his shoulders for a cheerleader type pyramid..
..sigh.. I made some MAJOR coloring mistakes on this one.. ahh well...
