Why the CoX community is the best...

I've been on this game for about 18 months now (I'll get my 18 month badge on Feb. 2). As my first MMO, I really had no idea what to expect concerning the game community. But, in this time, I have realized that the City of Heroes community is, by and large, a friendly, fun, helpful group. We share tips and tricks with one another, help each other out, congratulate one another on our accomplishments, and commiserate with one another over bad PUG stories. In short, the CoX community actually feels like a community.

So, in my naivete, I mistakenly thought that other MMOs would share the same community feel that I've come to expect and love here. (Hey, CoX was my first MMO, I can be excused for being naive, can't I?).

Well, last week my partner and I decided to try out the other new superhero MMO that just launched. We got in to playing the game, enjoyed it, and were looking forward to finding out from others some tips, tricks, and things we had missed.

Imagine my dismay when I logged in to that community's forums, and realized that 75% of the posts were insults toward other players. Even questions such as "I am new to this brand-new MMO that has been out only a week, how do I find (Major NPC)?" are greeted with "Learn to play Noob!" and "Use the F***ING SEARCH FUNCTION!!!11!!" In fact, when I posted my response to a question concerning an in-game issue, I was insulted because I didn't share the opinions of the beta testers.

This complete disregard for any sense of community, and the sheer masochistic joy many players seemed to get in insulting "teh n00bs" made me realize that I will never feel any sense of commitment to that game. It is a fun game, sure. But, when people in a game's "community" go out of their way to one-up each other, insult one another, and feed their own egos, I have little incentive to see the game succeed in the long-term.

Now, that leads me back to the purpose behind my post. I wanted to thank the CoX community for being the positive place it is, and making my entrance in to MMOs a memorable one. Even though I take hiatuses from the game now and then, I want to see this game, this community, succeed. It is an amazing game, with an equally amazing group of players. So, to all of you, I say thank you!
L33rn to H8, N00b!

No seriously, this community is the bomb. From the forums, to in game to the meet n greets, I've never had this much fun with a bunch of dorks I barely know. It's finally nice to be in a place where I can be a dork and feel right at home as well.

It's kind of like someone posting on the Defender forums and complaining that all the existing Defender players are forming a cartel that excludes all new players from teaming, citing as proof the fact their "pure healer" got kicked out of several PuGs.

Due to a string of bad luck, I've had to drop the game for a few months at a time, and came back as soon as I could.

I always miss the community most of all when I'm gone. It's one of the few places where we can have a civil discussion on most topics and it not turn into a volatile flame pit.

Like was previously said, I think it's because we're an older, more mature group of people, and we're a lot more tolerant of others people's opinions.

In other games, if you were to post a build that was different than the standard cookie-cutter builds everyone else had, you'd get the trolling remarks and snarky comments.

Over here? It's "That's interesting. I'd do it a little different, but that looks like a fun build."

Great players. Great game. Great people. That's why this community is the best.

And the first time you try to enter a tram from the exit door and wonder why the train isn't responding? You're no longer a new player. But I've never done that... twice in a row.

The fun, amazing gameplay AND the wonderful people have kept me here for six years. It is very much like a sort of 'family.' I really enjoy helping others if I can so they can have more fun...as long as this game exisits, I will probably be playing it. Welcome!

With the exception of running the Alpha Slot arc on my 20+ 50s two weeks ago, I haven't really played or logged in for more than checking friends list and channels since early November. Vacations, Holidays and Birthday are now done and my semester is in full swing. I'm quite busy in real life.

However, I don't go more than a day without checking in on my friends here at the forums and never let my sub lapse. If I had to spend eternity playing a game, I would choose CoH and all of the awesome people here without hesitation.

I'd like to say thank you to the community as well for continuing to be the supportive and fun group we've all come to love and cherish.

And it's a good thing, I'd say.
I know whereof you speak, and agree with you, for the most part.

There's no community where there won't be occasional conflict. Or, if there is, that kind of community would rapidly turn into a bizarre groupthink-y cult. The community here shows that it can have its differences, and in the end still all log in and do their best to save the world.

And it helps that we have devs who generally listen to and try to act on what the players say, standard pvp rants aside.

This game unquestionably has the best community of any onliner, and more specifically it isn't even fair to it's two closest mmo competitors to bring up a comparison.

Heh... I was just telling a friend of mine that I must be spoiled... by my game forums.

I'm kinda the oddball amongst my friends. Though many of us work in the theatrical/entertainment industry in one capacity or another, none of them are what I'd call "gamers". So, I got a laugh and a funny look (gamers, really? lol) when I said that.

But truly, when I go to other sites, whether it be other game forums, pet forums, news sites or whatever... I am always taken by surprise by the amount of vitriol that gets spewed "out there". I know I shouldn't be, the anonymity effect of the interwebs and all, but I am.... because the CoH/V forums have spoiled me.

CoH players enjoy messing up cutscenes with clever remarks, but that is about it.

"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"

"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."

Thank you everyone for all the responses!

It's great to see other people having the same positive view of the CoX community. It really is a wonderful community, and people like you all are the reason for it.

Guilty as charged. i have one alt who has "say Cutscenes are nature's way of telling you that you're about to get your *** kicked." bound to the 'K' key. (i'm not sure that counts as well done, but it's amused me.)

The official forums here are the best of any MMO i've been to. While i've never subscribed to any other MMOs i've been in the betas of a few and followed their forums for a bit afterwards, as well as reading a bit on other game forums that friends play. CoH has hands down the friendliest and most helpful forum community i've ever seen. That's not to say that some of us (like me) aren't rude and snarky on occasion, but it's a rarity and generally requires the other party initiate any hostilities.

Actually, the forum this reminds me of most is when i used to frequent the Hero Games (pen and paper RPGs) forums a bit over a decade ago. The game developers and players were friendly and communicative with both parties having polite discussions about game mechanics and balance.

However, the forums censorware was amusing in that we couldn't discuss Batman's first sidekick by name despite the company's flagship RPG being superhero themed. (In addition to several other words that are generally considered innocuous in standard English. ) That did eventually get corrected.

So, yeah, CoX forums community... still one of the best (if not THE best) in the industry. Admittedly this is on the internet, so it's not like the bar is set all that high.

I wonder if there'll be any cutscenes in the I20 Trials, or could that be too disruptive? The BAF raid is a 5 stage raid, so there could be a cutscene during a break between the stages, depending on how fluid the transition between stages is.

I'm not a regular reader of the Market forum but from my experience it's full of people who really, truly want to help new players. If you ask how to turn your millions to billions there, people will gladly share the info. It'd be easy for them to hoard information and shun new competition but they're just as open, welcoming, and helpful there as the rest of the forums are.

The problem is when the occasional player visits and vents about how evil market manipulators are the cause of his woes. The replies for the most part early on try to educate the angry visitor, but the typical pattern is that someone who's seeing red already has their mind made up. They're impervious to reason. They lash out. Then the Market forum unleashes Nethergoat in full snark mode.

But seriously, I've been amazed at the efforts Fulmens and the others put in. They'll patiently write long essays trying to help angry, ignorant folks to see how the market really works.

Anyway, overall I have to agree with the many others in this thread who have said that one of the best things about this game is its community.

Exactly. And if the Distinguished Competition encourages our Devs to make improvements to this game to maintain their market share, even better!

And speaking of markets - my problem with the Market (forum and in-game) has more to do with runaway inflation and the numbers getting absurdly, stupidly big. (I'm opposed to meaningless zeroes in principle; IMO, when it takes thousands of any currency to buy something useful, the currency should be revalued to shrink the denominations.) But the blame for that falls at least as much on the Devs, for making the earning power of all 50s, not just those who play the market, so disproportionate to the rest of the game. My solution, in any case, is simple - I just don't go to that part of the forums. Ditto the PvP zones and board.

I have been playing WOW for years, and even stopped playing CoX for a while to focus on WOW. Now I am back, and it is largely because the in-game community in CoX is nothing like the one in WOW.

Heroes players are generally much nicer people.

The ugly attitudes and misbehavior that soured me on WOW are simply rarely seen in City of Heroes... in-game, or in the forum. To the contrary, people are either extremely pleasant and generous, or at least they stay out of your way.

There is not much point to playing a MMO if you hate the other people there.

My twin boys are very young (6 months), but it's my fond hope that CoH is still going strong in a few years, when they can sit beside me and begin to learn to play the game. Someone in the community recently posted to say that his 6-yr old daughter learned to read at an early age due to his involving her in CoH--"That says 'Steel Canyon', right, Daddy?' I can see myself doing the same, and also using age-appropriate graphic lit. Words with pictures (or toons) make it easier for a new brain to make synaptic connections.

The game itself is also very intuitive, and easy to learn to play. Like the rest of you, I've found the Commnunity to be vastly helpful, with very few snarky-folk. Why learn if you can't teach? I will always help anyone with a question if I know the answer, because in my opinion, I myself am still a "newb" after 3 years of more or less constant play.

After all, this was my first (& presently only MMO, though I did sub to "that other shiny new game"), but the content is so deep that I could never feel superior to even a first-day player. For instance, I've been in only one PvP battle, got creamed plus taunted, & went off to work on my builds some more. I can't do all the cool binds, base-building, or graphic capture collages that many of you seem to be so good at pulling off. But it's no fun, really, to totally pwn a game. As in real life, we are all ignorant of something, and thus can enjoy a new challenge.

So I consider myself a "newb" but not a "nOOb", and can't imagine flaming someone, even for asking "Where is Miss Liberty?" while we're both standing on the City Hall steps in Atlas. I just don't see myself being contemptuous of anyone here, actually--if another player says something really nasty or truly stupid to me, I will simply ignore them. In the CoH environment, you can actually live by the old saw "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

As for the "other shiny new game", I'm still struggling with the rather unforgiving combat engine in the tutorial. The Distinguished Competition's offering seems more of a "first-person fighter" for fast young hands & eyes rather than a game like CoH, which even an old man like myself can play without snuffing it every 60 feet. In hearing about the snarky Community there, I am even more tempted to think "I'll get back to this later", & play CoH instead.

Yet possibly, even in the "other game", the intial "IQs smaller than their shoe sizes" people will get bored quickly and find other ways of dropping verbal napalm on hapless Netizens. I agree that we in the CoH Communty are the role models for MMO players everywhere, or should strive to be.

My thanks go out to everyone (and you are legion) who has helped and supported me in my 33 months of newbness!

Well, to be fair, you can still play some MMOs if you keep out of people's way and they keep out of yours, even if you hate each other

That's actually one of the best parts of City of Heroes as a game, and I feel part of what fosters a friendly environment - the game does not encourage people to compete and screw each other over. When you meet another player in-game, you can at best see help, or at worst see nothing at all. You have no reason to feel animosity towards people in the game, and so people bring this attitude to the forums.

Why wouldn't they? The more participation there is in the market, the better it is for the people using it. People who like to use the market want as many other people as possible to use it too. It's in our best interest.

A lot of people on the market forum agree that inflation is out of hand. People go so far as to do Stupid Marketeer Tricks in a token attempt to purge some of the excess inf.

All the blame falls on the devs, for increasing the earning power of 50s (and it has nothing to do with whether you use the market or not, since playing the market generates no inf, just moves it around, and in fact destroys some inf through market fees.) but not giving people anything to spend their inf on.

The inflation threads usually have little to do with the "stuff costs too much" threads though.
