Why the CoX community is the best...
It's kind of like someone posting on the Defender forums and complaining that all the existing Defender players are forming a cartel that excludes all new players from teaming, citing as proof the fact their "pure healer" got kicked out of several PuGs.

Due to a string of bad luck, I've had to drop the game for a few months at a time, and came back as soon as I could.
I always miss the community most of all when I'm gone. It's one of the few places where we can have a civil discussion on most topics and it not turn into a volatile flame pit.
Like was previously said, I think it's because we're an older, more mature group of people, and we're a lot more tolerant of others people's opinions.
In other games, if you were to post a build that was different than the standard cookie-cutter builds everyone else had, you'd get the trolling remarks and snarky comments.
Over here? It's "That's interesting. I'd do it a little different, but that looks like a fun build."
Great players. Great game. Great people. That's why this community is the best.
And the first time you try to enter a tram from the exit door and wonder why the train isn't responding? You're no longer a new player. But I've never done that... twice in a row.
The fun, amazing gameplay AND the wonderful people have kept me here for six years. It is very much like a sort of 'family.' I really enjoy helping others if I can so they can have more fun...as long as this game exisits, I will probably be playing it. Welcome!

With the exception of running the Alpha Slot arc on my 20+ 50s two weeks ago, I haven't really played or logged in for more than checking friends list and channels since early November. Vacations, Holidays and Birthday are now done and my semester is in full swing. I'm quite busy in real life.
However, I don't go more than a day without checking in on my friends here at the forums and never let my sub lapse. If I had to spend eternity playing a game, I would choose CoH and all of the awesome people here without hesitation.
I'd like to say thank you to the community as well for continuing to be the supportive and fun group we've all come to love and cherish.
Now, I've seen the community's ugly side, as well, especially when an issue comes up that concerns many people, which leads me to believe that a lot of the community's niceness stems from the fact that we rarely let the game get to us. We have relatively little conditioned competition among players, and there are very few "elitist" achievements on top of that, so most people are just as likely to want to help you out of the goodness of their heart as they are to snicker in your general direction while thinking how much better they are. And it's a good thing, I'd say.

There's no community where there won't be occasional conflict. Or, if there is, that kind of community would rapidly turn into a bizarre groupthink-y cult. The community here shows that it can have its differences, and in the end still all log in and do their best to save the world.
And it helps that we have devs who generally listen to and try to act on what the players say, standard pvp rants aside.

My postings to this forum are not to be used as data in any research study without my express written consent.
This game unquestionably has the best community of any onliner, and more specifically it isn't even fair to it's two closest mmo competitors to bring up a comparison.

Heh... I was just telling a friend of mine that I must be spoiled... by my game forums.
I'm kinda the oddball amongst my friends. Though many of us work in the theatrical/entertainment industry in one capacity or another, none of them are what I'd call "gamers". So, I got a laugh and a funny look (gamers, really? lol) when I said that.
But truly, when I go to other sites, whether it be other game forums, pet forums, news sites or whatever... I am always taken by surprise by the amount of vitriol that gets spewed "out there". I know I shouldn't be, the anonymity effect of the interwebs and all, but I am.... because the CoH/V forums have spoiled me.

Yeah, I've learned this community is definitely the place to be.
Other game...
"Hey, guys, I'd like to film something here for a video" = "OH LOOK, TARGET!" *harass harass harass get in shot PvP bother bother harass"
Here...
"Hey guys, I'd like to film something here for a video" = "need help?" "whatcha need?" "get my good side!"
Night and day difference... I gave up trying to make vids on another game I play on coz the support I've so gotten used to here is completely lacking any place else.

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
CoH players enjoy messing up cutscenes with clever remarks, but that is about it.

I've been on this game for about 18 months now (I'll get my 18 month badge on Feb. 2). As my first MMO, I really had no idea what to expect concerning the game community. But, in this time, I have realized that the City of Heroes community is, by and large, a friendly, fun, helpful group. We share tips and tricks with one another, help each other out, congratulate one another on our accomplishments, and commiserate with one another over bad PUG stories. In short, the CoX community actually feels like a community.
So, in my naivete, I mistakenly thought that other MMOs would share the same community feel that I've come to expect and love here. (Hey, CoX was my first MMO, I can be excused for being naive, can't I?).
Well, last week my partner and I decided to try out the other new superhero MMO that just launched. We got in to playing the game, enjoyed it, and were looking forward to finding out from others some tips, tricks, and things we had missed.
Imagine my dismay when I logged in to that community's forums, and realized that 75% of the posts were insults toward other players. Even questions such as "I am new to this brand-new MMO that has been out only a week, how do I find (Major NPC)?" are greeted with "Learn to play Noob!" and "Use the F***ING SEARCH FUNCTION!!!11!!" In fact, when I posted my response to a question concerning an in-game issue, I was insulted because I didn't share the opinions of the beta testers.
This complete disregard for any sense of community, and the sheer masochistic joy many players seemed to get in insulting "teh n00bs" made me realize that I will never feel any sense of commitment to that game. It is a fun game, sure. But, when people in a game's "community" go out of their way to one-up each other, insult one another, and feed their own egos, I have little incentive to see the game succeed in the long-term.
Now, that leads me back to the purpose behind my post. I wanted to thank the CoX community for being the positive place it is, and making my entrance in to MMOs a memorable one. Even though I take hiatuses from the game now and then, I want to see this game, this community, succeed. It is an amazing game, with an equally amazing group of players. So, to all of you, I say thank you!
No seriously, this community is the bomb. From the forums, to in game to the meet n greets, I've never had this much fun with a bunch of dorks I barely know. It's finally nice to be in a place where I can be a dork and feel right at home as well.
